What we tell every guest: The 6:00 AM game drive in July is surprisingly freezing. Bring a beanie (winter hat) – the wind chill in an open Land Cruiser is no joke until the sun hits around 9:00 AM. If you’re planning to photograph the river crossings, pack a dust cover for your camera – August dust is brutal.

How Booking Works
Step 1: Submit Inquiry
Fill out the form at masaimara.co.ke/get-a-quote. Include your travel dates, group size, budget range, and any special requests. Takes two minutes.
Step 2: Receive Quote
We respond within 24 hours with a detailed itinerary and pricing. Usually faster – often within a few hours during business days.
Step 3: Confirm with Deposit
Pay 30% deposit to secure your dates and accommodation. We hold the rooms. Without deposit, availability isn’t guaranteed – especially during peak season when camps book out months ahead.
Step 4: Pay Balance
Settle the remaining 70% at least 30 days before your travel date. For bookings made within 30 days of travel, full payment is required immediately.
Step 5: Receive Documents
You’ll get a detailed itinerary, pickup instructions, packing list, and emergency contacts. We handle all park fee payments and lodge confirmations.
Booking Mistakes That Cost People Money
I’ve seen these go wrong dozens of times. Here are real situations.
Waiting Too Long for Peak Season
A family from Italy contacted me in June 2025. They had their hearts set on Angama Mara for the Great Migration. I had to tell them it had been sold out since the previous October. We ended up at a lovely conservancy camp – Naboisho worked out beautifully, actually – but the lesson was clear: August in the Mara doesn’t wait for anyone.
The fix: For July-October travel, book by January at the latest. For luxury camps like Governors’, Angama, or Sala’s, book the previous year. I’m not exaggerating.
Not Confirming Camp Quality
“Budget” means different things to different operators. I’ve had guests arrive at camps with broken plumbing, generator power that cuts at 10 PM, and food that made them genuinely sick. One couple from Canada booked a “3-day Mara safari” for USD 400 per person through an online aggregator. The camp was 45 minutes outside the reserve, the vehicle broke down twice, and they spent more time at a mechanic in Narok than watching wildlife.
The fix: Ask specifically which camp you’ll stay at. Research it. Look at recent photos. If you’re traveling with kids, check our family guide – some camps have “warrior clubs” to keep them busy while parents do early drives. Cheap isn’t worth it if you’re miserable.
Ignoring Cancellation Terms
Life happens. Flights get cancelled. Family emergencies arise. A guest last year had to cancel 10 days before travel due to a medical emergency. Her original operator had a strict no-refund policy. She lost USD 3,200.
Our policy: Full refund minus bank fees if cancelled 60+ days out. 50% refund 30-59 days out. No refund within 30 days. We recommend travel insurance – it costs about USD 50-100 and can save you thousands.
Booking Through Too Many Middlemen
Some travelers book through an overseas agency that books through a Nairobi agency that books through a local operator. Each layer adds 15-25% markup. And when something goes wrong – vehicle breakdown, camp overbooking – nobody takes responsibility. Everyone points at someone else.
The fix: Book as close to the operator as possible. Ask: “Who actually runs the safari?” That’s who you want to deal with directly.
When to Book
Peak Season (July-October)
Book 4-6 months ahead for mid-range camps. Book 6-12 months ahead for luxury camps. The river crossings draw crowds, and availability disappears fast.
Shoulder Season (June, November-December)
Book 2-3 months ahead. More flexibility, but popular camps still fill.
Low Season (January-May)
Book 1-2 months ahead. Plenty of availability. You’ll often get room upgrades and better rates. The wildlife is still excellent – just no migration herds.

Kenyan Resident Requirements
The resident rates shown above require proof of citizenship or residency at the gate.
Accepted ID: National ID card or valid Kenyan passport. Work permits for foreign residents.
What doesn’t work: Kenyan passport with foreign address, expired permits, or spouse’s documents.
The risk: Claiming resident rates without valid proof means paying the difference at the gate – plus potential fines. Rangers check. Don’t gamble on it.
The main difference is park fees: KES 1,500-3,000/day for citizens versus USD 100-200/day for non-residents. Accommodation rates are usually the same.
