Mombasa to Masai Mara: The Honest 2026 Guide
There is no direct road from Mombasa to the Masai Mara. Driving means going through Nairobi first, which is 750+ km and at least 10 hours. Flying is the only practical option, and direct flights from the coast to the Mara exist. This guide covers every route, what each one costs in time and money, and the mistakes that turn a simple transfer into a wasted day.

Mombasa Air Safari operates direct flights from Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa to airstrips inside the Mara. The flight takes about 3 hours with stops at various strips (Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Serena). One-way fares run around $430. SafariLink and AirKenya also fly the route, sometimes via Nairobi Wilson.
Guests staying at Diani Beach on the south coast should fly from Ukunda Airstrip (UKA), not from Mombasa airport. Ukunda is 15 to 20 minutes from most Diani hotels. Flying from Ukunda avoids the old Likoni Ferry crossing and the Mombasa city traffic entirely. If the itinerary requires departure from Moi International instead, use the Dongo Kundu Bypass highway, which bridges the south coast directly to the airport mainland without touching the ferry. That cuts the transfer to about 45 minutes.
The flight path from the coast crosses the Tsavo plains and skirts the Chyulu Hills. On the outbound journey (coast to Mara), the left side of the aircraft gives a clear view of Kilimanjaro before the midday cloud builds. On the return, the right side has the view. Seating is first-come on these small planes, so boarding early matters.
For groups of 4 to 6, a private charter from Mombasa or Ukunda to the Mara can cost roughly the same per person as scheduled flights and flies direct without intermediate stops, cutting travel time to under 2 hours.
Connecting Through Nairobi
This is the route that wastes a day. Flying Mombasa → JKIA, then transferring across Nairobi to Wilson Airport, then flying Wilson → Mara involves two airports on opposite sides of the city. The JKIA-to-Wilson transfer takes 1 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
If connecting through Nairobi is unavoidable, fly into Wilson Airport directly rather than JKIA. SafariLink and other carriers fly Mombasa to Wilson. From Wilson, the Mara flight departs from the same terminal. No city transfer needed.
The SGR Train
The Madaraka Express from Mombasa to Nairobi takes about 5 hours and is a comfortable ride. But it arrives at Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau, on the eastern edge of the city. From there, the Mara is still a 5 to 7 hour drive or a transfer across Nairobi to Wilson Airport for a flight. The train doesn’t connect to the Mara in any practical sense.
Guests who try to take the afternoon train from Mombasa and drive straight to the Mara the same day face 11+ hours of continuous travel and arrive at the gate after dark, exhausted, and liable for a double park fee. If using the train to save money, take it the day before, stay overnight near Syokimau or along Mombasa Road, and leave for the Mara at 5:30 AM the next morning. This catches every coast guest. Mombasa pushes above 30°C at sea level with thick humidity, and the Mara sits at 1,500 metres where dawn temperatures drop below 10°C. That’s a 20-degree swing in under 3 hours of flying.
Don’t pack the fleece inside checked luggage. Wear layers and closed shoes onto the aircraft at Mombasa, even if it feels unnecessary on the coast tarmac. The moment the aircraft door opens on the Mara airstrip, the cold highland air hits immediately. The packing list covers what to bring.
Luggage
Bush flights enforce a strict 15 kg limit in a soft-sided duffel. Hard suitcases are denied at the tarmac. I’ve watched airport staff at Ukunda pull clothes out of a Samsonite on the runway and stuff them into a borrowed canvas bag while the guest stood there in the sun. It’s not a graceful process. Beach guests typically have resort luggage that doesn’t work for safari — hard cases, swimwear, snorkelling gear, evening shoes.
Most coast guests handle this by leaving the beach luggage at the hotel (free storage is standard) and taking a separate soft duffel packed with neutral safari clothes, a fleece, binoculars, camera gear, and antimalarials. How long does it take to get from Mombasa to the Mara?
Flying direct: 2 to 3 hours. Connecting through Nairobi: most of a day. Driving through Nairobi: 10 to 12 hours minimum, usually split over two days.
Can I drive from the coast to the Mara?
Not directly. The route goes through Nairobi. Details in the opening above.
What’s the minimum trip length from the coast?
Three days, two nights. Shorter than that and the travel eats the experience. Three days gives at least four game drives and time to absorb the Mara.
Should I do beach first or safari first?
Either works, but ending on the beach is more common. Fly Nairobi → Mara for the safari, then Mara → coast for the beach.
