An 8 Days Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari is the most balanced “Grand Circuit” in Kenya. It gives you enough time to see the Big Five across the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli without the exhaustion of shorter trips. For the 2026/2027 season, expect to pay between KES 485,500 and KES 1,480,000 per person based on two people traveling together in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser. I’ve been guiding out here for ten years. An 8 Days Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari is the only trip where you stop being a “tourist” and start feeling the rhythm of the bush. In five or six days, you’re always checking the time. In eight days, you finally have room to sit with a pride of lions for two hours just to watch them wake up.
But here’s the gritty truth. If your guide doesn’t know the “Konza Bypass” or the 12:30 PM Mai Mahiu rule, you’ll spend your last day staring at the back of a truck on Mombasa Road.

The 8-Day Itinerary
This is how I run the Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari when we have 8 days. We don’t spend more than 3 nights in one spot (except the Mara), and we break up the transits so nobody hits a wall.
Day 1–2: Amboseli National Park. Start with the “Big Tuskers” and Kilimanjaro at dawn. Two nights means two morning attempts at the clear-mountain shot.
Day 3: Lake Naivasha / Hell’s Gate. Cycling among zebras at Hell’s Gate. A visual reset after two days of game driving. Fischer’s Tower here was the primary scenery inspiration for The Lion King.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park. Rhinos on the Naishi Plains and Baboon Cliff viewpoint. One night is enough — Nakuru is small.
Day 5–7: Masai Mara National Reserve. Three nights for four game drives. This is where the Masai Mara migration happens (July–October), where leopards hunt along the Talek River, and where cheetahs run on the open plains. Day 6 afternoon is your rest — stay at camp, swim, do laundry. You’ll need the energy for Day 7.
Day 8: Return to Nairobi. Final dawn drive. Exit by 7:00 AM if you have an evening flight. We take the Konza Bypass to skip Mombasa Road traffic. Arrive Nairobi by mid-afternoon.
Where to Find Cheetahs in Amboseli

In Amboseli, everyone goes to the main observation hill. It’s the standard shot. But if you want cheetahs, ask me to go to the Noorero area south of the swamp.
Why Noorero works: Lions own the swamps. The cheetahs prefer the Noorero scrubland because the ground is firmer for their sprints. Far less crowded too.
Eye-level boardwalk: Don’t just look down from the hill. Go to the Enkongo Narok Swamp Boardwalk. You’ll be at eye-level with bull elephants wading through the muck. Better than any observation deck.
Finding Black Rhinos at Nakuru
People still come to Nakuru expecting flamingos. They’re mostly gone — Lake Bogoria got them when the water levels shifted. But Nakuru traded pink for prehistoric. It’s a rhino park now, and a good one.
In May 2026, the black rhinos are hanging around the Yellow Fever Trees near Lanet Gate. The trees are blooming and the new shoots pull the rhinos in. Most guides head to the open plains. Wrong move. The “golden forest” near Lanet is where you’ll find them.
Makalia Falls: We have time because this is an 8-day trip. We head to the southern tip to see Makalia Falls. After the long rains in May, it’s a thunderous, hidden spot with an empty picnic site.
Rothschild’s giraffes: Nakuru is one of the last strongholds of the Rothschild’s giraffe — taller than the Masai giraffes you’ll see in the Mara and Amboseli, with no markings below the knee. Looks like they’re wearing white stockings. Most guides don’t point out the difference. Ask yours.

- The Dead Battery: On an 8-day trip, your vehicle’s inverter gets stressed. Charge heavy cameras only while the engine is running on highways. Idling on a game drive kills the battery by Day 6.
- The “May Moth”: In May 2026, do not use the overhead light in your tent while the zipper is open. The moths are massive and love LEDs. Use a red-light headlamp instead.
- Sand River Picnic: On Day 7, ask me to take you to the Sand River Gate. It’s the quietest part of the southern Mara where you can sit on the sand and look into the Serengeti.
- Rest Afternoon: By Day 6, you will hit a wall. Schedule one afternoon at camp. Swim, nap, do laundry. You’ll thank me for the energy on Day 7.
- The “Trash Bag” Hack: Bring heavy-duty trash bags to put your suitcases in before they go in the trunk. By Day 8, even “dust-proof” zippers will have failed.
- The Konza Bypass: On the final drive to Nairobi, skip Mombasa Road traffic. We take the Isinya-Konza bypass. You’ll see ultra-modern glass buildings rising out of the Maasai plains — a 2026 contrast that catches everyone off guard.
- Laundry Strategy: Most Masai Mara packages don’t mention this. Plan for a laundry day at the mid-point (Nakuru or Naivasha). Costs about KES 1,000 at most mid-range camps. Saves you from overpacking.
- Maji Moto Springs: Between Nakuru and the Mara, we stop at Maji Moto. Soaking in natural hot springs with Maasai warriors is more genuine than any gate-side “show village.”
- Individual Animal Names: I know the individual leopards in Masai Mara by name. Ask me. Tracking “Nalangu” is better than just seeing “a leopard.”
- Phone Storage: You will run out by Day 5. Bring a portable SSD or large-capacity SD card reader and offload photos every night. Don’t be the person deleting Amboseli elephants to make room for Mara lions.
- Bush Breakfast: On Day 7, upgrade to a bush breakfast in the Mara. White tablecloth, eggs, toast, and coffee in the open savannah. Costs about KES 5,000–8,000 extra. After six mornings in a dining hall, this hits differently.
Don’t Leave the Mara at 10 AM on Your Last Day
I once guided a family who refused a rest afternoon. They wanted to game-drive 12 hours a day for 8 straight days. By Day 6, the kids were crying and the parents were arguing about camera settings. They fell asleep during a Mara River crossing because they were so exhausted.
This isn’t a race. On a 4 days Masai Mara safari, you push. On 8 days, you pace yourself.
One more thing about Day 8: if your flight leaves JKIA at 8:00 PM, leave the Mara gate by 7:00 AM. The standard estimate is 5–6 hours, but with the 10 AM exit rule, Narok traffic, and construction delays, it stretches to 7+. I’ve had guests arrive at JKIA at 6:45 PM for a 7:30 PM flight. Don’t do that to yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month for an 8-day safari?
July to October is the peak of the Masai Mara migration. January and February are best for clear Kilimanjaro views in Amboseli. Late June gives you the value sweet spot — lower park fees, first herds arriving.
Is a 4×4 Land Cruiser mandatory?
Yes. For an 8-day circuit, a minivan will vibrate your teeth out. Every luxury safari and private safari we run uses a 4×4 for a reason.

Can I add a beach after?
Yes. We run Masai Mara and Diani Beach combos. Or use the Emali SGR train to reach Mombasa — your guide can drop you at the station after the safari.
What should I pack for 8 days?
