I’ve been guiding out here for ten years. A 5 Days Masai Mara Nakuru Naivasha Safari covers birdlife, rhinos, and the Big Five in three very different parks. But this trip is won or lost in the logistics — the Masai Mara park fee hikes, the ecological shifts in the Rift Valley, and one traffic bottleneck that can eat your entire first morning.
The 6 AM Rironi Trap
I’m being honest: if you want to see leopards in Lake Nakuru on Day 1, you have to be at the gate by 10:30 AM. To do that, you need a 6:00 AM departure from your Nairobi hotel.
The Rironi highway expansion is a mess of construction and trucks. If you leave at 7:30 AM, you’ll sit in a traffic jam for two hours. Leaving at dawn lets us clear the “Rironi Trap” before the trailers wake up. It’s the difference between seeing a rhino before lunch and seeing nothing but heat haze in the afternoon.
The Order You Visit These Parks Matters
Most operators get this wrong. They put the Mara first because it’s the big name.
The Mara is the grand finale. It has the highest wildlife density and the Masai Mara migration action. If you go to the Mara on Day 1 and then head to Naivasha on Day 4, the Naivasha giraffes will feel like “just another animal.” One reviewer put it well — it’s like watching the ending of a movie before the beginning. Start with Naivasha (walking/cycling), move to Nakuru (rhinos), and finish with the big cats in the Mara.
Naivasha Is More Than a Boat Ride

Naivasha isn’t a “National Park” in the traditional sense. It’s a change of pace.
Simba Lodge lawn: If we stay at Naivasha Simba Lodge, you’ll find zebras grazing on the lawn at breakfast. They aren’t fenced. They wander in from the surrounding conservancy. Kids go crazy for it.
The “Oloiden” flamingo pivot: Everyone expects flamingos in Nakuru. But in 2026, Nakuru is too deep for them. Head to Lake Oloiden instead. It’s a saline crater lake next to Naivasha where the pink flamingos are currently congregating. You get the “pink lake” shot without the $100 park fee.
Elsamere High Tea: For a break from the vehicle, we stop at Elsamere, the former home of Joy Adamson (Born Free). The 3:00 PM High Tea on the lawn while Colobus monkeys swing overhead is the most “civilized” safari moment you’ll have. Costs about KES 1,500 per person.
Horseback safari: Instead of a boat ride, some lodges offer horseback safaris where you ride among giraffes and zebras with no engine, no barriers. Zebras don’t see the horse as a threat, so you can get within five meters. About KES 8,000–12,000 per person. You need to be a confident rider — these aren’t pony rides.
Hippo safety: Lake Naivasha has hippos on land at night. Do not walk around your lodge after dark without a guard. One guest described hearing “loud breathing” outside their tent at 2 AM — it was a hippo three meters away. They are faster than you think.
The Lions in Nakuru Climb Trees
Uganda gets all the credit for tree-climbing lions. Nakuru doesn’t get mentioned. But the lions here climb trees for the same reason — the ground is wet and uncomfortable when the lake is high.
The trick is knowing where to look. The southern woodland between the Makalia Falls track and the southern shore is where I find them. Other guides drive past scanning the grass. I drive slow and look up. The lions are in the acacias, usually asleep, usually alone.
Makalia mud-trap: In May 2026, the soil near the falls swallows vehicles. If I say “the track looks soft,” trust me. We’ll head to Lion Hill instead — higher ground and where the lions go when it rains.
The fenced advantage: Unlike the Mara (unfenced) or Amboseli (partially fenced), Nakuru is fully fenced. Nothing migrates out. This means the animal density per square kilometer is high, and the rhino sighting rates are better than almost anywhere else in Kenya. It’s the reason this park is on the Masai Mara Nakuru Naivasha Safari circuit in the first place.

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha
Depart at 6:00 AM. Stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint for photos. Afternoon boat safari on the lake.
One thing to know: the boatman is a local, not your safari guide. Quality varies. I only work with boatmen who know their bird species and don’t rush the ride. If yours tries to wrap up in 30 minutes, tell me.
Day 2: Hell’s Gate and Lake Nakuru
Cycling in Hell’s Gate among giraffes and zebras. Fischer’s Tower here was the primary scenery inspiration for The Lion King.
Gear warning: You need closed-toe shoes for the gorge walk. The volcanic rock gets wet from underground springs and turns slippery. Flip-flops are a recipe for a cut leg. Don’t skip the gorge for “more game drive time” — the narrow walls, steam vents, and hot springs are a once-in-a-lifetime walk.
The drive to Nakuru is only 1.5 hours. We arrive for lunch and an afternoon game drive on the Naishi Plains for rhinos.
Day 3: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara
We use the C12 Mau Narok route (the Highland Shortcut). It’s faster in 2026 and takes us through wheat fields instead of the dusty main highway. We arrive at the Masai Mara for a sunset drive.
Day 4: Full Day in the Mara
Tracking lions and cheetahs in the morning. If the Mara River crossing is happening (July–October), we position near the banks. Afternoon drive focused on leopards along the Talek River.
If you have the energy, we visit a community-run Masai village near Maji Moto — not the “show villages” at the gate.
Day 5: 10 AM Exit and Return
Dawn game drive. We exit by 10:00 AM to reach Nairobi by 4:00 PM — enough time for an evening flight or to book your next safari.
Why I Won’t Put You in a Minivan
I once saw a group on a Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru safari who booked a budget minivan. Seven people in one van. They hit the black cotton mud near Makalia Falls in Nakuru and were stuck for four hours. Because it was a minivan, it didn’t have the clearance to get out. They missed their afternoon drive and their Naivasha boat ride.
This route is the most popular budget group safari in Kenya. If you book a group van with 7 people, you aren’t on a safari — you’re on a crowded bus with a pop-up roof. Confirm the vehicle type and max passengers before you pay. A private Land Cruiser for two costs more, but the experience is a different trip entirely.

What is the best month for this safari?
The best time to visit Masai Mara is July–October for the migration. For bird watching in Naivasha and Nakuru, January–March is the sweet spot.
How much are 2026 park fees?

Can I do a night walk?

The Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari adds Amboseli for Kilimanjaro views and elephant herds. This Nakuru-Naivasha route trades Amboseli for Hell’s Gate cycling, boat safaris, and horseback riding. Different experiences, not better or worse.
