Masai Mara Serengeti Ngorongoro Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide
A Masai Mara Serengeti Ngorongoro Safari combines Africa’s three most famous wildlife destinations into one cross-border trip. The Mara for concentrated predator action and conservancy flexibility. The Serengeti for scale and migration. Ngorongoro Crater for black rhinos and the densest wildlife viewing on the continent. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 715,000 ($5,500) to KES 2,450,000 ($18,850) per person. This covers private 4×4 Land Cruisers in both countries, Masai Mara park fee charges, Tanzanian TANAPA and Ngorongoro Conservation Area fees, and internal flights.
Masai Mara Serengeti Ngorongoro Safari Costs (2026/2027)
This trip crosses an international border and visits parks managed by three different authorities: Narok County (Mara), TANAPA (Serengeti), and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA). The pricing includes all fees, two separate 4×4 vehicles with guides, border logistics, and internal flights. These are all-inclusive prices for two people traveling together.

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A Masai Mara Serengeti Ngorongoro Safari is three different experiences stitched together by one migration. The Mara gives you the conservancy flexibility, night drives, and walking safaris that Tanzania doesn’t allow. The Serengeti gives you the open plains where you can drive for an hour without seeing another vehicle. And the crater gives you the most reliable Big Five viewing in East Africa in a single morning. Each destination justifies its place in the trip.
The 10-Day Itinerary
Three nights in the Mara, one transit day, three nights in the Serengeti, one night on the Ngorongoro rim, and departure through Tarangire.
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara
6:30 AM departure. Arrive for lunch. Your Mara park ticket runs on a strict 12-hour calendar day (6 AM – 6 PM), so if you arrive mid-afternoon, consider doing a Masai village visit or a conservancy drive outside the reserve instead of paying the full day rate for a few hours.
Day 2–4: Full Days in the Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives tracking lions, leopards, and the migration if it’s in the Mara (July–October). Do your night drive and walking safari during the Mara leg. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro don’t allow either.
Day 5: Mara to Tanzania
Morning game drive. Then the Isebania border crossing. See the Masai Mara and Serengeti Safari main page for full border details. Your Kenyan guide drops you off, you cross on foot, and your Tanzanian guide meets you on the other side. While your paperwork is processed (60–90 minutes), walk to the Kuria tribe stalls just past the Tanzanian gate for Kitenge textiles at local prices.
Day 6–8: Serengeti
Three full days. See the Serengeti section below for which zone to visit based on your travel dates.
Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater
Drive from the Serengeti to the crater rim. Stop at Olduvai Gorge for 30 minutes at the Leakey museum. Descend 600 metres to the crater floor for a half-day game drive. See the Ngorongoro section below for what to expect on the floor. Overnight on the crater rim.
Day 10: Departure
Morning game drive at Tarangire National Park for elephant herds and baobab trees, or at Lake Manyara for tree-climbing lions. Fly out of Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), not Dar es Salaam.
What to Know About Ngorongoro Crater
Area / Factor | Crater Regulation | Guide’s Field Warning |
Time Cap | 6-hour strict limit per vehicle | Go early; you cannot return for a second floor session. |
Lerai Forest | Slow canopy scans required | This dense grove of yellow fever trees is the zone for leopards. |
Lake Magadi | Soda lake perimeter boundaries | Never drive onto dry salt crusts; multi-ton 4x4s will sink. |
Picnic Spots | Protected hippo spring zones | Keep food completely covered; black kites dive-bomb plates. |
The crater is the part of this trip that most guests underestimate. After days of open plains in the Mara and the Serengeti, descending into a walled volcanic bowl with its own lake, forest, and resident wildlife feels like entering a different world.
The 6-hour limit. Vehicles are strictly limited to 6 hours on the crater floor. Your guide descends in the morning, you drive the floor, eat lunch at one of the picnic sites, and ascend by mid-afternoon. You cannot return for a second session. Getting to the gate early matters more here than in any other park on this trip.
The descent and ascent roads are different. You go down one road and come up another. The Seneto descent on the western side has steep switchbacks on loose volcanic gravel. The Lerai ascent on the southern side is partially paved. Where your rim lodge is located determines how long the drive to the descent gate takes. Lodges near Seneto, like Ngorongoro Serena, get you to the floor first.
Lerai Forest is where the leopards are. Most of the crater floor is open grassland where lions, hyenas, and buffalo are easy to spot. But the Lerai Forest is a patch of yellow fever trees where elephants browse and leopards shelter. Leopard is the hardest Big Five animal to find in the crater. If your guide drives through Lerai slowly and scans the branches, you have a chance.
Lake Magadi and the flamingos. The crater has its own soda lake, Lake Magadi, which attracts flamingos, especially after the rains (November–May). Don’t ask your guide to drive closer to the flamingos across what looks like dry crust. The surface can break and a 3-ton Land Cruiser will sink into liquid mud underneath.
Ngoitokitok Springs for lunch. The most popular picnic spot on the floor, near a freshwater spring with hippos. Black kites (birds of prey) patrol the picnic area and will dive at your food. Eat inside the vehicle or keep your plate covered. It sounds minor until a talon scratches your hand.
Serval cats. The crater floor is one of the best places in Africa to see servals, long-legged spotted cats that hunt in tall grass. They’re active in early morning and late afternoon. Ask your guide specifically. Most visitors focus on the Big Five and miss them.
The Maasai graze cattle on the highlands. Ngorongoro is a conservation area, not a national park. The Maasai have the right to live and graze cattle here. You’ll see herders walking their cattle among zebras and wildebeest on the rim and highlands. This coexistence is unique in East Africa.
August is cold on the rim. Night temperatures drop to 5–10°C at 2,300 metres. If your trip is in July or August, pack a warm layer. Tented camps on the rim provide hot water bottles and electric blankets.
The crater works in any month. Unlike the Serengeti, the crater’s wildlife doesn’t migrate. The walls act as a natural boundary. You’ll see the same density of lions, elephants, and hyenas in February as in August. The only seasonal difference is the flamingos.
The Serengeti Zones Worth Reaching
With 3 Serengeti nights, your operator should position you in the zone that matches your travel dates.
Central Seronera. Year-round resident wildlife. The Hippo Pool, the Simba Kopjes (resident lion pride on warm rocks at dawn), and the densest concentration of big cats outside the Mara. Good for any month.
Northern Kogatende. August to October. The Mara River crossings on the Tanzania side. Fly into Kogatende airstrip, not Seronera, or you lose a day driving. The Retima Hippo Pool nearby is the most reliable year-round wildlife spot in the north.
Namiri Plains. East of Seronera. This sector was closed for 20 years for lion research and only recently reopened. The prides here are less habituated to vehicles. You’ll likely have sightings to yourself.
Western Grumeti. June to July. The Grumeti River crossings as the herds move northwest. Same drama as the Mara crossings, far fewer vehicles.
Southern Ndutu. January to March. The calving grounds where roughly 8,000 wildebeest are born daily. The predator action during calving rivals the river crossings.
Advice for This Route
Travel Vector | Expert Guide Rule |
Mara Entrance Tickets | Valid 6 AM–6 PM strictly. You must exit by 10 AM on departure day. |
Highland Rim Weather | High altitude drops night temperatures to 5–10°C. Pack true warm layers. |
Cultural Photography | Respect junior elders wearing black ritual shukas; request permission first. |
Secondary Crater Trails | Use a second night to trek the untouristed Olmoti or Empakaai craters. |
Visa Redundancy Plans | Pre-apply online 3 weeks early. Print 3 paper copies in case border tech fails. |
- Your Mara park ticket runs from 6 AM to 6 PM. It expires at 6 PM no matter when you entered. On your last Mara morning, exit by 10 AM or you’ll be charged another full day.
- If your trip falls in July or August, see the cold weather note in the Ngorongoro section above before you pack.
- If your trip includes Ngorongoro in August, you’ll see Maasai wearing black shukas on the highlands. This means they’re junior elders who have recently completed initiation. Be formal and ask before taking photos.
- If you have 2 nights on the rim instead of 1, use the second day for Empakaai Crater, a 90-minute drive away. It has a soda lake with flamingos, a forested rim with blue monkeys, and usually zero tourists. Or hike Olmoti Crater to a waterfall with an armed ranger through highland grassland where eland and African golden wolves are common.
- Book Serengeti accommodation 4–6 months ahead for August and September. Fewer lodges across a much larger area than the Mara.
- Siana Gate for entering the Mara. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks.
- Tanzania tipping runs $20–$30 per day for your driver-guide, plus separate tips for lodge staff.
- Pre-apply for your Tanzania eVisa at least 3 weeks before travel. Print three copies. Border technology fails.
- Masai Mara booking operator check: verify your Kenya operator on KATO and your Tanzania operator on TATO before paying any deposit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a Mara-Serengeti trip without Ngorongoro?
The crater adds the densest single-morning wildlife experience on the continent. It fits naturally between the Serengeti and your departure from Kilimanjaro. See the Masai Mara and Serengeti Safari for the version without it.
What is the best month?
August to September for Mara crossings and northern Serengeti crossings. The crater works in any month. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide and the Masai Mara vs Serengeti comparison.
Can I see the Big Five in one day?
In the crater, four out of five is realistic in a single morning. Leopard in the Lerai Forest requires luck. If you’ve already seen leopards in the Mara (likely), you’ll have all five across the trip.
Is a 4×4 mandatory?
Yes, in both countries. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.
Do I need two visas?
Yes. Kenya eTA and Tanzania eVisa. The East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania.
Is this trip safe?
Yes. All three parks have rangers and your guides carry radios. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.
The Part Most Guests Don’t Expect to Love
Most guests book this trip for the Mara and the Serengeti. The crater is the add-on they agree to because it’s on the way. Then they descend 600 metres into it and spend a morning seeing four of the Big Five before lunch. That’s usually the part they talk about when they get home.
