A Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha Safari combines Kenya’s four most popular wildlife destinations into one 8-day journey. For the 2026/2027 season, expect all-inclusive rates for two people sharing to range from KES 585,000 ($4,500) to KES 1,480,000 ($11,385) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, a TRA-licensed guide, all eCitizen park fees, and 7 nights of lodging. To get the most from this 1,000 km circuit, follow the Naivasha → Nakuru → Amboseli → Mara sequence and budget at least 7 days. Six is rushed. Eight is comfortable.

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha Safari covers nearly 1,000 kilometres across four parks that look nothing alike. Walking among giraffes at Naivasha. Tracking rhinos at Nakuru. Watching old elephants feed at the swamp edge in Amboseli with Kilimanjaro behind them. And finishing with lions in the Mara grass. It’s a lot of road. But it’s the only trip that gives you the full Kenya.

The Route Order

Infographic table listing four Kenya safari stops, activity focus, and critical transit rules.

Safari Stop

Activity Focus

Critical Transit Rule

1. Lake Naivasha

Boat rides & cycling

Relaxed start to break up the initial highway driving.

2. Lake Nakuru

Rhino tracking

Leave by 6:30 AM next day to beat Nairobi traffic.

3. Amboseli

Elephants & views

Arrive before sunset; avoid driving the final legs in the dark.

4. Masai Mara

Lion & cheetah tracking

Start final game drive at 5:45 AM to exit by the 10 AM rule.

There is only one correct sequence for this circuit. Naivasha → Nakuru → Amboseli → Mara.

Start with the gentlest park. Walking, cycling, and boat rides at Naivasha. Add rhinos at Nakuru. Build to elephants and Kilimanjaro at Amboseli. Finish with the big cats in the Masai Mara. Each park is better than the last. One reviewer described doing it in this order as “watching a movie that gets better every scene.”

The Day 4 problem. The Nakuru-to-Amboseli drive is the hardest day on the circuit. It’s an 8-hour slog through Nairobi. Leave Nakuru by 6:30 AM to clear the city before the traffic builds. If you hit Nairobi at noon, you’ll reach Amboseli in the dark and lose your sunset Kilimanjaro view. Some guides add Naivasha as a bonus stop to break this drive even further, but on this circuit you’ve already done Naivasha at the start.

Lake Naivasha Secrets

Most people think Naivasha is just hippos and birds. There’s more here than that.

Oserengoni lions. The boutique Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary on the lake’s edge has a resident population of lions and leopards. It’s the only place in the Rift Valley where you can see a lion with the Mau Escarpment as a backdrop.

Floating dining. Ask me to stop at Under the Swahili Tree. Depending on the water levels, it’s a part-time floating restaurant. Try the Prawn Swahili Curry while hippos surface just metres away.

The otter watch. The real trophy in Naivasha is the African Clawless Otter. Ask your boat captain to cut the engine near the papyrus reeds at Hippo Point at dusk. Look for a ripple that isn’t a cormorant. That’s your otter.

Sanctuary Farm night walk. Walking at night with a thermal-scope ranger lets you see Zorillas (African skunks) and Aardvarks. It’s the most intense wildlife encounter in Naivasha.

Lake Nakuru and the Nderit Gate

Every operator drives to the Main Gate because it’s the one they know. In 2026, that means a queue of vehicles, a slow eCitizen scan, and half your morning gone before you see a rhino.

The Nderit Gate. I enter via the Nderit Gate in the south. You bypass the city entirely and drop directly into the southern rhino territory and the Makalia Falls circuit. While the crowds are stuck in the northern acacia forest, you’ll have the white rhino herds to yourself.

Buffalo Springs. In the southern end of the park, these springs are where animals come for fresh water. While the grass is high elsewhere in May, the area around the springs stays short and green. It’s the leopard-spotting capital of Nakuru.

Amboseli’s Noomotio Mist

Everyone clusters at Observation Hill. I take my guests to the Noomotio area in the far north.

The mist shot. May mornings in Noomotio produce a ground-level swamp mist. Photographing an elephant’s silhouette through this mist with the Kilimanjaro base behind it creates a ghostly look that no other park on this circuit can match.

Birding secret. This is where the Great White Pelicans congregate away from the elephant crowds. The most underrated photo spot in Amboseli.

11 Things to Know Before You Go

Infographic table detailing safari risks, dangers, and expert solutions.
A visual guide explaining key risks and expert solutions for safari planning.

2026 Risk Factor

The Danger / Fine

The Expert Solution

Plastic Bottles

KES 5,000 fine at Hell’s Gate

Bring a reusable stainless steel bottle.

Self-Drive Travel

Banned east of the Mara River

You must use a registered guide vehicle.

Dead Phone Battery

Denied entry at ranger checks

Carry a power bank + print physical eCitizen receipts.

Bank Deposits

Fraud / missing screenshots

Insist on a formal SWIFT confirmation number.

  1. Siana Gate Bypass. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks. I use the Siana Gate in the eastern Mara. eCitizen validation is faster, giving you an extra 30 minutes of morning light.
  2. Plastic Audit Warning. KWS rangers at Hell’s Gate do bag audits. If they find a standard plastic water bottle, you’re fined KES 5,000 on the spot. Bring a stainless steel bottle.
  3. Light Pollution Hack. Don’t stay on the South Lake Road in Naivasha if you like astrophotography. The greenhouse grow lights wash out the sky. Stay on the North Lake side or near Crater Lake for a pitch-black Milky Way.
  4. Mau Honey Stop. On the C12 route to the Mara, buy Mau Forest Stingless Bee Honey with red lids. Fermented and citrusy. The best edible souvenir in Kenya.
  5. 10 AM Mara Exit. Under current rules, we must exit the reserve by 10:00 AM on the last day. We start our final drive at 5:45 AM. Full details in our Masai Mara booking guide.
  6. AA Lodge Warning. Water pressure is often unreliable at AA lodges in the Mara and Amboseli. If a consistent hot shower matters, upgrade to the Serena options.
  7. Self-Drive Ban. Since June 2024, self-drive is banned east of the Mara River. You need a registered guide vehicle for the best leopard territory near the Talek River.
  8. SWIFT Confirmation. If you pay a deposit via bank transfer, insist on the SWIFT confirmation number, not just a screenshot of a form. It’s the only way to prove your payment went through.
  9. Guide Radio Network. On a 4-park circuit, your guide needs contacts across all four parks. Ask your operator if your assigned guide has worked this specific route before. A guide with Mara-only experience might be lost at Nakuru.
  10. The Memory Card Stop. On long transit days, good guides make quick stops for memory cards, fresh fruit, and snacks. A guide who refuses to stop because they’re “behind schedule” on a 7-day trip is managing their convenience, not yours.
  11. Families with Young Kids. This circuit works for children as young as 2. The Naivasha and Hell’s Gate legs are especially child-friendly because kids can walk, cycle, and see animals without sitting in a vehicle all day. Tell your operator about children under 5 at booking so the guide can adjust the pace.

When Your Phone Died at the Ranger Check

A guest on this circuit was so excited about a rhino sighting that he used his phone to record 4K video all morning. By the time we reached the mid-park ranger check, the phone was dead.

We had the Masai Mara park fees paid for, but we couldn’t produce the QR code for the ranger’s scanner. The rule is that the lead guest must show their own QR code. We sat at a ranger post for two hours while we charged the phone off the Land Cruiser’s battery just to prove we’d paid.

Your phone is your ticket now. Carry a power bank and keep a printed copy of your eCitizen receipts in the glove box. Don’t run your battery down on video when you still need it to get through the park.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need?

At least 7. See the Position Zero summary above for the short answer. Don’t try 4 parks in 5 or 6 days. Browse our Masai Mara packages page for all duration options.

What is the best month for this circuit?

July to October for the Masai Mara migration. January is best for clear Kilimanjaro views and Rift Valley birding. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.

Is a 4×4 Land Cruiser mandatory?

Yes. In 2026, Nakuru and Mara tracks flood regularly. A minivan can’t handle it. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.

Can I fly to save time?

Yes. You can take Masai Mara flying packages from the Mara back to Nairobi, saving the 6-hour return drive.

How does this compare to the 3-park circuits?

The Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari drops Naivasha. The Masai Mara Nakuru Naivasha Safari drops Amboseli. This 4-park version gives you everything but needs at least 7 days. The 3-park circuits work in 5–6 days.

What should I pack?

Layers, power bank, binoculars (8×42), physical passport, closed-toe shoes for Hell’s Gate, stainless steel water bottle, and a Safaricom SIM from the airport. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.

Is this trip safe?

Yes. All four parks have rangers, your guide carries a radio, and the lodges are established. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.

The Honest Summary

This circuit combines the two most popular routes in Kenya into one trip. Four parks, four completely different landscapes, and by Day 7 you’ve seen more of Kenya than most people see in three visits. The variety is the whole point. No two days look the same, and no two parks feel the same. That’s worth the extra driving.

If 8 days feels like too much, drop one park and do a 5 days Masai Mara Nakuru Naivasha safari or a 6 days Masai Mara Amboseli safari. Want a shorter Mara-only trip? Try a 4 days Masai Mara safari. Browse everything on our Masai Mara packages page.
