The 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru

Early departure. Afternoon tracking black rhinos and flamingos at Nakuru. Stay at your selected lodge.

Day 2: Nakuru to Masai Mara via Musiara Gate

Drive through the Rift Valley floor, then branch off the main Narok-Sekenani road onto the C13 toward Aitong. The C13 is rougher and less clearly signposted than the Sekenani approach. A 4×4 is recommended, especially after rain — the black cotton soil around the marsh can turn slippery within minutes of a shower.

The moment you clear the gate barrier, slow down. The riverine forest flanking the entrance is dominated by Warburgia (greenheart) trees that drop fruit elephants crave. Large family herds feed along the tracks within metres of the ranger station, sometimes crossing directly in front of vehicles. Colobus monkeys live in this forest too, and they’re worth listening to. Their normal call is a low, rolling roar that carries through the canopy. But if that roar turns frantic and the whole troop starts crashing through the branches at once, something is hunting them from below. Usually a leopard.

Day 3–4: Full Days in the Musiara Sector

Two full days of game drives in and around the Musiara Marsh, Paradise Plains, and the Mara River. The Marsh Pride is in their core territory here and viewable almost daily, often trailing the Topi Boys coalition as they hunt buffalo near the marsh margins. Cheetahs work the open Paradise Plains. Leopards use the fig trees and sausage trees along the river.

If your camp has conservancy access (Leopard Gorge Conservancy is a 15-minute drive from the gate), add a night drive and a walking safari. Neither is permitted inside the reserve. Animals roam freely between the conservancy and the reserve, so on days you don’t enter the park, you still get excellent game viewing from camp.

During migration season (July–October), Musiara gives direct access to the eastern bank of the Mara River crossing points. Along with Oloololo Gate on the western bank, it’s one of the two best entry points for crossings.

Day 5: Departure

Be at the gate by 9:30 AM. The 12-hour ticket system charges an extra full day if you exit late. On departure morning, avoid the low-lying drainage channels and stick to the higher ridge tracks — a brief overnight shower can turn the clay approaches into traps within minutes. Fly back to Nairobi from Musiara Airstrip. The airstrip is inside the reserve, so your guide needs active digital paperwork ready before the vehicle can clear the perimeter.
