The 2026 Pricing Reality
I’ll be straight with you—the 2026 fee hikes have hit hard. Mara entry now runs KES 13,000-26,000 per day for non-residents depending on season. Amboseli is KES 11,700. If you see a week-long package advertised under KES 200,000, read the fine print. You’re probably staying two hours outside the gate, eating ugali and sukuma wiki three meals a day, or there’s a catch buried somewhere.
For a proper experience—decent lodge inside or near the park, vehicle that won’t break down, guide who actually knows where the lions are—budget KES 250,000 minimum for week-long road safaris. Flying packages between parks start around KES 230,000 because those Safarilink tickets aren’t cheap.

Road safaris spend nearly as much time bouncing over potholes as watching animals. Flying flips that ratio. Whether the extra shillings justify those hours depends on how you feel about six hours in a Land Cruiser with your kidneys taking a beating.
What It Actually Feels Like
Nobody warns you about the “safari shower”—that fine red-brown dust that works into your teeth, your hair, the creases of your camera. By day three of a road safari, you’ll blow your nose and the tissue comes out the colour of terracotta.
Then there’s the sound at 3am in Mara North Conservancy. You’re lying in your tent, finally asleep, and suddenly: that manic whooping laugh. Hyenas. Close. First time, your heart nearly stops. By night three, you just roll over and wait for them to move on.
The reward comes at sunset. Back at camp, dust washed off, holding a cold Tusker or a cup of chai dawa. The light goes golden, then pink, then purple. Someone’s got a fire going. The day’s sightings get traded back and forth. That part never gets old.

Don’t Trust Google Maps
Google’s algorithm doesn’t understand Kenyan roads. It routes you on paths that look shorter but destroy vehicles.
The C103 Trap (Amboseli): Google suggests the C103 via Namanga. Avoid it—potholes that swallow tyres. Take the A109 to Emali, then the C102. Fully tarmacked.
The C11 vs C12 (Mara): Heading to Sekenani Gate? Stay on the C12. Locals call the C11 through Maji Moto “suspension cemetery.”
Park Speed Limits
Inside parks, you’re capped at 35 km/h. KWS rangers use speed traps around Amboseli’s elephant corridors. Getting caught means fines up to KES 100,000—or being banned from the park for the day.
Hidden Spots Most Tourists Miss
Observation Hill Information Centre (Amboseli): Everyone climbs the hill for views. Nobody visits the research centre at its base—elephant tracking data, family identification sheets. One of the only places you can legally walk outside your vehicle.
Kimana Sanctuary: Night drives are banned inside Amboseli National Park. Kimana, just outside the eastern boundary, runs them legally. Aardvarks, honey badgers, porcupines. KES 7,800 per person.
The Mara Triangle: Most tourists pile through Sekenani on the eastern side. The western Mara Triangle has stricter vehicle limits and “one vehicle per sighting” etiquette. Fewer minibuses crowding your leopard.
Avoiding the Briefcase Operators
You know the type. Slick guy in a Nairobi cafe, promises an “exclusive safari experience” at half the going rate. Then a broken-down van shows up, the “luxury lodge” is a concrete block two hours from the gate, and suddenly the price doesn’t include park fees.
Before booking with anyone, ask: What vehicle model exactly? Same guide throughout? What happens if the vehicle breaks down inside the park?
We’re based here. We’re not going anywhere. The vehicle in the photos is the vehicle that picks you up.
The Pole Pole Factor
Things move slowly in Kenya. The gate payment system will crash. Your 6am departure will become 6:45. The lodge will lose your booking and need 20 minutes to figure it out.
Keep your Safaricom M-Pesa ready as backup. Keep cash (KES 13,000-26,000) for when digital fails completely. And honestly? Just accept it. Getting frustrated won’t make the system reboot faster. Have another chai, watch the sunrise, pole pole.

Which is better for a first-timer, Masai Mara or Amboseli?
They deliver different experiences. The Mara has higher wildlife density and Big 5 variety—you’re almost guaranteed lions, and migration season adds spectacle. Amboseli has fewer cats but the elephant encounters are unmatched. Got 5+ days? Do both. Choosing one? First-timers usually want the Mara.
Can I visit both parks in 3 days?
Only if you fly. The 3-day flying safari covers both with one night each—four game drives total. Enough for solid sightings, not enough to really settle in.
Is flying between parks worth the money?
For trips under 6 days, usually yes. Direct driving takes 8-9 hours. Flying takes one hour. The premium (roughly KES 75,000-95,000) buys 8+ hours looking at wildlife instead of tarmac.
