Mara North Conservancy: The Honest 2026 Guide

The Mara North Conservancy is the largest private conservancy in the Masai Mara ecosystem at roughly 74,000 acres. It sits directly north of the national reserve with the Mara River running through its western edge, giving some camps direct access to migration crossings without the reserve entry fee. Only guests of the 12 partner camps can enter. Conservancy fees ($80–$150/night) are included in camp rates. All-inclusive 5-day packages range from KES 260,000 ($2,000) to KES 1,361,100 ($10,470) per person sharing.

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru

Leave Nairobi early to clear the highway traffic. The afternoon is spent at Lake Nakuru tracking black rhinos along the shoreline and watching flamingos from the lake-edge hides. Stay at your selected lodge.

Day 2: Nakuru to Mara North Conservancy

Drive through the Rift Valley floor and enter the conservancy via the northern Aitong tracks. Or fly directly to Mara North Airstrip (one hour from Wilson Airport). The airstrip sits in a low river valley and is prone to morning radiation fog between 7:30–9 AM during seasonal transitions. If your flight is delayed, stay by the lodge fireplace and have your guide check conditions before loading bags. Afternoon game drive. Stay at your chosen camp.

Day 3–4: Full Days in the Conservancy

Two full days across 74,000 acres. Off-road driving means your guide can follow a hunting pack across open ground rather than watching from a fixed track. The terrain is classic Mara with golden grasslands, gentle ridges, and acacia-dotted plains, but on a scale that makes the smaller conservancies feel compressed.

The Mara River runs through the western edge. During migration (July–October), herds cross directly within the conservancy boundary. Camps on the western side like Karen Blixen and Serian can watch crossing points without paying the reserve entry fee. If you want to visit the central reserve crossings (Lookout Hill, the main Mara River points), your guide can drive in on a day pass. Conservancy vehicles enter the reserve freely, but reserve vehicles cannot enter the conservancy.

Maasai cattle graze inside the conservancy on a managed schedule. Herders use designated corridors during specific hours. On a 6 AM game drive, ask your guide where the livestock slept the night before. When cattle leave the temporary bomas at dawn, lion prides move directly into those clearings because the grass is trampled flat, the ground holds residual warmth, and the area is tick-free. Finding a pride sleeping on warm ground where cattle stood an hour earlier is the kind of detail that glossy websites edit out, but it gives the cleanest photography sightlines available.

Night drives with red-filtered spotlights reveal lions actively hunting after dark. Walking safaris with armed Maasai trackers take you to ground level through the grassland and acacia scrub. Both are banned inside the main reserve.

Day 5: Departure

Early morning guided walk along the river. Fly back to Nairobi from Mara North Airstrip via Masai Mara flying packages.

The Conservancy

Mara North was formed in 2009 when 783 Maasai landowners leased their land to 12 tourism camp partners. The conservancy fee revenue funds the land leases directly. Without this income, the land would face conversion to wheat farming, which is already happening on the unprotected borders. The managed coexistence of wildlife and Maasai pastoralism is what makes the model work.

Only guests of the 12 partner camps can enter. No day visitors, no outside vehicles. Roughly 100 rooms across the conservancy means the tracks are quiet even during peak season. A 5-vehicle limit applies at sightings. Guides inside the conservancy practise a gentleman’s agreement of radio silence at private river crossings to avoid drawing vehicles from the public reserve boundary.

Camps range across budgets. Kicheche Mara (9 tents in an acacia valley, photographer-focused, max 4 guests per vehicle), Karen Blixen Camp (Mara River frontage, hippos from the veranda, solar-powered), Elephant Pepper Camp (elephants graze between tents), Saruni Mara, Serian and Richard’s River Camp (reputed to have some of the best guides in the Mara), Offbeat Mara, Leopard Hill, Royal Mara, and Mara Bush Houses (private self-contained homes for families). Pricing ranges from $300 to $1,500+ per person per night.

Ngare Serian has just 4 tents. Every booking includes a private guide and a dedicated vehicle per tent. All guides are walking-qualified. For visitors who want a personal guide who learns their interests over multiple days, this is the most intimate option in the Mara.

Horseback safaris are available through Offbeat Riding Safaris and Safaris Unlimited, both Mara North partner members. On horseback, riders sit at eye level with giraffes and can approach plains game closer than any vehicle.

The Lemek Hills on the northern backbone of the conservancy are one of the few places in the Greater Mara where African wild dogs are reported. They’re the rarest large predator in the ecosystem and sightings are not guaranteed, but Mara North’s size and varied terrain give them the space they need.

Mt. Kilelioni, at over 2,150 metres, is the highest point in the entire Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. Most visitors go up for a sundowner at sunset. Guides recommend a 5:30 AM ascent instead. Martial Eagles, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls, and Rüppell’s Griffon Vultures roost on the eastern rock faces and launch into the thermal updrafts at first light, soaring at eye level with your vehicle on the summit ridge.

Leopard Gorge is where Big Cat Diary was filmed. Leopards use the deep rock fissures to hide cubs. The local guide technique is to stop at the gorge entrance and watch the baboon troop on the rim. If they’re clustered tightly on the cliff edge, staring down and barking, a leopard is moving along the gorge floor below. Park at the southern exit and wait. The leopard often walks out directly in front of the vehicle to escape the baboon harassment.

The Ol Chorro area on the northern boundary protects a resident population of white rhinos. The conservancy allows guided walks on foot with armed rangers to within close range of the animals, an experience that the main reserve’s vehicle-only rules don’t permit.

Fly camping is available from some camps. Guests leave the lodge for a night and sleep under a basic dome tent in the bush with a Maasai tracker standing guard. There’s no electricity and no bathroom. Just the tent, the tracker, and whatever walks past in the dark.

Before You Book

  1. Confirm your camp is a Mara North partner. Only partner camp guests can access the conservancy tracks. A camp outside the boundary cannot drive in, even when the tracks are empty.
  2. Ask your camp about the cattle grazing schedule. Knowing where the livestock slept the night before tells your guide exactly where the lions will be at dawn.
  3. The drive from Nairobi takes about 6 hours via Aitong. Most luxury guests fly into Mara North Airstrip, a 1-hour flight from Wilson. Morning fog delays flights between 7:30–9 AM during seasonal transitions.
  4. Dark blue and black clothing attracts tsetse flies along the riverine undergrowth. Wear khaki or olive.
  5. Request a bush breakfast or sundowner in the open grassland. Eating on the plains without fences or buildings is a conservancy experience that reserve lodges cannot offer.
  6. If you’re a photographer, ask whether your camp limits vehicles to 4 guests. Kicheche does. The extra space and window access makes a noticeable difference to image quality. A Masai Mara booking through a registered operator can match you with the right camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the reserve and Mara North?

The Mara North Difference

I brought a repeat visitor here last August who’d done Olare Motorogi twice and wanted something bigger. On the second morning, his guide went radio silent at 7 AM. We found a quiet Talek River tributary crossing with roughly 200 wildebeest moving across the shallow water. One other vehicle. No dust. No engines. Just the sound of hooves on wet sand and the grunting of the herd. He sat there for 35 minutes without picking up his camera. Afterwards he said he’d finally understood what people meant when they talked about the old Mara, before the vehicle fleets arrived. Mara North is the closest thing left to that.
