Ashnil Mara Camp: Complete 2026 Guide to Hippo Views & Rates

The outdoor swimming pool and lounge chairs at Ashnil Mara Camp surrounded by trees.
Guests can relax by the pristine swimming pool at Ashnil Mara Camp after safaris.

Ashnil Mara Camp is a 4-star luxury tented camp sitting right on the banks of the Mara River inside Masai Mara National Reserve. You’ll hear hippos grunting all night long—that deep, resonant wheeze-honk that sounds almost mechanical until you realize it’s a two-ton animal just meters below your tent deck. With 56 tents, two swimming pools, and direct reserve access, Ashnil offers a solid mid-range option that punches above its price point. Below, I break down exact 2026 rates, insider room tips, and complete safari packages.

I’m David Njunge, TRA-licensed safari guide. After ten years guiding in the Mara, I’ve stayed at Ashnil dozens of times with clients. Here’s what sets it apart: the location. You’re already inside the reserve. No extra driving to reach game-viewing areas. You step out of camp and you’re on safari.

The camp sits where the Mara and Olkeju Rivers meet. From the main restaurant deck, you watch hippos wallowing in pools about 30 meters below. Crocodiles bask on the opposite bank. One morning last February, a leopard crossed right behind the pool area while guests were eating breakfast. Nobody moved. Forks frozen mid-air.

That’s Ashnil. Not the most luxurious camp in the Mara, but genuinely thrilling.

The Tents

Ashnil has 56 luxury canvas tents spread along the riverbank. Each has wooden deck, en-suite bathroom with hot shower, ceiling fan, mosquito nets, in-room safe, and walk-in closet. The tents feel spacious—not cramped like some budget camps.

Which Tent Numbers to Request

Here’s advice you won’t find on the official website:

Best river views: Request tents 23-28 or 2-6. These sit closest to the main hippo pool with unobstructed sightlines. You can lie in bed and watch hippos through the mosquito netting.

Quietest location: Tents in the 30s and 40s are farthest from the main area. Less foot traffic, more privacy. But longer walk to meals—some guests find this inconvenient.

Closest to pool/restaurant: Tents 7-15 are convenient but noisier. You’ll hear other guests walking past. Fine if you prioritize convenience over privacy.

Family tents: Suite 6A is the best family option. Costs an extra USD 80 (KES 10,344) per night but fits 4 comfortably.

Avoid if possible: I’ve had clients report that some higher-numbered tents (45+) can feel far from everything. Not a deal-breaker, but worth mentioning when booking.

Food and Staff to Know

The restaurant serves buffet-style meals with both international and Kenyan options. On certain nights, you’ll get à la carte instead. The pasta station is consistently good—mention this to your waiter, and they’ll prioritize it.

Staff Who Stand Out

At Ashnil, you’re assigned a personal waiter for your entire stay. This makes a huge difference.

Chef Michael runs the kitchen and genuinely cares about guest feedback. He’ll come out to your table on most evenings to ask what you’d like the next day. If you have dietary restrictions, tell him directly—the buffet labels aren’t always clear.

Amos is one of the longest-serving waiters. Friendly, remembers names quickly. If he’s assigned to you, you’re in good hands.

Boniface handles the dining area during high season and knows the menu inside out. Great for recommendations.

Nerea at reception handles special requests efficiently. If you need a specific tent number, she’s the one to ask.

Kennedy is another favorite waiter—consistently mentioned in positive reviews.

The bar staff (Moses, Florence, Joseph) keep the firepit lounge lively in the evenings. Tusker beer and Dawa cocktails are popular choices.

Facilities You Should Know About

Luxury suite tent interior with large glass doors at Ashnil Mara Camp.
The spacious living area inside a luxury suite at Ashnil Mara Camp.

Two swimming pools: The main pool overlooks the river. There’s also a children’s pool. Post-game-drive swims here are genuinely restorative—the Mara gets dusty.

Spa tent: Basic but adequate. Hot stone massage runs about USD 40 (KES 5,175). Facials around USD 30 (KES 3,880). Book in advance during peak season.

Gift shop: Elizabeth runs it. Decent selection of Maasai crafts. Prices are fair but not the cheapest—you’ll get better deals at Maasai markets if you negotiate.

Firepit lounge: This is where evenings happen at Ashnil. The camp lights a fire around 6:30 PM. Drinks, stories, planning the next day’s drive. On clear nights, the sky is ridiculous—you’ll see the Milky Way clearly.

WiFi: Available in common areas only. Speed is inconsistent. Don’t expect to stream video. Plan accordingly if you’re a remote worker.

Getting There

Ashnil’s location is convenient compared to camps deeper in the reserve.

By road from Nairobi: Approximately 5-6 hours via Narok. The last 2 hours from Narok gate can be rough—dust in dry season, mud in wet. A Land Cruiser handles it fine.

By air: Fly to Olkiombo Airstrip (30 minutes from camp) or Keekorok Airstrip (45 minutes). Flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport take roughly 45 minutes. Nairobi to Masai Mara flights depart multiple times daily.

Honest Concerns Addressed

“Won’t 56 tents feel crowded?”

During peak migration (July-September), yes—the camp fills up completely. Buffets get busy, game drive vehicles cluster at sightings. This is true of every major camp in the reserve. The trade-off is you’re there during the wildebeest migration, which justifies it.

Outside peak season, Ashnil rarely feels crowded. Shoulder season (January-March, November) offers excellent game viewing with far fewer guests.

“Is the electric fence safe?”

Ashnil is fenced for safety. You can walk freely between your tent and the main areas without escort. That said, animals occasionally breach fences—monkeys are regular visitors. Follow staff instructions, especially at night. The camp posts Maasai guards after dark.

“The walk from distant tents seems far”

It’s about a 4-5 minute walk from the farthest tents (40s-50s) to the restaurant. This bothers some guests, especially after evening drinks. If mobility is a concern, request a tent in the 7-15 range. The camp can arrange golf cart transport for elderly guests—ask Nerea at reception.

“What about the hot water?”

Hot water is consistent throughout the day. I’ve had clients shower at 6 AM before early drives with no issues. The camp uses solar heating supplemented by backup systems. During heavy cloud cover, water can be lukewarm by late evening.

Activities Beyond Game Drives

Bush breakfast: Arranged on request. Your guide drives you to a scenic spot—usually overlooking the plains or a kopje—and sets up a full English breakfast. One of the most photogenic experiences in the Mara. Cost varies; ask at reception.

Hippo pool breakfast: This happens at a specific location near a hippo-filled pool. Fresh eggs cooked to order while hippos grunt below. Ask for this specifically.

Hot air balloon safari: Launches happen around 6 AM. You’ll drift over the plains for about an hour before landing for champagne breakfast. KES 65,455 per person. Book at least 48 hours ahead.

Maasai village visit: About KES 2,586 per person. You’ll visit a local manyatta (homestead), meet elders, see traditional dances. Some guests find it commercialized; others love it. Your call.

Sundowner: The camp arranges evening drinks at scenic viewpoints. Watch the sun drop below the escarpment with a cold Tusker in hand.

Best Time to Visit

July–October: Peak migration. River crossings, massive herds, predator action. Book 6+ months ahead. Prices highest but experience unmatched.

January–March: Green season. Calving in the Serengeti spills over. Fewer vehicles, excellent birdlife. My personal favorite time.

April–May: Long rains. Some closures, muddy roads. Lowest prices if you want to gamble on weather.

November–December: Short rains ending, grass greening. Good wildlife, moderate crowds.
