A Hidden Retreat by the Water’s Edge

Tucked away in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy, Alex Walker’s Serian Lodge stands as one of the region’s most secluded safari camps. More intimate than its sister property, Serian Safari Camp, this exclusive retreat is perched along the Mara River’s edge. Access is only granted via a narrow rope bridge, adding to its sense of adventure and exclusivity. Upon arrival, guests step into a serene eco-haven, where the untouched wilderness takes center stage. Situated near the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the lodge offers easy access for day excursions while remaining far from the crowded safari circuits. It’s an exceptional choice for eco-conscious travelers who value sustainability and seek a peaceful yet immersive safari experience.

Ngare Serian is distinguished by its small scale, offering just four spacious tents. This limited capacity makes it an excellent choice for families or groups of friends looking for a private escape. Open throughout the year, the demand for these tents is high, particularly in peak season. Each tent is positioned strategically along the river, offering uninterrupted views of the rushing river and the hippos that call it home. In the distance, the Oloololo Escarpment’s towering cliffs frame the horizon, adding to the lodge’s breathtaking backdrop. Without internet connectivity, guests can truly disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the pristine environment.

Raised on sturdy wooden platforms, the spacious tents provide a front-row seat to the wild, making mornings with a cup of coffee all the more magical. Inside, the blend of rustic elegance and thoughtful design is evident. Each tent boasts a private en-suite bush bathroom, complete with an open-air shower, hot and cold running water, and a flush toilet. Solar power and a backup generator ensure continuous electricity, supporting an eco-friendly approach. Classic furnishings, such as antique pieces, plush Zanzibar four-poster beds, and vibrant oriental rugs, create a warm and inviting ambiance. Outdoor sunken bathtubs on the veranda add a luxurious touch, allowing guests to soak in the beauty of the Mara while being serenaded by the sounds of the wild. The tents also include twin basins and protective mosquito nets, ensuring a comfortable stay. For those craving extra solitude, the farthest tent offers the highest level of privacy.

A key highlight of Ngare Serian is its dedicated team, primarily composed of local Maasai staff known for their warmth and attentive service. Their deep-rooted connection to the land enhances each guest’s experience, making safaris even more insightful. Beyond providing employment, the lodge actively supports local Maasai communities and maintains strong ties with nearby villages. Communal spaces, including a cozy lounge and mess tent, foster camaraderie among guests. Dining at Ngare Serian is a delight, featuring delicious farmhouse-style meals served family-style. Guests can savor exquisite dishes under the starlit sky by the river or within the camp’s intimate dining space. Outdoor dining enhances the experience, creating unforgettable moments in the heart of nature. With all meals and beverages- excluding premium selections- included, dining becomes an integral part of the lodge’s inviting atmosphere.

Activities at Alex Walker’s Ngare Serian Lodge

Ngare Serian’s prime location offers a wealth of activities for exploration and adventure. Every guest enjoys the privilege of a private vehicle, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and skilled spotter, ensuring rewarding wildlife sightings. The lodge’s presence in the exclusive conservation area allows for unrestricted game drives, including thrilling night excursions and guided walking safaris. Fishing in the Mara River adds another layer of adventure, with all activities conducted in a secure and protected environment. Unforgettable bush breakfasts, picnic lunches, and sundowners are arranged at scenic spots, enhancing the magic of the safari. For those seeking an even more immersive experience, options such as fly camping, cultural visits to Maasai villages, hot-air balloon rides, stargazing, and birdwatching—featuring over 450 species—are available. Some of these experiences require an additional fee, but they elevate the adventure, particularly during the great migration.

One of Ngare Serian’s most enchanting features is its nest treehouse, the lodge’s exclusive treehouse. Perfect for an overnight retreat or an afternoon escape, this treetop sanctuary allows guests to sleep beneath the African night sky, enveloped by the sounds of the bush. Nestled on the western bank of the Mara River in a sturdy Warburgia tree, it features two nest-shaped beds, ideal for a romantic getaway. The space also accommodates additional bed rolls, making it suitable for families seeking a unique adventure. Just a short walk from the main camp, The Nest provides seclusion without compromising accessibility to the lodge’s amenities. A cutting-edge night vision camera offers a glimpse into the nocturnal activities of the surrounding wildlife. Booking The Nest incurs an additional charge, and guests must retain their primary accommodations at Ngare Serian, ensuring a balance between adventure and social interactions within the camp.

Tripadvisor comments Ngare Serian

"People said “it will be life changing”.. and I thought “hmmmmm, really?” Well.. they were right ! I really can’t begin to tell you how magical it was. Let’s see, where do I start? How about with the accommodations? We stayed house/tent that was located right on the river. Each night we watched the hippopotamus lineup to go to sleep. Each afternoon we watch the giraffes come down to the river for a drink, and then walk off for their nightly prints. I took a walk about with Adrienne, which was quite eventful. I will say no more because I wouldn’t want to ruin it for you. The food was fabulous. Everybody there was so helpful and kind. And now for the animals, lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, zebra, and the most amazing wildebeest crossing of more than 5000 wildebeest !! We had so much fun and neither one of us wanted to come home, which is the first ever on a three week trip. And we have been on many many wonderful adventures but this one tops them by far thank you Shela, Adrienne, Joel, Dennis, and everyone else .You made it for us."
"Wonderful camp in the Mara ..you need to take a breath to walk over the rickety bridge but that made it more special. The accommodation was very comfortable although the dining and sitting area is quite small when the camp is full. The food was good and they will listen to any preferences. Lots of hippos and cheetahs which we had not seen at the prior camp. Wonderful lion sightings with cubs. Changed our views on hyenas once we had spent time watching them with young ones at their den (pups are like black lab puppies!!) Animal sightings were fabulous.. Thanks Shela and team"
