Private Safari Masai Mara: The Honest 2026 Guide
A Private Safari Masai Mara for the 2026/2027 season costs between KES 466,000 ($3,585) and KES 1,220,000 ($9,385) per person sharing for a 6-day trip. You get your own 4×4 Land Cruiser, your own guide, and total control over when you leave, when you stop, and how long you stay at each sighting. The per-person cost drops significantly when you fill the vehicle — a family of 4 pays roughly the same per person as a group tour but with none of the compromises. The optimal structure is 2 nights in a conservancy (night drives, walking, off-road) plus 2 nights near the main reserve (river crossings, highest wildlife density).

Note: Peak season is July–October for the wildebeest migration. A private Land Cruiser costs $400–$600/day. Split between 4 people, that’s $100–$150 each — barely more than a group tour. For a luxury safari quote, request a custom price.
What’s Covered in the Price?
- Vehicle. Private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser with fuel for your entire stay.
- Flights. Masai Mara flying packages (one-way internal flight Mara to Nairobi).
- Guide. TRA-licensed guide dedicated to your vehicle.
- Park Fees. All 2026 Mara fees paid at the gate (cash USD/KES, or card/M-Pesa). Pre-payment available through the KAPS office in Nairobi. For KWS parks on the circuit, fees via eCitizen.
- Meals. Full board, 3 meals daily.
- Evacuation. AMREF Flying Doctors emergency air evacuation insurance.
Excluded. Kenya eTA (~$30), tips (KES 4,000/day for your guide), alcohol and soft drinks (unless Luxury Plus), hot air balloon ($450–$500), international flights.
A private safari is a different trip from a group tour and the difference goes beyond comfort. You control the wake-up time, which changes everything. Leaving at 5:45 AM instead of 6:30 AM means you catch the cats while they’re still active from the night. By 7:30 AM, most predators are settling down. Those 45 minutes are the difference between watching a hunt and watching a sleeping lion. Over a 4-day trip, earlier departures compound into significantly more predator action.
On a group vehicle, the group decides when to move on. On your own vehicle, you decide. If you want to sit with a cheetah family for 3 hours in silence, you sit. If you want to skip the hippo pool that everyone else stops at, you skip it. That freedom is what you’re paying for.
The 6-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha
3-hour drive. Afternoon boat ride to see hippos. Stay at Enashipai Resort.
Day 2: Naivasha to Masai Mara
5-hour drive. Your Mara park ticket runs on a strict 12-hour calendar day (6 AM – 6 PM), so if you arrive late afternoon, enjoy your camp and save the reserve entry for 6 AM the next morning. Private sunset game drive in the conservancy.
Day 3–5: Full Days in the Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives tracking lions, leopards, and the migration if it’s in the Mara (July–October). Night drive in the conservancy one evening. Walking safari one morning. Ask your camp about a bush breakfast out on the plains instead of the lodge buffet — it’s included but needs to be requested the night before.
Day 6: Departure
Sunrise game drive looking for rhinos and elephants. Exit by 10 AM to avoid an extra day’s park fee. Fly back to Nairobi via Masai Mara flying packages or drive.
The 2+2 Conservancy and Reserve Split
The optimal private safari structure is 2 nights in a conservancy and 2 nights near the main reserve. Group tours can’t do this because they follow fixed routes.
Conservancy nights give you night drives, walking safaris, off-road driving for better photography angles, and a 5-vehicle limit at sightings. Mara North, Naboisho, and Olare Motorogi are the main options.
Reserve nights put you closer to the Mara River crossings and the highest general wildlife density. The southern Mara near the Sand River is the quietest part of the reserve — you can drive for 30–40 minutes without seeing another vehicle. During migration, herds cross here with a fraction of the audience they get at the popular crossing points.
Your guide adjusts the plan based on where the action is each day. That’s the whole point of private.

Not all private safari vehicles are the same. Your guide and vehicle come from either your lodge or from the tour operator who booked your trip, and the two give you a different experience.
A lodge vehicle belongs to the camp where you’re staying. The guide works that area every day. They know which thicket the resident leopard dragged a kill into yesterday. They check the vulture patterns overhead. They read the behaviour of the animals around them rather than relying on the radio. Lodge vehicles usually cost more, but the guide’s local knowledge is often better.
An operator vehicle is brought in by the tour company. The guide may rotate between areas and depend more on the radio network to locate animals. The radio tells you where the crowd is. The bush tells you where the animals are. Both approaches work, but if finding animals before the crowd arrives matters to you, ask whether your guide is camp-based or rotates in.
Either way, ask whether your guide is KPSGA-qualified (Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association). A Gold-level KPSGA guide has years of field experience and advanced tracking skills that a standard driver-guide doesn’t.
You can also mix and match — book your room directly with the lodge and source your vehicle and guide separately from an operator. This sometimes saves money and lets you choose a stronger guide.

- A private Land Cruiser costs $400–$600 per day. Split between 4 people, that’s $100–$150 each. If you’re a family or a group of friends, private is almost the same price per person as a group tour but with total flexibility. The cost only becomes prohibitive for solo travelers or couples.
- The front passenger seat gives you the best photography angle. A lion at eye level through the side window looks powerful. The same lion photographed from above through the pop-top looks smaller. For the morning drive, sit up front. For the afternoon when light is overhead, use the roof.
- Self-drive is technically allowed but strongly discouraged. There are few signposts, GPS accuracy is poor, phone signal drops, and the black cotton soil traps 2WD vehicles. You won’t find animals without the radio network and local knowledge. A private guide is not a luxury in the Mara — it’s a navigation tool.
- Siana Gate has faster ticket processing than Sekenani or Talek.
- Screenshot your payment confirmation before leaving Nairobi. Signal at the Mara gates is unreliable, especially when it rains.
- In May, ask your camp for a hot water bottle at bedtime. Tented camps feel damp at night.
- A private safari can be organized within days if accommodation is available. Unlike group tours with fixed departure dates, private trips are built around your dates.
- The mid-range private sweet spot is $400–$600 per person per day all-inclusive. Below $400, you’re likely in a basic camp. Above $600, you’re entering luxury territory. For most travellers, this range delivers the core private experience.
