Kenya Tanzania Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide
A Kenya Tanzania Safari combines the Masai Mara and the Serengeti into one cross-border trip, often adding Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Samburu depending on the duration. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 785,000 ($6,040) to KES 2,450,000 ($18,850) per person. This covers private 4×4 Land Cruisers in both countries, Masai Mara park fee charges ($200 in peak), Tanzanian TANAPA fees, and internal flights. You need separate visas for each country. The East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania.

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A Kenya Tanzania Safari is the trip where you see both sides of the migration and two very different safari cultures. Kenya’s Mara conservancies offer night drives, walking safaris, and off-road driving. Tanzania’s Serengeti is vast and strictly managed with no night drives and no off-road. Both are excellent, but they don’t feel the same at all. Understanding the differences before you book saves time, money, and disappointment.
How to Get From Kenya to Tanzania

Your route determines which border you cross. Get this wrong and you add a full day of unnecessary driving.
Namanga. Best for trips that connect Amboseli (Kenya) to Arusha and the Northern Circuit (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti). Namanga is a One-Stop Border Post where Kenyan and Tanzanian officers sit in the same building. The crossing is efficient. About 15 minutes south of the border you get the best roadside view of Kilimanjaro.
Isebania. Best for trips that connect the Masai Mara to the western Serengeti. It’s not a one-stop post. You cross on foot between two separate immigration buildings, and your Kenyan vehicle and guide are replaced by a Tanzanian vehicle and guide. Keep your passport, yellow fever card, and cash on you during the swap, not in the vehicle you’re leaving. The crossing takes 60–90 minutes. If driving from the Tanzania side to the Serengeti, overnight at Speke Bay Lodge on Lake Victoria to break up the 10-hour drive.

The 10-Day Itinerary
Ten days is the standard length for a combined Kenya-Tanzania trip. It covers the Mara, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro without rushing. For 14+ days, add Amboseli, Samburu, and Tarangire.
Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha
3-hour drive. Afternoon boat ride to see hippos and a walk on Crescent Island.
Day 2: Naivasha to Masai Mara
Arrive by noon. Your Mara park ticket runs on a strict 12-hour calendar day (6 AM – 6 PM). If you arrive mid-afternoon, do a Masai village visit or a conservancy drive outside the reserve instead of paying the full day rate for a few hours.
Day 3–4: Full Days in the Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives tracking lions, leopards, and the migration if it’s in the Mara (July–October). Do your night drive and walking safari during the Mara leg. The Serengeti doesn’t allow either.
Day 5: Mara to Tanzania
Morning game drive. Then the Isebania border crossing. See the border section above for logistics. If flying via Nairobi, arrive in the Serengeti by evening.
Day 6–8: Serengeti
Three full days. Central Seronera for the Hippo Pool and resident big cats. If visiting August–October, ask your operator about flying into Kogatende in the northern Serengeti for the Mara River crossings on the Tanzania side. If visiting January–March, position yourself at Ndutu for the calving season.
Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater
Drive from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro. Stop at Olduvai Gorge on the way. Descend 600 metres into the crater for a half-day game drive. Black rhinos are more reliably seen here than anywhere else in East Africa. Overnight on the crater rim.
Day 10: Departure
Morning game drive at Lake Manyara or Tarangire if time allows. Fly out of Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), not Dar es Salaam. JRO saves 9–12 hours of driving.

The two countries share an ecosystem, but each side has parks, species, and experiences the other doesn’t offer.
Amboseli has the best Kilimanjaro views, and it’s in Kenya. The mountain is in Tanzania, but the clearest views are from Amboseli National Park on the Kenyan side. Early morning and late afternoon are the best windows. By midday, clouds usually cover the summit.
Samburu has five species you won’t see in Tanzania. The Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and beisa oryx are unique to northern Kenya. Adding 2 days in Samburu to the Kenya leg gives you species that no amount of time in the Serengeti will produce.
Lake Nakuru is the Kenya alternative to Ngorongoro for rhinos. If your budget or schedule doesn’t allow the Tanzania side, Lake Nakuru has both black and white rhinos in a small park with reliable sightings. On a combined trip, Ngorongoro covers rhinos, so Nakuru becomes optional.
Ol Pejeta has the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Najin and Fatu live under 24-hour armed guard at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia, about 4 hours north of Nairobi. For guests who care about conservation, it’s the most meaningful stop in East Africa.
Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe are Tanzania’s most unique cultural experience. The Hadzabe are one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa. You join a morning hunt with bows and arrows, about 3 hours from Ngorongoro. Nothing in Kenya offers something comparable.
What I Wish Every Guest Knew Before Crossing
- The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. It does not cover Tanzania. You need a separate Tanzania eVisa ($50–$100). Apply for both at least 3 weeks before travel.
- Start in Kenya and end in Tanzania to avoid doubling back to Nairobi. Fly into Nairobi, safari through Kenya, cross into Tanzania, and fly out of Kilimanjaro Airport.
- Allow 14 days minimum to do both countries properly. Ten days covers the Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro. Fourteen lets you add Amboseli, Samburu, and Tarangire without rushing.
- Your Mara park ticket runs from 6 AM to 6 PM. It expires at 6 PM regardless of when you entered. On departure day, exit by 10 AM or pay another full day.
- Ngorongoro’s rim lodges sit at 2,300 metres. Drink extra water and avoid alcohol on your first evening there. Some guests feel mild headaches from the altitude.
- In Kenya, the greeting is “Sasa” or “Mambo.” In Tanzania, use “Hujambo” or the respectful “Shikamoo” for elders. The casual Kenyan greetings can sound rude in Tanzania.
- Game drives work best as a split schedule. Go out at 6 AM, return by 11 AM, rest at camp, and go out again at 3:30 PM until sunset. Animals hide in shade during midday heat. Full-day drives with boxed lunches waste the middle hours.
- Fine red dust destroys electronics and clothing. Use your lodge’s laundry service every 2–3 days for $1–$3 per item. Keep cameras in sealed bags when not shooting.
- Use Kenyan shillings in Kenya and Tanzanian shillings in Tanzania. Paying in the wrong currency at border shops or local restaurants gets you a bad exchange rate.
- Masai Mara booking operator check: verify your Kenya operator on the KATO directory and your Tanzania operator on the TATO directory before paying any deposit.

Do I need two visas?

What Doing Both Countries Gives You
Kenya and Tanzania share the same ecosystem but manage it differently. Kenya gives you conservancy flexibility, night drives, walking safaris, and Amboseli’s Kilimanjaro views. Tanzania gives you the scale of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro’s crater floor with its black rhinos, and cultural experiences like the Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi. Doing both countries on one trip means you see the migration as a single event and you understand why the border between them is political, not ecological. The animals have always crossed freely.
