I’ve been guiding out here for ten years. This trip is a marathon, not a walk in the park. You’re going to cover nearly 900 kilometers. If your guide doesn’t know the shortcuts or how to handle the 2026 eCitizen gate bottlenecks, you’ll spend more time looking at the back of a truck than a leopard.
I’m David Njunge. I live and breathe these tracks. In 2026, the rules have changed. Park fees have jumped, and the “eTA” system is the law. I’m going to give you the gritty, honest truth about this trip so you don’t end up with “safari burnout” by Day 4.
Get to Amboseli Early
Most tours start at 7:00 AM. That’s too late. In Amboseli, the clouds usually cover Mount Kilimanjaro by 9:00 AM. If you aren’t at Observation Hill by 6:30 AM, you will likely miss the “clear mountain” shot.
One thing about Amboseli. The dust is alkaline, almost powder-fine. We call it “Amboseli snow.” Leave your lens exposed for two days and the zoom will jam. I tell guests to wrap their camera in a pillowcase or a buff between stops. A lens cap isn’t enough.
Also, watch out for vervet monkeys at Amboseli Serena or Ol Tukai. They enter through open windows and have been known to steal phones and sunglasses. Lock your window pins! If you’re at Serena, ask for a room in the 200-series; they have the best unobstructed Kilimanjaro views.
Nakuru Is a Rhino Park

Everyone says Nakuru is famous for flamingos. That’s a “Pink Shifting” myth in 2026. Due to rising water levels, the flamingos have mostly moved to Lake Bogoria. Nakuru is now a rhino sanctuary — both black and white.
The tip: Head straight for the Naishi Plains in the southern sector. This is the high ground where the white rhinos congregate. For a visual change of pace, ask me to take you to the “Out of Africa” Lookout. It’s steeper and harder for big buses to reach, so you’ll have that view to yourself.
One thing that catches people off guard: Nakuru is small. At 188 km², you can cover the main circuits in 3–4 hours. On a 6-day itinerary, one night with an afternoon game drive and one early morning loop is enough. Don’t spend two days here — put that extra time in the Mara.
Masai Mara Needs 3 Nights
On this circuit, I give the Mara three of your five nights. That means four full game drives instead of two. That’s the difference between a distant leopard and watching a leopard drag a kill into a tree.
If you’re staying in the North-West, ask to enter via Musiara Gate. It’s a longer drive around, but the road is much less punishing than the standard route through Sekenani.
During the Masai Mara migration months (July–October), three nights also gives you a realistic chance of catching a Mara River crossing. On a 1-night Mara stop, you’d never have time to sit and wait at the riverbank. With three nights, you can afford to gamble a morning on it.
13 Things I Tell My Guests Before Booking
- Balloon Logic: 4 days is the minimum for a hot air balloon, but in 6 days, you have the perfect window. Book it for Day 5.
- The “Two-Tier” Village: Avoid Masai villages directly at Sekenani Gate. They are “show” villages. Ask me for a community-run one near Maji Moto.
- Camera Fee: Most villages charge a flat fee ($5–$10). Pay it upfront to avoid awkwardness.
- Nyama Choma Stop: Safari picnic boxes are carb-heavy. In Narok town, ask me to stop at a local butchery for some fresh Nyama Choma (roasted meat) to go.
- Tree-Climbing Lions: They aren’t just in Uganda. We look for them in the Acacia Fever Tree forests in Nakuru’s southern plains.
- The Italian Church: On the long 7-hour drive between Nakuru and Amboseli, stop at the tiny Italian Catholic Church built by POWs at Mai Mahiu. It’s a 5-minute detour and a genuine piece of Kenya’s WWII history.
- Gate Strategy: Use Talek Gate or Ololaimutiek Gate. Sekenani can have 45-minute queues in August.
- Pork Ribs: If you stay at Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru, get the pork ribs. Trust me.
- Sunday Luggage: If your trip ends on a Sunday, don’t leave your bags in an operator’s office. They might be locked in when you need to catch your flight. Leave them with a hotel near JKIA instead.
- The Echo Documentary: Watch the “Echo” elephant documentary at Amboseli Serena before your game drive. It follows a matriarch who led her herd in Amboseli for decades. Some of Echo’s descendants still roam the Enkongo Narok Swamp. Knowing the story makes the elephant encounters feel personal.
- Fly-In Shortcut: For about KES 55,000, you can fly from the Mara to Amboseli. It saves 9 hours of driving. Check Masai Mara flying packages for options.
- ID Books: Ask to borrow my wildlife ID book. By Day 3, every antelope looks the same — it helps you tell a Grant’s gazelle from a Thomson’s gazelle, or a topi from a hartebeest.
- Tipping Nuance: Use the “handshake tip” — folding KES notes in your palm while shaking hands. It’s the local way to show respect without making a scene.
The 2026 Logistical Checklist

- eCitizen: All park fees are cashless. Wi-Fi at gates is nonexistent. I process your Masai Mara park fee the night before.
- 10 AM Rule: Under 2026 rules, you must exit the Mara by 10:00 AM on your last day. We start our final game drive at 6:00 AM sharp.
- Health: If you’re connecting through a Yellow Fever zone, bring your vaccination certificate. Kenya checks at immigration.

used to let guests pick the cheapest option at every stop. Then I had a group on this circuit who did exactly that. By Day 4, they were wrecked. The budget camp in the Mara was overcrowded at meals, the breakfast service was rushed, and a generator hummed until midnight. They hadn’t slept properly in three nights. On Day 5, a cheetah hunt happened 200 meters from camp. They slept through it.
I don’t recommend the cheapest camps anymore. On a 6-day trip, sleep quality compounds. One bad night is fine. Four bad nights breaks you. If you can only upgrade one leg of the trip, make it the Mara. That’s where you spend three nights, and that’s where the 5:30 AM wake-up calls matter most. A mid-range Masai Mara safari for just the Mara leg can save the whole trip.

What is the best time for the Great Migration?

Can I customize this itinerary?
Yes. Many guests add a Lake Naivasha safari stop or a Nairobi National Park day trip at the start. Others swap Nakuru for a Samburu safari for a completely different landscape.
Is it safe for solo travelers?

Can I see Kilimanjaro from Masai Mara?
No. Kilimanjaro is over 400 km from the Mara. You can only see it from Amboseli, which is exactly why this circuit includes Amboseli.
What if I want a beach after the safari?
