A Mid-Range Masai Mara Safari in 2026 costs between KES 235,500 ($1,810) and KES 442,000 ($3,400) per person sharing for a 4-day trip. You get a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, 3–4 star tented camps with private bathrooms, and full board meals. The jump from budget to mid-range is only about 30% more in price but the difference in comfort and game drive quality is the biggest value upgrade in Kenya safari. Camps like Ashnil Mara on the Mara River and Ilkeliani on the Talek River offer direct reserve access without the $1,000-a-night price tag of luxury camps.
What a Mid-Range Masai Mara Safari Costs (2026/2027)
These are all-inclusive prices for two people traveling together, covering the private vehicle, park fees, accommodation, and meals.

I’ve been guiding for ten years and most of my repeat guests book at this level. You get your own Land Cruiser, a guide who’s been watching the same leopard for three seasons and knows where she’ll be at sunrise, and a camp where you sleep well and shower in hot water. The lions outside your tent don’t care what you paid for the room. At mid-range, you’re comfortable enough to enjoy 6 AM wake-ups for four days straight, which is really what matters.
That 30% bump from budget covers a lot more than most people expect.
The 4-Day Itinerary
Three nights gives you 6 game drives, enough to find all five of the Big Five and still have time for a Masai village visit and a night drive in a conservancy.
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara
6:30 AM departure. Stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint. Your Mara park ticket runs on a strict 12-hour calendar day (6 AM – 6 PM), so if you arrive late afternoon, do a Masai village visit or enjoy camp instead of paying the full rate for a few hours.
Day 2: Full Day in the Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives tracking lions, leopards, and the migration if it’s in the Mara (July–October). Pack a picnic lunch and stay out near the Mara River. Ask your camp about a bush breakfast at Musiara Marsh instead of the lodge buffet — eating an omelet while a fish eagle calls overhead costs nothing extra and changes the whole morning.
Day 3: Conservancy Day
If your camp has conservancy access, use today for a night drive and a walking safari. Both are allowed in the conservancies but not in the main reserve. Off-road driving is also permitted, which means your guide can position the vehicle for better photography angles instead of being stuck on the road.
Day 4: Departure
6:15 AM sunrise game drive. Breakfast at the lodge. Exit by 10 AM to avoid being charged an extra day’s park fee. Drive back to Nairobi, arriving by 4 PM.

Where your camp sits relative to the two rivers determines your safari experience more than the camp itself.
Camps on the Mara River are best for migration crossings (August–October). Ashnil Mara is the strongest mid-range option here — it sits on the river inside the reserve, has a hippo pool visible from the swimming pool, and multiple reviewers describe it as “the best balance of adventure and comfort.” Matira Camp and Mara Eden are also on the Mara River but trend higher in price.
Camps on the Talek River are cheaper and better for general year-round game viewing. Ilkeliani Camp has a private footbridge directly into the reserve — your game drive ends, you cross the bridge, and you’re at camp while other guests are still driving from the gate. Basecamp Explorer is LEED Gold certified, solar-powered, with Maasai-led guiding — the best eco-option at this level. Julia’s River Camp and Mara Leisure Camp are also on the Talek and family-friendly.
Camps further from the reserve cost less but you lose game drive time commuting. Mara Sopa Lodge is one of the most booked mid-range lodges (100 rooms, two pools, reliable food) but it’s 19 km from the reserve gate. That commute eats 30–60 minutes each way. If maximising time with wildlife matters more than the pool, choose a camp closer to or inside the reserve.
Sarova Mara is a solid 4-star inside the reserve. The Club Tents are a small premium above the standard tents — larger, better furnished, quieter. It’s a way to get a taste of luxury while staying in the mid-range price band.
Should You Stay in the Reserve or a Conservancy
The Masai Mara has two types of safari area, and understanding the difference matters at the mid-range level because you’re paying for experiences (night drives, walking) that only one type offers.
The main reserve is open to everyone who pays the daily fee. During peak season, expect 12–15 vehicles at a good sighting like a leopard in a tree. No night drives, no walking, no off-road driving. The reserve has the Mara River crossings and the highest density of wildlife.
The conservancies (Mara North, Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Ol Kinyei) limit vehicle numbers. Night drives, walking safaris, and off-road driving are all allowed. One TripAdvisor poster who stayed in a conservancy wrote that they “never saw more than two other vehicles in a day.” Wildlife moves freely between the reserve and the conservancies — there’s no fence.
The Mara Triangle is the best compromise. It’s technically part of the reserve but managed separately with vehicle limits and off-road driving allowed. It has excellent Mara River crossing access and is far less crowded than the main reserve. Only 2 permanent lodges inside the Triangle, so book early.
Double fees. If your camp is in a conservancy and you also enter the main reserve for a game drive, you pay both the conservancy fee (usually included in your accommodation rate) and the reserve entry fee ($100–$200/day). Ask your operator what’s included before booking.

- Book at least three nights. One night gives you 2 game drives, which barely justifies the 5-hour drive from Nairobi. Two nights gives you 4 drives but no room for a night drive or walking safari. At three nights you get 6 drives and enough breathing room to add the conservancy experiences that make mid-range worth the money.
- When you see “tented camp” in a mid-range listing, it means a permanent structure with a real bed, a private bathroom, flush toilet, and hot shower. Not a sleeping bag on the ground. The word “tent” confuses a lot of first-time visitors, so check photos before you assume the worst.
- Most mid-range camps heat water with wood-fired boilers, not electric systems. You get about 5 minutes of hot water once you turn the tap. Shower with purpose.
- If you’re visiting in May, ask your camp for a hot water bottle at bedtime. The canvas walls of mid-range tented camps breathe well during the day but feel damp at night. A hot water bottle under the sheets sounds old-fashioned until you’ve spent a cold night without one.
- Red ants called Siafu are active during the rains. If you leave food or a sugary drink on your bedside table, they’ll find it from a long way off and build a line through your tent zip by 2 AM. Don’t spray them. Call the camp askari, who redirects them with wood ash.
- If your camp sits on the Talek River with a footbridge crossing, pack soft duffel bags. During the May rains, the vehicle drift can flood and you’ll walk across a narrow suspension bridge instead. Porters carrying hard-shell suitcases across a swinging bridge over a swollen river is a scene you want to avoid being part of.
- If photography matters to you, choose a conservancy camp. Off-road driving is allowed in the conservancies, which means your guide can angle the vehicle for better light instead of being stuck on a road behind 12 other vehicles. At this price level, Basecamp and Ilkeliani both offer conservancy access without the luxury price tag.
- I use Siana Gate instead of Sekenani or Talek because eCitizen validation is faster there. Signal at all the gates is unreliable, so screenshot your validated QR code while you still have reception in Narok.
- See Day 4 in the itinerary about the 10 AM exit rule on your last morning.
- Before you pay any deposit, verify your operator on the KATO directory. At the mid-range level, the most common problem is being promised a private Land Cruiser and showing up to find a shared minivan. A Masai Mara booking through a KATO-registered operator protects you from this.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between mid-range and budget?
The vehicle (Land Cruiser vs minivan), the accommodation (private bathroom vs shared), and the location (inside or at the gate vs a long commute). The wildlife is the same.
Can I see the Big Five in 3 days?
Yes. Lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo are reliable. Rhinos require your guide to know the current locations.
Is a 4×4 mandatory?
Yes. In the wet season (April–June), the black cotton soil traps 2WD vehicles. Even in dry season, a 4×4 with a pop-up roof gives you better game viewing. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.
Should I stay in the reserve or a conservancy?
See the Reserve vs Conservancy section above. If migration crossings are your priority, stay near the Mara River. If fewer crowds, night drives, and walking matter more, stay in a conservancy.
What Mid-Range Actually Gets You
The guide matters more than the bed. The camp location matters more than the pool. And a Land Cruiser in the wet season isn’t a luxury, it’s the reason you see the cheetah hunt instead of watching from a stuck minivan 200 metres away.
