I’ve been guiding for ten years. An 8 Days Masai Mara Samburu Nakuru Safari crosses different worlds. You start in the red, sun-baked dust of Samburu, move to the high-altitude wheat fields of Ol Pejeta with Mount Kenya behind you, and end in the predator theatre of the Mara. Nearly 1,300 kilometres of road. It’s the only trip that gives you the full picture of Kenya, from the semi-arid north to the savannah south.

We start in the arid north and build momentum toward the Mara. Going the other direction makes Samburu feel like a downgrade after the Mara.

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu

Depart at 6:00 AM to beat the Rironi traffic. The first 200 km is smooth tarmac. The last 100 km into Samburu is corrugated murram. Arrival for a late lunch and afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Ng’iro River.

Day 2: Samburu Full Day

Morning tracking the Special Five. Afternoon at the Buffalo Springs Champagne Pool — a natural, crystal-clear volcanic spring where you can swim while oryx drink 50 metres away. If we find a Samburu family willing to share, we watch the Singing Wells ritual.

Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta

The rest day of the circuit. Morning game drive in Samburu. Then we drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Mount Kenya. Afternoon at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and a visit to Baraka, the blind black rhino who loves chin scratches.

Day 4: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru

Morning viewing of Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on earth. Then we take the Subukia Tea Route south, climbing to 2,600m through tea plantations. Stop at Thomson’s Falls for the Jackson’s Three-horned Chameleon. Arrive Nakuru for an afternoon rhino drive on the Naishi Plains.

Day 5: Nakuru to Masai Mara

Morning rhino loop and Baboon Cliff. Then we drive to the Masai Mara via the Mau Narok route. Arrival for a sunset drive.

Day 6–7: Heart of the Mara

Two full days tracking lions, cheetahs, and leopards. If the Masai Mara migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. With 3 Mara nights on an 8-day trip, we can split between a conservancy like Mara North for night drives and the main reserve for the crossings.

Day 8: Departure

Final dawn drive at 5:45 AM. Exit by 10:00 AM. Return to Nairobi via the Ngong-Suswa bypass. Arrive by mid-afternoon. If you’re heading to the coast, we can connect you to a Masai Mara and Diani Beach extension. Or book your next safari before you fly.

Samburu: Champagne Pools & Singing Wells

Samburu is a furnace. The heat can hit 35°C by noon, which is why we change the strategy here.

The Champagne Pool. Most people don’t know you can swim inside the reserve. There’s a natural, crystal-clear volcanic spring called the Buffalo Springs Champagne Pool. Go at 2:00 PM. The water is aerated and cool, and you can watch oryx drinking just 50 metres away while you soak.

Singing Wells. If we find a family willing to let us watch, you’ll hear Samburu warriors singing family-coded songs to lead cattle to water. Leave your camera in the car. It’s a functional ritual, not a performance.

Reteti Sanctuary. On Day 2, we can drive 1.5 hours north to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. It’s 100% owned by the Samburu community and is the gold standard of community conservation in Kenya right now.

Ol Pejeta: Chimps & Blind Rhinos

Adding Ol Pejeta Conservancy on an 8-day trip is the smartest move you can make. It functions as a reset before the intensity of the Mara.

Rescued chimps. Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. About 40 rescued chimps live at the Sweetwaters Sanctuary, originally brought from a Burundi rescue centre when civil war forced it to close. You watch them from across a river. One reviewer described learning their individual rescue stories as the emotional peak of the trip.

Baraka the rhino. You can meet Baraka, a blind black rhino who loves chin scratches. You stand within touching distance while he rumbles. About $20 extra, arranged through the conservancy.

Najin and Fatu. The last two northern white rhinos on earth. Protected 24/7 by armed guards. Viewing windows are 8:30–9:30 AM, 11:00 AM–12:00 PM, 3:00–4:00 PM, and 4:30–5:30 PM. Book in advance. $70 per adult.

Night game drives. Ol Pejeta allows night drives inside the conservancy. Servals, aardvarks, striped hyenas, and sometimes leopards. Samburu doesn’t allow them. Nakuru doesn’t. The main Mara reserve doesn’t. This is your one window on the circuit.

Nakuru: Makalia Leopards

The lake has expanded so much it created a skeletal white forest of dead acacias near Hippo Point.

The Makalia leopard. Most guides look for leopards in the northern sector. I head to Makalia Falls in the deep south. There’s a resident leopard who hunts near the base of the waterfall. The sound of the falling water masks the Land Cruiser’s noise, letting us get closer than usual.

Menengai Crater. If the town is too noisy, we head to the rim of the Menengai Crater — one of the world’s largest intact volcanic calderas. Be careful with drones. The vortex winds here have claimed many.

Rock Hyraxes. Look at the rocks at Lion Hill. These tiny, guinea-pig-looking things are the elephant’s closest living relative. It catches everyone off guard.

Subukia Tea Route. When driving from Ol Pejeta to Nakuru, ask for this route. You climb to 2,600m and see the Rift Valley floor beneath you. Far better than the boring B3 highway.
Trout Tree Lunch. On Day 3, we stop at The Trout Tree Restaurant. It’s a giant fig tree built over a pond. Sykes’ monkeys will try to join you for the meal.
Soft Bags Only. Hard suitcases crack on the corrugated Samburu road. Soft duffel bags absorb the vibration. If you must bring a hard case, keep it inside the vehicle.
Mwea Rice Stop. On Day 1, we pass the rice-growing region of Kenya. We stop to buy a bag of Pishori Rice. It has a popcorn aroma that will make your kitchen smell like Kenya for months.
Jackson’s Chameleon. At Thomson’s Falls, local handlers will show you these miniature Triceratops. Ask them to put it on your khaki shirt. It changes colour right in front of you.
Digital QR Audit. KWS rangers do internal audits now. Carry a power bank. If your phone dies and you can’t show your QR receipt, you get charged again on the spot.
Equator Twice. You cross the equator twice on this loop. The Subukia crossing is far less touristy than the Nanyuki one.
Mara North Split. On an 8-day trip, we can spend 2 nights in the Mara North Conservancy for night drives and 1 night in the main reserve for river crossings.
Sweetwaters Gift Shop. Wait to buy your souvenirs here. Reviewers consistently note they have the best prices in Kenya, and the money goes directly to conservation.
Vegetarian Advance Notice. Hotels like Samburu Sopa have excellent Indian vegetarian options, but I need 48 hours’ notice so they can prep the paneer and dal.
The Data Black Hole. Most Mara camps have Wi-Fi now, but the road between Nakuru and the Mara is a signal desert. Make your calls before we leave Nakuru.
KES Over USD. Tips, village visits, roadside food, and small shops all run on Kenyan shillings. Get a mix of KES small notes plus a Safaricom SIM for M-Pesa.

The Suitcase Warning

A guest ignored my warning about soft bags. They brought two hard-shell designer suitcases. We were on the washboard road into Samburu on Day 1. The vibrations rattled the roof box latches loose.

One suitcase hit the dirt at 60 km/h and split open. Clothes scattered across the red dust for 100 metres. We spent an hour picking up everything in the 35°C heat.

On a circuit that covers 1,300 km of mixed road, your luggage takes more punishment than you do. Soft bags absorb it. Hard cases amplify it. When your guide says soft bags only, it’s not a suggestion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need?

The 7-day version works but skips Ol Pejeta. This 8-day version adds a full day there — chimps, Baraka, Najin and Fatu — plus a third Mara night with the conservancy split option. If you have 8 days, use them. See all options on our Masai Mara packages page.

What is the best month for this safari?

July to October for the migration. January is better for Samburu because the grass is shorter and the Special Five are easier to spot. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.

Is a 4×4 Land Cruiser mandatory?

Yes. A minivan can’t handle the corrugated Samburu road or the Nakuru mud. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.

How much are park fees?

Samburu is roughly $70. Ol Pejeta is roughly $90. Nakuru is $60–$100. The Mara is $100 regular, $200 peak. Full breakdown on our Masai Mara park fee page.

Can I see the Big Five and the Special Five?

Yes. This is the only circuit where both are possible. The Big Five come from the Mara (lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants) and Nakuru (rhinos). The Special Five come from Samburu.

What should I pack?

Soft duffel bags (no hard cases), layers (Samburu is hot, the Mara is cool at dawn), wide-brim hat, extra sunscreen, power bank, swimsuit for the Champagne Pool, binoculars (8×42), and a Safaricom SIM from the airport. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.

Is this trip safe?

What I’d Tell a Friend

This trip covers four stops that look nothing alike. Red dust in Samburu. Green highlands at Ol Pejeta with Mount Kenya behind you. A volcanic soda lake at Nakuru. Gold savannah in the Mara. By Day 3, you’ve met rescued chimps, scratched a blind rhino’s chin, and crossed the equator. By Day 7, you’ve watched a pride of lions wake up in the morning mist. The 1,300 kilometres of road between those moments is what makes the story worth telling.
