Wildebeest Calving Season: The Honest 2026 Guide
The wildebeest calving season is one of the most intense wildlife events on Earth, and it doesn’t happen in the Masai Mara. The calving grounds are at Ndutu and the southern Serengeti plains in Tanzania, between January and March. Over 500,000 calves are born within a 2-to-3-week window, with February producing over 8,000 births per day. Predators converge from every direction. Births and kills happen within metres of each other. The breeding that produces these calves happens six months earlier in the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti, when the herds mate during the July-October migration. Where Calving Happens
The calving grounds sit in the Ndutu Conservation Area and the southern Serengeti plains in northern Tanzania. Ancient volcanic ash from Ngorongoro enriched these plains with phosphorus and calcium, and the short grasses that grow on this substrate carry the minerals pregnant and nursing cows need for bone development and milk production. That mineral content is what pulls the herds south every year.
By the time the herds arrive from the northern Serengeti in December, roughly 80% of the females are pregnant. The calving peaks in February. By late March the grasses are exhausted and the herds begin moving west and north again, starting the long journey that eventually brings them to the Mara River crossings in July.
Ndutu sits outside the Serengeti National Park boundary, which means off-road driving is permitted. This is a significant advantage for calving viewing because the guide can position the vehicle close to an active birth or a cheetah stalking a newborn. Inside the national park, vehicles are restricted to roads.

A pregnant cow gives birth standing up in the open grassland. The calf drops to the ground and the impact triggers the first breath. Within 3 to 7 minutes the calf is on its feet. Within 15 minutes it can run alongside its mother. The whole sequence from birth to running happens faster than most guests expect.
A calf that doesn’t stand fast enough won’t survive. Any calf that takes longer becomes a target. Hyenas track the scent of birth fluid and jackals circle the edges, so the margin between standing and being taken is measured in minutes.
After birth, the mother rubs her face and hooves against the calf’s flanks, transferring her scent onto the newborn. This creates a bond that allows her to identify her own calf in a herd of thousands. If a panic stampede separates them, the calf approaches other cows, but any cow whose scent doesn’t match will reject it. These rejections can be violent. Guides keep the vehicle positioned wide to give split families space to find each other.
The calves imprint visually on the first large moving object they see. In busy calving areas, a calf born near a stationary vehicle can lock onto the vehicle instead of its mother. Experienced guides cut the engine and ask passengers to stay low if a birth happens nearby, keeping the vehicle still until the maternal bond is established.
It’s not just wildebeest. Zebra foals, Thomson’s gazelle fawns, giraffe calves, and warthog piglets all arrive during the same wet-season window. The calving grounds are a nursery for the entire plains herbivore community.
Predators During Calving
Predator action during calving is the most intense of the entire migration cycle. Cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and leopards all converge on the calving grounds. Cheetahs make the most spectacular kills because the calves are small enough to take down solo and the open plains give them room to sprint.
The predators don’t hunt inside the dense core of the calving herd. The coordinated wall of protective mothers can trample a lone cat. Instead, the cats position downwind and watch for isolated cows that have stepped away from the group to give birth in quieter ground. Vultures dropping from the sky toward a specific spot often signal a fresh birth, and the predators follow the vultures.
The high loss rate is balanced by the sheer volume. By dropping over 500,000 calves within a 2-to-3-week window, the herds produce more food than the predators can physically consume. Lions and hyenas gorge on afterbirth and stragglers until they physically can’t eat any more, and the remaining thousands of calves walk away.
The emotional intensity catches most guests off guard. Births and kills happen continuously across the plains, compressed into a single field of view. Guests who came for photography often stop shooting and just watch.
Planning a Calving Safari
Because the calving happens in Tanzania, the safari itinerary needs to be built around Ndutu, not the Mara.
When to go. January to March. February is the absolute peak. The rains are intermittent but brief. Afternoons can be hot, mornings cold.
Where to stay. Mobile tented camps in the Ndutu area are the standard. Heritage Ndutu Camp, Ndutu Safari Lodge, Kati Kati Ndutu, Lake Masek Tented Lodge, and Ndutu Wilderness Camp are the most reviewed options. These camps are basic compared to the luxury lodges of the Mara. Power is limited to a few hours morning and evening. Hot showers are on request. The location puts guests inside the calving grounds rather than driving to them.
How long. Three nights at Ndutu is the minimum. The standard itinerary adds 2 nights at Ngorongoro Crater or Central Serengeti for the Big Five and the crater ecosystem. Two game drives per day, early morning and late afternoon.
Booking. Rates are lower than July-August migration season, and there are fewer tourists overall. But the Ndutu camps are small and word of mouth fills them quickly. Book 3 to 6 months ahead for February.
What to bring. The volcanic ash plains produce fine, caustic dust when the rains pause. A lightweight face buff protects the lungs during long drives behind the herds. Dress in layers for cold mornings and hot afternoons. Soft-sided duffel bags for any flights.
The Mara Connection
The calving and the Mara crossings are two halves of the same cycle separated by six months and 800 kilometres. The wildebeest mate during the July-October migration in the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti. The gestation period is about 8 months. By January the herds have returned to the Ndutu plains and the calves arrive.

Can I see calving in the Masai Mara?
The main calving spectacle happens in Tanzania at Ndutu, not in the Mara. A separate resident population in the eastern Mara does calve during this period, but the numbers are far smaller and the concentrated predator drama of Ndutu cannot be replicated. When is the peak?

Is it safe for children?
The births are natural and fascinating for children. The predation is graphic and continuous. Parents should judge based on their child’s comfort level. The camps are unfenced.

Why It Matters for the Mara
I guide in the Mara, not at Ndutu. But every August when I’m sitting at a crossing point watching a herd hesitate at the river, I think about what those animals went through to get there. The calf that’s about to plunge into the water was born on the Ndutu plains seven months ago. Seven months ago it was standing for the first time on the Ndutu plains, barely able to hold its legs straight. Now it’s here, 800 kilometres later, about to enter a river full of crocodiles.
