8 Days Kenya Safari Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha: The 2026 Guide
An 8 Days Kenya Safari Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha is the most thorough wildlife circuit in East Africa, covering the Big Five across the Rift Valley and the plains of Kilimanjaro. For the 2026/2027 season, expect all-inclusive rates for two people sharing to range between KES 585,000 ($4,500) and KES 1,650,000 ($12,695) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, a TRA-licensed guide, all eCitizen park fees, and 7 nights of lodging. Eight days is the sweet spot for four parks. It avoids the safari fatigue that ruins 5- and 6-day attempts at the same route.
Safari Segment | Strategic Focus & Activity Flow |
Days 1–2: Rift Valley Warmup | Active Safari: Cycling through Hell’s Gate and walking Crescent Island to shake off flight fatigue. |
Days 3–5: Amboseli & Kimana | Big Tusker Search: Tracking giant bulls in a community-owned corridor under Kilimanjaro. |
Days 6–8: Mara Grand Finale | Predator Circuit: 3 full nights dedicated to intensive big cat tracking and river crossings. |

I’ve been guiding for ten years. An 8 Days Kenya Safari Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha covers nearly 1,100 kilometres across four parks. It’s the same route as the 7-day version, but the extra day changes everything. You stop rushing between parks and start actually being in them. Eight days is when this circuit stops feeling like a schedule and starts feeling like a trip.
The 8-Day Itinerary
We do the lakes first, hit the Mara for the big cats, and finish in Amboseli. This builds momentum and prevents safari fatigue.
Day 1: Nairobi to Naivasha
6:00 AM departure. Stop at the Italian POW Chapel on the Maai Mahiu escarpment — the smallest church in East Africa. Hell’s Gate cycling and the Oserian Corridor. Evening High Tea at Elsamere.
Day 2: Naivasha to Nakuru
Morning boat ride or Crescent Island walk. Then drive to Nakuru. Afternoon rhino drive on the Naishi Plains and the Out of Africa viewpoint near Lion Hill.
Day 3: Nakuru to Amboseli
The long transit. Free stop at Lake Elementaita for flamingos on the roadside. Clear Nairobi before midday. Arrive Amboseli by mid-afternoon for a sunset Kilimanjaro view.
Day 4–5: Amboseli and Kimana
Day 4 in the main park. Enkongo Narok swamp for elephants and Observation Hill. Day 5 morning at Kimana Sanctuary — a community-owned corridor where the last Super Tuskers hide in fever-tree forest. Afternoon drive back in the main park.
Day 6–7: Heart of the Mara
Three nights mean five game drives. Tracking lions, cheetahs, and leopards. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. Day 7 afternoon: optional hot air balloon or a Masai village visit near Maji Moto.
Day 8: Departure
Final dawn drive at 5:45 AM. Exit by 10:00 AM. Return to Nairobi via the Ngong-Suswa bypass. Final meal at The Talisman in Karen — the ginger fish is world-class and it’s the best re-entry into civilisation after a week in the bush. Or take the SGR from Emali to Mombasa for a Diani Beach extension.
The Maai Mahiu Bypass
The road between Maai Mahiu and Narok is the most critical stretch on this circuit. It’s prone to sudden closures from mudslides or local demonstrations.
I check #MaaiMahiu and #NarokRoad on X every morning before we leave the lodge. If there’s a blockage, we pivot to the Ngong-Suswa Bypass. It’s 30 km longer but ensures you aren’t sitting in a blocked patch of road for 4 hours.
The Kijabe Black Mist. In May, this section of the escarpment can get so thick you can’t see the vehicle’s hood. If I pull over at a roadside café for 30 minutes, it’s because 50-ton transit trucks are coming the other way blind. Better to miss a lion sighting than to meet a truck head-on.
Amboseli’s Kimana Sanctuary
Most 8-day itineraries have you spending two days in the main park. I use one morning for the Kimana Sanctuary instead.
It’s a community-owned corridor. A lush fever-tree forest where the last Super Tuskers — bulls with 100 lb tusks — hide from the dusty main park. It’s a green contrast to the grey swamps. Most tourists never see it because it’s outside the official park boundary.
Amboseli Sopa hack. If you stay here, request Rooms 1 through 10. They’re the closest to the lobby and have a completely unobstructed view of Kilimanjaro. You watch the mountain reveal at 6:00 AM from your porch without leaving the building.
The Best View at Nakuru
Nakuru Target / Spot | David’s Insider Tracking Hack |
Out of Africa Lookout | Cinematic Views: Skip crowded Baboon Cliff; use this Lion Hill ridge for quiet giraffe photography. |
Rock Hyraxes | Evolutionary Marvel: Look closely at the boulders; these tiny creatures are the elephant’s closest living relative. |
Naishi Plains | Rhino Safe-Bet: Dedicate your early morning hours to this southern sector where white rhinos feed. |
Baboon Cliff is where every vehicle stops. It’s fine, but it’s not the best angle in the park.
The rare spot. Ask your guide for the Out of Africa lookout near Lion Hill. This is where scenes from the 1985 film were shot. It offers a wider, more cinematic view of the southern tip where the Rothschild’s giraffes congregate. It’s quieter. You hear the birds, not other tourists’ camera shutters.
Rock Hyraxes. Look at the rocks under your feet. These tiny things are the elephant’s closest living relative. It catches everyone off guard.
12 Things to Know Before You Go
Bush Hazard / Focus | Expert Solution & Operational Rule |
Escarpment Closures | The X Intel Check: Search morning traffic tags; pivot to the Suswa Bypass if mudslides or jams appear. |
Kijabe Black Mist | The Safety Pull-Over: If visibility drops to zero, pause at a café to clear oncoming blind transit trucks. |
Naivasha Mosquitoes | 4:00 PM DEET Rule: Apply heavy insect repellent before dusk; lake-side populations are highly dense. |
12-Hour Ticket Window | 10:00 AM Mara Exit: Strict gate checkout enforcement required to avoid an accidental second-day fee. |
- Sopa Lodge Chain. Using Sopa Lodges at all four parks simplifies payments and means the chef knows your dietary needs from Night 1. Consistent rooms, consistent food.
- Senior-Friendly Pacing. 8 days avoids the brutal 8-hour Nakuru-to-Amboseli drive in one shot. We can split it with a Lake Elementaita stop and a lunch break.
- The Dust Injection. Long transits act as a dust-injector for your bags. Bring a collapsible laundry mesh bag and keep dirty clothes in a sealed bin liner.
- The Talisman Over Carnivore. See Day 8 in the itinerary. Skip the touristy Carnivore Restaurant for your final Nairobi meal.
- Unscripted Drama. On an 8-day trip, we have the time to sit at a leopard sighting for 90 minutes. That’s when the real hunting action happens.
- DEET Is Non-Negotiable. Especially at Naivasha. Apply insect repellent every evening from 4:00 PM. The lake-side mosquito population is larger than inland.
- 10 AM Mara Exit. Under current rules, your Masai Mara park fee is valid for 12 hours. We exit by 10 AM on the last Mara day to save you the second-day fee.
- Lake Elementaita. See Day 3 in the itinerary. A free flamingo stop with no park entry fee.
- Swimming Pools. On an 8-day loop, midday fatigue is real. I pick lodges like Sarova Lion Hill or Ol Tukai that have pools for a reset.
- 10% Deposit, 90% On Arrival. This is a common and safe payment structure if you have an email trail confirming the full amount, schedule, and cancellation terms.
- Italian POW Chapel. See Day 1 in the itinerary. A 5-minute stop worth making.
- Guide Experience on This Route. Ask your operator how many times your assigned guide has done the full 4-park loop. A guide with 10+ years saves 4–6 hours of cumulative wasted time over 8 days compared to one who’s learning the route.
The Guest Who Tried Four Parks in Five Days
I once had a guest who tried to do all four parks in 5 days. By Day 3, his knees and back were in so much pain from the corrugated roads that he spent the entire Mara leg inside the lodge. He saw the Mara from a poolside chair.
On 8 days, time is your medicine. We have the space to take the scenic routes, stop for leg-stretchers, and rotate seats so nobody gets stuck in the back row for 6 hours straight. The extra day doesn’t just add a park. It saves your body.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I need?
The 7-day version works but you lose a Mara night and every transit day feels rushed. This 8-day version gives you 3 Mara nights, 2 Amboseli mornings for Kilimanjaro, and a midday pool break. Browse all options on our Masai Mara packages page.
What is the best month for the Great Migration?
July to October. January is best for Kilimanjaro views. February is low season with shorter grass and fewer vehicles. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.
Is a 4×4 Land Cruiser mandatory?
Yes. Nakuru and Mara tracks flood regularly. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.
Can I add a beach extension?
Yes. On Day 8, instead of returning to Nairobi, I drive you to the Emali SGR station. Three-hour train to Mombasa, then south to Diani Beach.
What should I pack?
Layers, power bank, binoculars (8×42), DEET insect repellent, physical passport, closed-toe shoes for Hell’s Gate, reusable water bottle, collapsible laundry bag, and a Safaricom SIM from the airport. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.
Is this trip safe?
Yes. All four parks have rangers, your guide carries a radio, and the lodges are established. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.
What the Extra Day Buys You
The 7-day version of this trip works. But on Day 4, you’re already tired, and by Day 6, the corrugated roads have rattled your enthusiasm. The 8th day changes the maths. A third Mara night. A morning at Kimana Sanctuary. A 90-minute sit at a leopard tree instead of a 10-minute drive-by. A pool after lunch. By Day 7, when you’re sitting in the Mara grass watching a pride of lions wake up in the mist, you’re relaxed enough to enjoy it instead of counting the hours until Nairobi.
If 8 days feels like too much, try a 5 days Masai Mara safari or a 4 days Masai Mara safari. Want a different circuit? See the Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari or the 6 days Masai Mara Amboseli safari. Browse everything on our Masai Mara packages page.
