The short rains don’t always behave the way the calendar says. December 2025 had light, intermittent rainfall with dry roads and clear visibility. The landscape was greener than October but not as lush as a typical December because the November rains came late. Some years the Mara is vividly green by early December. Other years it stays golden well into the month. What doesn’t change is the wildlife.

Calving is the main event. Topis, impalas, hartebeests, and Thomson’s gazelles give birth across the plains, filling the short grass with newborns that draw every predator within range. The Marsh Pride doesn’t need to hunt buffalo when there are topi calves everywhere. Cheetahs work the open ridges. Leopards hunt along the forest edges at dusk.

The intermittent rains dissolve the scent markers that male antelopes spent months laying down. This triggers territorial re-marking behaviour — impala rams chasing rivals, topi males sparring on termite mounds, Grant’s gazelle bucks herding females toward fresh pastures. For visitors interested in wildlife behaviour beyond predator kills, December’s territorial displays add a layer you don’t see in the dry months.

Migratory birds from Europe and Asia are fully established. Amur Falcons arrive after one of the longest migrations in the bird world, flying from Siberia across the Indian Ocean. They hunt in swirling flocks of hundreds over the central plains at dusk, snatching termites mid-air. Steppe Eagles, Montagu’s Harriers, and other Palearctic raptors are settled across the reserve. December is one of the strongest birding months.

Spotted hyena clans are active and present throughout the month. Their social structure follows a fission-fusion pattern — groups split and reunite as conditions change. They are primarily hunters, not the scavengers of reputation, and are frequently encountered during morning and afternoon drives.

Animals shift inland as the rains create new water sources and fresh grass away from the permanent river. The large buffalo herd stays near the Musiara Marsh, but elephants, topis, and gazelles spread across the interior. Your guide checks where the rain fell and adjusts routes toward the fresh grazing zones.
