Sarova Mara Game Camp: The Club Tent Age Restriction, Why You Can't Self-Drive, and Staff Who Actually Make the Difference

A luxury tent lit up at dusk beneath a beautiful sunset sky at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

Sarova Mara Game Camp occupies elevated ground between two streams, about five minutes inside Sekenani Gate. The camp runs a 24-hour electric fence around the perimeter — lions and elephants stay out, though baboons and the occasional stray dog from Sekenani village still slip through. Keep your tent zipped at all times. Never leave children unattended on the pathways.

The smell when you arrive is wood smoke drifting from the kitchen mixed with dry grass and eucalyptus. Staff meet you with cold towels and orange juice before walking you to reception, where there’s a late-afternoon tea station with cookies if your group needs a meeting point.

Seventy-five tents total. A working chef’s garden where you can harvest your own vegetables. Kayaks on the fish pond that most guests never learn about. And a power schedule that catches first-timers off guard every single day.

Full-board covers: Accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea and coffee makers in your tent, filtered water in glass bottles, Wi-Fi in public areas (expect afternoon drops — don’t rely on it for critical calls), pool access, nightly Maasai entertainment, mini golf, archery, table tennis, darts, pool table, and the round fireplace lounge in the bar area.

Not covered: Park fees — non-residents pay USD 100/day (KES 12,930) January-June or USD 200/day (KES 25,860) July-December. Game drives unless you’re in a Club Tent. Alcoholic beverages. Balloon safari at USD 585 (KES 75,735). Spa treatments. Maasai village visits (bring cash — there’s no ATM at camp). Tips.

Club Tent adds: All drinks, dedicated butler, access to the Olchani Club Lounge with its own pool, and two daily game drives included.

The Club Tent Age Restriction

Before you book the upgrade hoping for butler service and a private pool: children under 13 are not permitted in Club Tents or the Olchani Lounge. This is strictly enforced.

If you show up with younger kids expecting the premium tier, the camp will reassign you to a Deluxe or Family tent on arrival. Don’t waste money booking Club online if you’re traveling with family — you’ll lose the upgrade and potentially the rate.

The policy exists because Club is positioned as an adults-only sanctuary. The private lounge, the dedicated chef (Dominic runs the Olchani kitchen), the quieter pool — all of it assumes guests without young children.

The Daily Power Cuts

Electricity shuts off in the tents twice daily: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and midnight to 4:00 AM.

During these windows, no lights. No hair dryers. No phone chargers. The camp provides flashlights, and if you have genuine medical needs, staff can arrange backup power. But the default is complete shutoff.

The 4-6 PM window is awkward. That’s when most guests want to shower and dress before sundowner drives. You’ll be doing it by fading daylight through the canvas or by headlamp. Pack one.

After midnight, the upside is silence. No generator hum. Just the streams on either side of the camp and, occasionally, hippos grunting somewhere beyond the fence line. The temperature drops faster than visitors expect — daytime averages 26°C but nights can hit 12°C by 3 AM. The hot water bottle placed in your bed during turndown isn’t decorative. You’ll need it.

Choosing Your Tent

Tent Type (Units)

Standout Feature & Best For

Rate Range (Per Person)

Deluxe Tents (51)

Standard Luxury: Best for couples/mix-and-match groups. Canvas walls, stone bathroom (curtain door), and firm mattresses.

USD 172 – USD 522

Club Tents (20)

Adults Only (13+): Premium tier with dedicated butler service, all-inclusive drinks, and exclusive pool access.

USD 347 – USD 800

Family Tents (3)

Multi-Room Groups: Two separate en-suite bedrooms connected by a shared central canvas living room.

1.5× – 2× Deluxe Rate

Deluxe Tents (51 units)

Canvas walls, permanent roof, attached stone bathroom with rain shower. Mini fridge. Hair dryer (during power hours). Wooden veranda with daybed. The “eco card” is a wooden keycard that scans to unlock.

One thing photos don’t show: the bathroom “door” is a heavy canvas curtain. No acoustic privacy whatsoever. If you’re sharing with a colleague or new partner, request a tent where the vanity creates a visual shield, or understand what you’re getting into.

Rates (full-board, per person sharing):

  • Low season (Apr-May): USD 172 / KES 22,250 per night
  • Shoulder (Jan-Mar, Jun, Oct-Dec): USD 230 / KES 29,700
  • Peak (Jul-Sep): USD 380 / KES 49,140
  • Christmas/New Year: USD 522 / KES 67,485

The mattress situation: A consistent minor complaint is that Sarova mattresses run firm — what some call “Kenya standard.” If you wake up with a stiff back, ask your room steward for heavy Maasai blankets layered underneath your fitted sheet. They know exactly what this means and will essentially build you a makeshift pillow-top. Don’t suffer through it silently.

Club Tents (20 units)

Larger bathroom with his-and-her basins, bathtub plus shower, better plains views. The real difference is the all-inclusive package: dedicated butler (George and Andy are names that appear repeatedly in feedback), all drinks covered, Olchani Lounge access with its own pool, and two daily game drives.

Rates (all-inclusive, per person sharing):

  • Low season: USD 347 / KES 44,890
  • Shoulder: USD 400 / KES 51,750
  • Peak: USD 700 / KES 90,545
  • Christmas/New Year: USD 800 / KES 103,475

Olivia manages the Club section. If you have special requests, ask for her by name.

Family Tents (3 units)

Two bedrooms connected by shared living space, four red umbrellas out front. Named tents — one is called “Olonana/Lenana.” Each bedroom has its own bathroom. Some family tents have framed stories and photos of local Mara historical figures displayed at the entrance, which is a subtle touch most visitors don’t notice until checkout.

Rates: On request, typically 1.5-2× Deluxe depending on occupancy.

Tent Selection Tips

The walk from reception to certain tents is surprisingly long. If you’re traveling with older guests or anyone with mobility concerns, mention this at check-in. In rain, the camp sometimes provides buggy transfers — ask whether this is available.

Avoid Tent 7 if you’re sensitive to noise or stings. At least one detailed guest report mentions it sits near ongoing construction and a large beehive.

Interior paths get slippery after rain. Pack shoes with grip.

Why You Can’t Use Your Own Vehicle

If you’re a Kenyan resident planning to drive your own 4×4 down from Nairobi to save on transport, know this: Sarova restricts or outright prohibits guests from using personal vehicles for game drives originating from camp.

You’re required to use their fleet and their spotters. Show up expecting to guide yourself out the gate each morning, and you’ll face unexpected vehicle and guide rental fees.

This isn’t published prominently anywhere. It’s just how the camp operates. If self-guiding matters to you, book a different property.

The Currency Exchange Trap

Sarova calculates in-camp purchases using an internal exchange rate that favors the lodge. If the real-world market rate is 130 KES to USD 1, the camp might calculate your bill at 121 KES.

That’s a 7-8% invisible premium on spa treatments, gift shop items, and premium drinks.

The fix: Always pay in whatever currency the invoice or menu actually lists. If it’s priced in KES, pay KES. If USD, pay USD. Don’t let them convert at the desk.

Things Most Guests Miss

Kayaking on the Fish Pond

The large pond isn’t just for looking at fish. The camp keeps a couple of small canoes and kayaks on hand. They’re free for guests to use. Most people never learn this exists because nobody mentions it unless you ask.

The Garden Chef Tour

Instead of just eating from the buffet, you can book a private session with the camp’s agronomist (Eric and Ignatius work this side). They’ll walk you through indigenous plants used by the Maasai, let you harvest your own vegetables and organic spices, then hand everything to a chef who cooks a bespoke meal right in the garden.

This isn’t on the standard activity list. You have to request it specifically.

Post-Checkout Room Access

If your flight or drive departs late, ask at reception whether you can use room facilities after checkout. When availability allows, they’ll often accommodate this. Don’t assume you have to kill time in the lobby.

Tipping and the Security Protocol

If you want to leave behind quality gear — boots, jackets, utility shirts — as a thank-you for exceptional staff, you can’t just leave items on the bed with a note.

Sarova runs tight anti-theft gate checks on employees. To protect staff from being accused of stealing, you must go to the front desk and sign an official asset release form. Without that signature, the staff member cannot legally take the items off property.

This matters. I’ve seen guests leave expensive jackets behind intending them as gifts, only for the items to end up in lost-and-found because no form was signed.

Staff Worth Knowing

Tony and Ken — Safari guides. If you’re a serious birder or want someone patient enough to wait out river crossings during migration rather than rushing to the next sighting, request either by name when booking drives.

Edward, Peter, and Dennis — Additional guide names that appear across multiple guest reports. All solid.

Muhammad and Daglous — Work the Oloip Bar. Ask them for their off-menu safari iced coffees between drives. They know combinations that aren’t on the printed menu.

Mercy — Tulia Spa therapist. Specifically praised for treating what I call “safari back” — the deep muscle soreness from hours of bumping along unpaved Mara roads. Book ahead during peak season.

Joseph — Activities and entertainment. If you have teenagers or want competitive ping-pong and pool table coaching during the afternoon heat, find Joseph.

Chef Dominic — Runs the Olchani Club kitchen specifically. If you’re doing all-inclusive Club and want off-menu table d’hôte requests, ask for him directly.

Damaris — Oversees the main camp kitchen. Handles allergen-free meals, gluten-free requests, vegetarian customization. If you have complex dietary needs, seek her out on arrival rather than hoping the general system catches it.

Matthias — Entertainment coordination. Handles the Maasai dance performances and evening programming.

What Sarova Does Well

A woman relaxes in a bubble-filled bathtub inside a Sarova Mara Club Tent.
Guests staying in Club Tents can enjoy a relaxing bath after game drives.

The camp works for families with young children. The fenced perimeter, pool, mini golf, and activity options mean kids have things to do beyond game drives. The Family Tents accommodate up to four.

First-time safari visitors often appreciate the structure. Nothing feels improvised. Dining is predictable and high-quality. The grounds are landscaped and manicured — the chef’s garden, the fish pond, the bird sanctuary — and you won’t get lost finding your tent.

Groups and events book here for a reason. Conference facilities exist. Outdoor venues handle weddings.

Where It Falls Short

If you want authentic bush atmosphere, Sarova isn’t it. The electric fence, resort-style pool, and groomed lawns feel removed from the wild. You won’t hear lions through your tent walls.

Solo travelers sometimes report feeling adrift in the large dining room. The camp caters primarily to couples and families.

And the power shutoffs genuinely frustrate people who don’t know about them in advance. If you pack a headlamp and expect them, fine. If you don’t, you’ll be standing in a dark bathroom at 5 PM wondering what happened.

Common Questions

Can I drive my own vehicle for game drives? No. Sarova requires you to use their fleet and guides. Personal vehicles are restricted or prohibited for safaris originating from camp.

Are children allowed in Club Tents? No. Children under 13 cannot stay in Club Tents or enter the Olchani Lounge. If you book Club with young kids, you’ll be reassigned to Deluxe or Family on arrival.

Is there an ATM? No. Bring cash for tips, Maasai village visits, and any on-site purchases where you want to avoid the currency exchange markup.

What if the mattress is too firm? Ask your room steward for heavy Maasai blankets layered underneath your fitted sheet. They’ll create a makeshift pillow-top. This is a known fix.

Can I use room facilities after checkout? Often yes, if availability allows. Ask at reception.
