Masai Mara and Zanzibar Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide
A Masai Mara and Zanzibar Safari is a two-country trip. You fly from the Mara to Nairobi, then Nairobi to Zanzibar. It pairs Kenya’s predator tracking with the spice islands of Tanzania: Stone Town’s UNESCO alleys, Forodhani Night Market, red colobus monkeys, and some of the best beaches and diving in East Africa. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 615,500 ($4,735) to KES 2,450,000 ($18,850) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, all flights, the mandatory $44 Zanzibar insurance, and island accommodation. You need a Kenya eTA, a Tanzania eVisa, a yellow fever certificate, and at least 5 blank passport pages.
Masai Mara and Zanzibar Safari Costs (2026/2027)
This trip crosses an international border. The pricing includes Kenya park fees, Tanzania visa support, the mandatory Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) policy, and all internal flights. These are all-inclusive prices for two people traveling together.

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A Masai Mara and Zanzibar Safari is the trip where Kenya meets Tanzania. It’s not the same as a Mara and Diani combination. Diani is a Kenyan beach resort. Zanzibar is a Tanzanian island with its own history, culture, food, and visa requirements. Stone Town alone has more cultural depth than the entire Kenyan coast. The Two-Country Paperwork
This is where most guests get caught. You’re crossing from Kenya to Tanzania, and each country has its own requirements.
Kenya eTA. $30–$50 depending on nationality. Apply online at least 2 weeks before travel. Your passport needs at least 3 blank pages for Kenya.
Tanzania eVisa. $50 for most nationalities, $100 for US citizens. Apply online at the official Tanzania eVisa portal. Your passport needs at least 2 more blank pages for Tanzania. That’s 5 blank pages minimum across both countries.
Yellow fever certificate. Kenya is classified as a yellow fever risk country. When you fly from Nairobi to Zanzibar, health officers at ZNZ airport will ask for your yellow fever card. It must be the physical yellow plastic card, not a digital copy. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. The certificate is valid for life. Guests without it have been pulled aside and offered a $50 on-the-spot vaccination at the airport. Carry the card in your hand when you join the immigration queue.
Zanzibar mandatory insurance. Since October 2024, all visitors must buy a $44 policy from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. Your personal travel insurance is not accepted as a substitute. Buy it online at the official Visit Zanzibar portal before you fly. Print the QR code. The airport Wi-Fi is unreliable.
The 8-Day Itinerary
Three Mara nights, four Zanzibar nights, one transit day.
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara
Morning flight from Wilson Airport. Arrive for lunch and an afternoon game drive. I schedule entry to align with the park fee clock.
Day 2: Full Day in the Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. If you’re in a conservancy, this evening is good for a night drive.
Day 3: Balloon Morning or Walking Safari
Hot air balloon at sunrise or a walking safari with a Maasai warrior. Afternoon at camp.
Day 4: Mara to Zanzibar
Morning game drive. Fly to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, transfer to JKIA, and catch the afternoon flight to Zanzibar. The Nairobi-to-Zanzibar flight takes about 2 hours. You arrive in the evening. Have your yellow fever card and ZIC insurance QR code ready for immigration.
Day 5: Stone Town
Full day in Stone Town. Walking tour through the narrow alleys, the carved doors — floral carvings mean Arab influence, brass studs mean Indian — the Sultan’s Palace, and the slave trade history. Afternoon at the Forodhani Night Market as the sun drops. Grilled lobster, Zanzibar pizza, which is a stuffed crepe rather than Italian pizza, mishkaki, urojo soup, and fresh sugarcane juice. This is the evening you don’t eat at the hotel.
Day 6: Jozani Forest and the East Coast
Morning at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park for the endemic red colobus monkeys. They exist nowhere else on Earth. The park also has a mangrove boardwalk. Afternoon transfer to your beach hotel on the north or east coast. Stop at Paje on the way to see the seaweed farms and swim at Maalum Cave.
Day 7: Beach Day or Mnemba Atoll
Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, a 30-minute boat ride from the northeast coast and consistently ranked among the best dive sites in Africa. Or a full rest day at the beach. If you chose Nungwi, this is also the sunset you came for.
Day 8: Departure
Morning at the beach or a spice tour. The tour takes 3–4 hours through plantations where you smell, taste, and learn about cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon. Flight to Nairobi or Dar es Salaam for your connection.
What to Do in Zanzibar
These are the things that make this trip different from a Mara and Diani combination.
Stone Town. A UNESCO World Heritage site and the cultural heart of Zanzibar. You need at least a full day. The alleys are dense with history: the old slave market, the House of Wonders, carved doors on every street, and spice merchants. It’s not a few streets like Mombasa’s Old Town. It’s an entire city.
Forodhani Night Market. Every sunset, the waterfront park transforms into an open-air food market. Point at what looks good and eat standing up. The Zanzibar pizza, urojo soup, and grilled seafood are the highlights. Pick the stalls with the longest queues of locals.
Jozani Forest. The only place on Earth to see the Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Habituated and close. The mangrove boardwalk is included. Budget 2–3 hours.
Prison Island. A 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town. Colonial-era ruins and a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some over 100 years old. You can feed and touch them. Go at 9 AM before the cruise ship crowds arrive. Good for a morning combined with a Stone Town afternoon.
Mnemba Atoll. Crystal-clear water, colourful coral, turtles, and tropical fish. The atoll is a private island but the reef around it is public. Boat trips from Nungwi or Matemwe take about 30 minutes. The best snorkelling in East Africa.
Spice tour. Zanzibar is the Spice Island. A guided tour through plantations where you smell, taste, and learn about cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon. Book through your hotel, not a random tout. A good tour takes 3–4 hours and costs $25–$40.

Your experience at the beach depends almost entirely on which coast you choose.
Nungwi and Kendwa on the north tip. The least tidal variation on the island. You can swim at any tide. The sunsets are the best in Zanzibar. More restaurants, bars, and activity. This is where most guests stay after safari because it feels the most like a traditional beach holiday.
Paje and Jambiani on the east coast. The sea retreats hundreds of metres at low tide. You’re walking on exposed seabed, not swimming. Paje is one of the best kitesurfing spots in Africa, and watching the seaweed farmers work at low tide is worth the trip on its own. The vibe is quieter and more local. But if swimming is your priority, you’ll be frustrated for half of each day.
If you want swimming and sunsets, stay north. If you want kitesurfing and a quieter atmosphere, stay east.
10 Things I Tell My Guests Before We Leave
- USD Cash Rules in Zanzibar. Hotels and tours quote in USD. ATMs give Tanzanian shillings. If paying cash, the notes must be crisp, undamaged, and printed after 2013. Older or damaged bills are routinely refused. Bring small denominations for tips and markets.
- Dress Modestly Away From the Beach. Zanzibar is more conservative than Kenya’s coast. Beachwear is fine at your hotel. Cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and any village.
- The Transit Day Is Unavoidable. There’s no direct flight from the Mara to Zanzibar. Day 4 is a travel day: Mara to Wilson, transfer to JKIA, fly to Zanzibar. Book a late-afternoon Zanzibar flight if your Mara flight arrives by noon.
- Camera Humidity. You land in Zanzibar at 85–90% humidity from the dry Mara. Don’t open your camera bag for 3 hours.
- Siana Gate. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks for eCitizen validation. I use the Siana Gate for faster entry.
- Language Shift. In the Mara, the Maasai are direct. In Zanzibar, the culture is polite and indirect. Learn two words: “Samahani,” which means excuse me, and “Shikamoo,” a respectful greeting for elders. Being loud or impatient will get you slower service, not faster.
- Carved Chest Exports. If you buy a carved wooden chest in Stone Town, ask the seller for a certificate confirming it’s a new build. Customs can seize items that look antique without government documentation.
- Nungwi vs Paje. See the beach section above. Pick your coast before you book.
- Print Everything. Your Kenya eTA, Tanzania eVisa, yellow fever card, ZIC insurance QR code, and hotel confirmations. Zanzibar airport Wi-Fi fails regularly. Paper copies save you.
- Masai Mara booking KATO Check. Verify your Kenya operator on the KATO directory before paying any deposit. For the Zanzibar side, check TATO (Tanzania Association of Tour Operators).
About the 15 kg Limit
Bush planes to the Mara have a strict 15 kg soft-bag limit. Pack a soft duffel for the Mara with your layers, binoculars, and camera. Pack a separate bag for Zanzibar. Leave the Zanzibar bag at Wilson Airport lockers, your Nairobi hotel, or our office. Swap bags during your Day 4 transit through Wilson.

Yes. Mara tracks flood regularly. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.
Is this trip safe?

Why Zanzibar Instead of Diani
A Mara and Diani trip stays in one country. The logistics are simpler, the costs are lower, and you don’t need a second visa. If all you want is bush and beach, Diani is the easier choice.
But Zanzibar is a different level of cultural experience. Stone Town has been a trading hub for a thousand years. The food is different from Kenya’s coast. The carved doors, the spice markets, the call to prayer echoing through narrow alleys, the Forodhani smoke at sunset. After 3 days watching animals in the Mara, spending 4 days on an island where the history goes back centuries feels like a second trip, not an add-on.
