Masai Mara and Diani Beach Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide
A Masai Mara and Diani Beach Safari pairs predator action in the Mara with the white sand of Kenya’s south coast. For the 2026/2027 season, expect all-inclusive rates for two people sharing to range from KES 615,000 ($4,730) to KES 1,950,000 ($15,000) per person. This covers eCitizen park fees, the direct flight from the Mara to Ukunda, and beach accommodation. The minimum is 7 days: 3 nights Mara + 4 nights Diani. Success depends on flying direct to Ukunda instead of backtracking through Nairobi, and timing your Mara entry after 1:00 PM to align the 24-hour park fee clock with your departure flight.

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A Masai Mara and Diani Beach Safari is the sharpest contrast Kenya offers. You’re watching a lion at 6 AM in the Mara dust. By 5 PM the same day, you’re barefoot in the Indian Ocean. The Mara and Diani have nothing in common. That’s why they work together.
The Park Fee Clock
This is the biggest headache for guests in 2026. Your Masai Mara park fee runs on a strict 24-hour clock.
If you enter the Mara at 8:00 AM on Day 1, your permit expires at 8:00 AM on Day 4. The flight to Diani usually leaves around 1:30 PM. That means you’re inside the park for 5.5 hours after your permit expires, and you’ll be charged an extra day ($100–$200) at the airstrip.
I schedule your Day 1 entry for after 1:00 PM. This shifts your 24-hour cycles so you can enjoy a final morning game drive on your last day and reach the airstrip before the permit runs out. It saves you a full day’s fee.

Most websites tell you to fly back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and then to Mombasa. Don’t.
You can fly from the Mara airstrips directly to Ukunda Airstrip in Diani. About 2 hours. You skip Nairobi traffic, skip the Likoni Ferry crossing (which can add an hour during rush hour), and land 10 minutes from your beach hotel.
The luggage split. Bush planes have a strict 15 kg soft-bag limit. Your snorkelling gear, beach clothes, and books won’t fit. Pack two bags: a soft duffel for the Mara and a hard case for the beach. Leave the beach bag at Wilson Airport lockers, our Nairobi office, or your Nairobi hotel. We arrange for it to meet you at Diani. Your camera gear alone can weigh 5–7 kg, so pack light for the safari portion.
The Mara Leg
If your Mara portion is only 2–3 nights, every game drive counts.
Conservancy over reserve. On a short Mara leg, stay in a private conservancy like Naboisho, Ol Kinyei, or Olare Motorogi. Conservancies limit vehicles per sighting to 5, allow night drives and walking safaris, and feel more exclusive. In the main reserve, you can end up behind 15 vehicles at a lion sighting. On a 2-night stay, you can’t afford to waste a drive that way.
Siana Gate. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks for eCitizen validation. If we’re staying in the east Mara, I use the Siana Gate. Faster entry, and you get a game drive on the way in.
What to Do at Diani

Diani has 25 km of white sand, but the best guests don’t spend every day on the beach.
Wasini Island. A full-day excursion: traditional dhow cruise, wild dolphin swimming, and snorkelling at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. If you’re spending 4+ nights at the beach, one day should be Wasini. See the Excluded section above for the cost.
Kaya Kinondo. A Mijikenda sacred forest 15 minutes from the beach hotels. You wear traditional cloth to enter. It’s silent, ancient, and completely different from anything on the safari leg.
Colobus Conservation. A rescue centre for the endangered Angolan Colobus monkey. Look for the rope bridges spanning the main road. Watching a mother monkey navigate a bridge 10 metres above the traffic is a photo you won’t get anywhere else.
Tiwi Rock Pool. Just north of Diani, there’s a rock pool shaped like the map of Africa. It only appears at low tide. Check the tide table and go one hour before low tide. Don’t go with random beach guides at high tide. The rocks are sharp and the waves are real.
The Kongo River. Hire a local dhow to take you up the Kongo River estuary 20 minutes after sunset. The mangroves reflecting the purple sky make it the best birding spot on the coast.
11 Things to Know Before You Go
- Book Through a Local Diani Agency. Don’t book your safari through your beach hotel. Walk into an agency on Diani Beach Road. Reviewers consistently save KES 30,000–50,000 per person compared to hotel-brokered safaris.
- Camera Humidity Warning. You land in Diani (85% humidity) from the Mara (15% humidity). Your lens will fog internally. Don’t open your camera bag for 3 hours. Let it acclimatise in your room with the AC off.
- Low Season Private Safari. In May or June, you can often get a private Land Cruiser for the price of a group safari because operators need the business. Two people, one vehicle, at budget prices.
- SGR Afternoon Train. If you’re on a budget, take the Madaraka Express at 3:30 PM from Mombasa. You reach Nairobi by 8:30 PM. Saves a hotel night. Book up to 14 days in advance online.
- Coconut Rule. Never pay $5 for a coconut at a resort. Buy from the bicycle vendors on the beach road. KES 100.
- The Sands Blue Flag. Resorts like The Sands at Nomad use a flag or umbrella system. Sit under the marked umbrella and beach vendors know you want to be left alone.
- 3+4 or 2+5 Split. If wildlife matters more, do 3 nights Mara + 4 nights Diani. If the beach is the main event, do 2 nights Mara + 5 nights Diani. Both work on 7 days.
- Salty Squid Over Ali Barbour’s. Ali Barbour’s Cave is the famous Diani restaurant. It’s good but overpriced. The Salty Squid has better seafood at half the cost. Order the platter for two.
- Masai Mara booking KATO Check. Verify your operator on the KATO directory before paying any deposit. This applies to both your safari operator and any Diani agency.
- Mombasa vs Ukunda Airport. See the Flying Direct section above. Short version: if your hotel is in Diani, always fly to Ukunda, not Mombasa.

The Walk to Tiwi at High Tide
A couple from my last Mara-Diani trip asked about the Tiwi rock pool on their second morning at the beach. I told them to check the tide table at reception and go in the afternoon when the tide would be out.
They didn’t check. A guy on the beach offered to take them for KES 500. They went at 11 AM. The pool was underwater. The rocks were covered in spray and the coral was slippery. The wife cut her foot badly enough that it needed cleaning and a bandage at the hotel. They spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool instead of the rock pool.
I heard about it at dinner. The husband said the beach guide disappeared the moment things went wrong. That part didn’t surprise me.

Is this trip safe?
Yes. The Mara has rangers and your guide carries a radio. Diani is one of Kenya’s safest tourist areas with hotel security and a strong police presence on the beach road. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.
What the Contrast Feels Like
The thing nobody prepares you for is the arrival at the beach. You’ve spent 3 days waking before dawn, sitting in a Land Cruiser, scanning the grass for movement. Your clothes smell like dust. Your neck is stiff from looking through binoculars.
Then you land at Ukunda and someone drives you to a hotel on the sand. You walk to the water and it’s warm and there’s nothing to look for. No animals, no tracks, no alarm for tomorrow. Just waves. It takes about an hour before your body believes the safari is actually over. A few guests have told me they felt almost restless that first evening, like they should be doing something. By the second morning, they’re asleep past 8 AM and they don’t move from the lounger until lunch.
