6 Days Masai Mara Diani Beach Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide

A 6 Days Masai Mara Diani Beach safari gives you one more night than the 5-day version, and where you put it changes the trip. A 3 and 2 split (3 Mara nights, 2 Diani) gives you a third Mara morning for a hot air balloon. A 2 and 3 split (2 Mara, 3 Diani) gives you a full day for the Wasini Island excursion. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 385,500 ($2,965) to KES 1,250,000 ($9,615) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser in the Mara, the direct flight to Ukunda, and beach accommodation.

Three in the Mara or Three at the Beach

Safari Split Option

Best Suited For & Highlights

3 Nights Mara + 2 Nights Beach

Wildlife Focus: Adds a 6th game drive, maximizes Big Five/rhino spotting odds, and opens up a Day 3 sunrise hot air balloon window.

2 Nights Mara + 3 Nights Beach

Relaxation Focus: Best for couples and families; ensures a full 10-hour day for coastal island cruising without sacrificing beach time.

You have one extra night compared to the 5-day trip. You can give it to the Mara or to the beach.

Most of my guests give it to the Mara. Three nights there means six game drives instead of four, and that third morning is when I suggest the hot air balloon ($450–$500). You’re up at 5:30 AM, fly over the Mara at sunrise, land for a champagne breakfast, and still catch your afternoon flight to the coast. Three nights also gives you better odds for rhinos, which are the hardest of the Big Five to find.

If the beach matters more, give the extra night to Diani. Three nights there means you can do the Wasini Island excursion without giving up your only free beach day. Wasini takes about 10 hours door to door, including the 1-hour drive to Shimoni each way. On a 2-night Diani stay, that’s your entire time gone. With 3 nights, you still have a day to do nothing.

Families with kids and honeymooners usually prefer the extra beach night. Everyone else tends to want the extra morning in the Mara.

How the 6 Days Look

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara

Morning flight from Wilson Airport. Arrive for lunch and an afternoon game drive. I schedule your entry to align with the park fee clock so your permit covers all three nights without an extra-day charge.

Day 2: Full Day in the Mara

Six hours of game drives split between morning and afternoon. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. If it’s May, we focus on the Mara Triangle side for better drainage during the rains.

Day 3: Balloon Morning

See the split section above for how this works. This is the day that doesn’t exist on a 5-day trip.

Day 4: Mara to Diani

Morning game drive. Flight to Ukunda Airstrip. By 4 PM you’re on the sand. Sit on the left side of the plane for an eye-level view of Kilimanjaro on the way.

Day 5: Diani Beach

Your one full beach day. Choose between Robinson Island (3-hour glass-bottom boat trip), Shimba Hills (half-day, sable antelope), or the beach and pool. If you went with the 2 and 3 split, this is your Wasini Island day instead.

Day 6: Departure

Morning at the beach. Transfer to Ukunda Airport for the flight to Nairobi. Or take the Dongo Kundu Bypass to Mombasa (45 minutes, skips the Likoni Ferry) and catch the SGR train.

What to Do at Diani With 3 Nights

Diani Activity

Guide’s Inside Track

Marine Park Cruise

Spend a full day on a traditional dhow for dolphin watching and a remote coral reef seafood lunch.

Chale Island Diving

Prioritize these reef sites over main Diani locations for superior coral health; best from October to April.

Galu Turtle Station

Hire a local paddle outrigger canoe (ngalawa) rather than a motorboat to approach sea turtles silently.

Dawn Fish Auction

Visit the beach landing at 7:00 AM to see the traditional daily catch auction; try local spiced coffee (kahawa).

If you chose the 2 and 3 split, you have more room. Here’s what the extra night opens up.

Wasini Island via Pilli Pipa. Multiple reviewers name Pilli Pipa Dhow as the best Wasini operator. Their boat and restaurant are a step above the rest. The trip is a dhow cruise with dolphin spotting, snorkelling at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, and a seafood lunch on the island. Book this for your middle Diani day.

Scuba diving around Chale Island. The coral at the main Diani reef sites has suffered from bleaching. Divers report much better coverage around Chale Island. Diving the Crab is the most reputable operator. They have desks at Baobab, Leopard Beach, Safari Beach, and Southern Palms. Best visibility is October to April. August seas are rougher.

Galu turtle cleaning station. At Galu Kinondo, there’s a natural spot where green sea turtles come to be cleaned by smaller fish. Hire a ngalawa (outrigger canoe) instead of a motorboat. The silence of the paddle lets you get close without scaring them.

Wing foiling. If kitesurfing feels too aggressive, Tribe Watersports at Galu Beach offers wing foiling and SUP lessons. One reviewer who has done this across the world called Diani “one of the best places we’ve ever been.” Equipment rental available daily.

The fish landing at dawn. Near the Baobab Beach end of the road, Digo fishermen bring in the night’s catch around 7 AM. It’s loud, crowded, and real. Buy a cup of spiced kahawa from the vendors and watch the auction.

10 Things to Know Before You Go

  1. Dongo Kundu Bypass. Ignore old blogs about the Likoni Ferry. The bypass cuts the Mombasa-to-Diani transfer from 3 hours to 45 minutes.
  2. Camera Humidity. You land in Diani at 85% humidity from the dry Mara. Don’t open your camera bag for 3 hours. Let it acclimatise with the AC off.
  3. Honeymoon and Birthday Decor. Most Diani resorts do room decorations, flowers, and cake for free if you tell them 48 hours ahead. Boat crews on Wasini trips will sing for birthdays too.
  4. Reef Shoes. Diani’s sand is soft but the coral sections are sharp. A cut foot on Day 4 ruins the rest of the trip.
  5. Lumbwa Flies in the Mara (May). Small, harmless flies that love your exhaled CO2 and sweet-smelling sunscreen. Use unscented sunscreen and keep a damp cloth on your lap to wipe your face. They disappear by July.
  6. Tsetse Fly Traps. You’ll see blue and black cloths hanging from trees in the Musiara area. These are tsetse traps. Don’t drive close for photos. The flies bite like a hot needle and a few will follow you into the vehicle.
  7. Siana Gate. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks for eCitizen validation. I use the Siana Gate in the east Mara for faster entry and a game drive on the way in.
  8. Boda Boda Vest Code. In Diani, only use motorbike taxis where the driver wears a numbered vest. They’re vetted by the tourism police.
  9. Coughing Monkeys. At your Diani resort, if the Colobus or Sykes monkeys start making alarm calls, there’s a leopard nearby. It happens more often than you’d expect at places like Southern Palms.
  10. Masai Mara booking KATO Check. Verify your operator on the KATO directory before paying any deposit. This applies to both safari and Diani agencies.

The Ferry Breakdown

A couple on one of my trips booked their own transfer from Mombasa Airport to Diani in early 2026. I told them to use the Dongo Kundu Bypass. They wanted to take the Likoni Ferry because they thought it would be interesting.

The ferry broke down. They sat in a taxi with no air conditioning for close to 4 hours in 32-degree heat. They missed their sunset dhow cruise. By the time they reached the hotel they were exhausted and the evening was gone.

The bypass exists for a reason.

What the Extra Day Buys You

On the 5-day trip, you leave the Mara feeling like you could have used one more drive. On 6 days, you get it. Or you get a balloon at sunrise. Or you get Wasini Island without giving up your only beach afternoon. Most guests who’ve done both say 6 is where the trip stops feeling rushed.

If 6 days feels too fast, try the 7-day Masai Mara and Diani Beach Safari. Want a safari-only trip? See our 5 days Masai Mara safari or 4 days Masai Mara safari. Want a different circuit?
