It rarely covers tips, alcohol (below luxury level), balloon safaris, or conservancy fees if you enter the main reserve from a conservancy camp. The biggest hidden costs are guide tips ($10–$20 per person per day, always expected, never included) and the $40 per person per night bed levy that some operators quote separately. What’s Actually Included at Each Level
I’ve been guiding for ten years and the question I get asked most often is “what exactly am I paying for?” Every all-inclusive package covers a vehicle, a guide, park fees, a place to sleep, and three meals a day. Everything beyond that depends on how much you’re spending.
At budget and mid-range, all-inclusive covers water and soft drinks during game drives. Alcohol at the lodge is extra ($5–$15 per drink). You get 2 scheduled game drives per day: early morning and late afternoon. Bush breakfasts and sundowner drinks are available but you have to ask for them the night before — the camp assumes you want the standard buffet.
At luxury, all-inclusive usually covers house wines, beer, spirits, laundry, and flexible game drive scheduling — you go when you want, for as long as you want. Some luxury camps include the conservancy fee and park entry fee. Some include a balloon or a massage.
At every level, the following are excluded: guide tips ($10–$20 per person per day), camp staff tips ($5–$10 per person per day), hot air balloon ($450–$500 per person), Kenya eTA visa ($30), and travel insurance. Tips are universally expected and never included in any quoted price. On a 4-day trip for two, budget $160–$320 for tips alone.
The bed night levy. Camps inside the reserve charge approximately $40 per person per night on top of the daily park entry fee. Some operators include this in their quote, some don’t. On a 3-night stay for two, that’s $240 if it’s not included. Ask specifically.
Double fees. If your camp is in a conservancy and your game drive enters the main reserve, you pay both the conservancy fee (usually included in your room rate) and the reserve entry fee ($100–$200 per day). Ask your operator whether both are covered.

The 4-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara
6:30 AM departure. Stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint. Your Mara park ticket runs on a strict 12-hour calendar day (6 AM – 6 PM), so if you arrive late afternoon, do a Masai village visit or enjoy your camp instead of paying the full rate for a few hours. If you fly in via Masai Mara flying packages, the 45-minute flight converts 5 hours of road time into an extra half-day of safari.
Day 2: Full Day in the Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives tracking lions, leopards, and the migration if it’s in the Mara (July–October). If you requested a bush breakfast at Musiara Marsh the night before, this is the morning for it.
Day 3: Conservancy Day
If your camp has conservancy access, use today for a night drive and a walking safari. Both are allowed in the conservancies but not in the main reserve.
Day 4: Departure
6:15 AM sunrise game drive. Exit by 10 AM. The digital gate system charges an extra full day’s fee ($100–$200) if you leave after 10 AM on your departure day. Most lodges won’t mention this. Plan to be at the gate by 9:55 AM.
Where to Stay and What to Request
Where your camp sits and which tent you’re in changes the experience. Most camps will honour a tent request if you make it at booking, not at check-in.
Ashnil Mara. On the Mara River inside the reserve. Watch hippos from the dining deck. Tents 1–5 are closest to the river crossing points. Best mid-range camp for migration season.
Sarova Mara. Solid 4-star inside the reserve. The Club Tents are a small premium above standard — larger, better furnished, quieter. Tents 50+ are the quietest section of camp.
Mara Serena. Hilltop elevation with panoramic views. Good for rhino sightings. Rooms 10–20 have the best sunset views.
Angama Mara. Perched on the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment overlooking the Mara Triangle. At this level, all-inclusive genuinely covers almost everything.
Riverside camps and flood risk. One luxury Mara camp on the Talek River was flooded in 2024. All guests were safe. If your camp sits on a river, ask about flood history and what happens during heavy rains. The wildlife viewing from riverside camps is the best — just know the risk exists.
Camps on the Talek River with footbridges. During the May rains, the vehicle crossing can flood and you’ll walk across a narrow suspension bridge. Pack soft duffel bags, not hard-shell suitcases.

What to Know Before You Go
- Your guide matters more than your camp. A guide who knows which bush a leopard sleeps in and which river bend the crossing will happen at transforms a good safari into an exceptional one. Ask your operator for guide profiles. If reviews mention a specific guide by name, request that person.
- In May, ask your camp for a hot water bottle at bedtime. Mid-range tented camps use canvas that breathes well during the day but feels damp at night. A hot water bottle under the sheets makes a real difference. Ask your tent attendant the evening before.
- Red ants called Siafu are active during the rains. If you leave food or a sugary drink on your bedside table, they’ll find it and build a line through your tent zip by 2 AM. Don’t spray them. Call the camp askari, who redirects them with wood ash.
- Most mid-range camps heat water with wood-fired boilers. You get about 5 minutes of hot water once you turn the tap. Early morning tea delivered to your tent at 5:30 AM is included at most camps, but you set it up with your tent attendant the night before.
- Some camps offer camera and binocular rental ($25/day). If you don’t want to bring expensive gear through airports, ask whether your camp has this.
- The eCitizen signal at Mara gates is unreliable, especially at Oloololo and Musiara. Screenshot your validated QR code while you still have reception in Narok. An offline screenshot is the only way to bypass a long wait if the server goes down.
- Siana Gate has faster eCitizen validation than Sekenani or Talek.
- If you’re on a group tour, the upgrade to a private Land Cruiser is often only $100–$150 per person per day. For two people on a 3-day trip, that’s $300–$450 total for the freedom to stay longer at a sighting and leave earlier in the morning.
- “5th Night Free” promotions run at many camps during green season (January–June). Stay 5, pay 4. Ask your operator which camps are currently offering this.
