Entim Mara Camp: River Tents vs Plains View, the Late-Arrival Fee Trap, and Why Your Airstrip Transfer Is a Game Drive
Entim Mara Camp sits inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, directly on the Mara River at one of the major wildebeest crossing points. The Main Camp has 12 tents overlooking the river. The Private Wing, added in 2023, has 8 tents facing a different direction entirely — toward a wooded spring and the open Mara Plains.
“Entim” means “forest” in Maasai. The camp is tucked into dense woodland on a bend of the river. Full-board rates run USD 640-705/night in standard seasons, USD 1,095/night during peak migration (July-September). Park fees separate. Children under 8 not allowed. Minimum 2-night stay. The camp closes April 22 through May 31 each year.

The Layout Divide
Most booking sites gloss over this: the 12 Main Camp tents and the 8 Private Wing tents offer completely different experiences.
Main Camp vs. Private Wing: Key Layout Differences
Booking the right tent layout depends on whether you prefer frontline river drama or quiet savanna views. Use this comparison to decide between Entim’s Main Camp and the Private Wing:
Feature | Main Camp (12 Tents) | Private Wing (8 Tents) |
Primary View | Direct Mara River & crossing points | Wooded spring & open Mara Plains |
Atmosphere | Action-oriented with hippo sounds | Quiet, classic savanna privacy |
Special Setup | Request Tents 3 or 4 for elevated river views | Includes a dedicated 2-tent Family Suite |
Main Camp (River Tents): Directly overlook the Mara River and the crossing drama. You hear hippos grunting through the night. During migration, vehicles gather on the riverbank. The action is right there.
Private Wing (Plains View): These tents face a quiet, wooded spring and the open Mara Plains — not the river. If you want a silent, classic savanna view away from the hippo soundtrack and vehicle congestion, the Private Wing is structurally a different experience.
The Family Suite
The Private Wing has a specific configuration for groups: a Family Suite consisting of two luxury tents physically connected by a shared, private canvas central living room. Most booking sites don’t mention this exists.
Tent Selection in Main Camp
If you’re staying in Main Camp and want the crossing view, request Tent 3 or 4. They sit slightly elevated, giving you a better angle on the river without leaving your porch. During the 2025 migration, a guest in Tent 4 photographed a full crossing sequence from the veranda.
The trade-off: Main Camp tents are closely spaced. Limited privacy from the front. If this matters, mention it when booking.
The Reserve Advantage
Because Entim is stationed deep inside the reserve rather than on the boundaries, your guide doesn’t have to participate in the 6:00 PM gate race.
While hundreds of vehicles from camps outside the reserve queue at Sekenani or Talek gates to beat the strict 6:30 PM closure, I can sit with a single pride of lions until the absolute last drop of golden-hour light. Then we slide back into camp at dusk.
This changes how you experience afternoon drives. No rushing. No checking the clock at 5:15 PM.
The Calendar-Day Ticket Trap
Narok County uses a rigid digital booking system where park permits operate on a calendar day (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM) rather than a 24-hour cycle.
A common mistake: flying into Ol Kiombo Airstrip late in the afternoon. You’ll still be charged a full day’s park fee just for the 25-minute drive to camp before the ticket expires at 6:00 PM. If your flight arrives after 4:00 PM, factor this into your budget.
Treat the Transfer as a Game Drive
The 25-minute transit from Ol Kiombo Airstrip to camp cuts directly through the confluence of the Talek and Olare Orok rivers. This thicket matrix is dense leopard and lion territory.
Keep your camera out and fully assembled the second your feet hit the dirt runway. On multiple occasions, I’ve had clients spot their first Big Five animal before they even “arrive” at camp. The transfer is not dead time — it’s prime game viewing.
Sundowner Hill
The camp fire pit is great, but I always recommend requesting a late afternoon drive to Sundowner Hill. This elevated ridge sits a short drive from camp and offers a completely panoramic, 360-degree view of the sun setting over the Rift Valley Escarpment.
Drinks, snacks, and silence. It’s worth asking for specifically.
The Crossing Reality
The crossing point is directly in front of Main Camp. During migration season (July-October), you can often watch crossings from the dining tent or your veranda.
But I need to set realistic expectations: staying at Entim doesn’t guarantee a crossing from camp every day. In late August and early September 2025, some guests didn’t see crossings at camp and drove toward the Mara Triangle instead. Migration timing varies. The herds hesitate. Sometimes they cross at a different point entirely.
The advantage isn’t guaranteed daily crossings — it’s being first on scene when they do happen, and having the flexibility to watch without racing back to camp.
The iMac Photo Studio
The camp has a separate media tent with iMac computers for downloading and editing photos. Guides understand photography positioning — they know how to angle the vehicle for the best shots.
One limitation: because Entim is inside the reserve rather than a conservancy, off-roading is generally not permitted. This can affect ultra-close predator positioning compared with some conservancy camps. If off-road access matters for your photography, factor this into your choice.
Camp Infrastructure
Solar heat pumps: Many classic Mara camps rely on wood-fired “donkey” boilers for hot water — smoky air, unpredictable temperatures. Entim uses 24-hour solar heat pumps. Consistent pressure. No smoke.
Mid-day fans: Heavy canvas tents trap heat between noon and 3:00 PM. Many eco-camps cut electricity during these hours. Entim’s 24-hour solar grid runs standing fans in the tents. If you struggle with heat sleep, this helps.
WiFi: Starlink-based. Best reliability around the lounge and dining area. Some guests report stronger campwide connectivity, but don’t count on it in your tent.
The Food
The chef sources produce from his own garden — a sustainability detail most summaries miss. Desserts are exceptional. The eggs Benedict at breakfast is worth trying specifically.
Morning wake-up service includes coffee, cocoa, cream, and cookies delivered to your tent before drives. Bush breakfasts under acacias are well-executed and worth requesting.
If you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs. The hippo soundtrack at night is part of the experience, but it disrupts some guests.
The Staff
I’ve worked with many of these guides over the years:
Julius: Guide who takes guests on walks toward the riverbank to spot crocodiles and hippos up close.
Jeremiah, Joseph: Reliable trackers with strong local knowledge.
Ezra: Bar staff who remembers drink preferences.
Mary, Cynthia: Front-of-house staff who handle logistics smoothly.
Zablon: Service staff repeatedly praised by returning guests.
Erica: Massage therapist worth scheduling after long drives.
Chef Jimmy, Chef Aggrey: Kitchen team who handle dietary requests with care.
Molibanny Primary School
For community engagement away from commercialized Maasai cultural bomas, Entim coordinates outreach with Molibanny Primary School — about 30km away, educating local children ages 8-12.
If you coordinate with camp management before packing, they’ll facilitate a direct trip to drop off supplies and meet the teachers. This is the “Pack for a Purpose” connection that doesn’t show up in standard search results.
What Can Go Wrong
Tent spacing in Main Camp: Limited privacy from the front. Check carefully before changing clothes.
Manager interaction: The assistant manager handles most guest needs. The manager isn’t particularly visible.
Spa inconsistency: Some reports of water and service issues. Confirm availability before booking treatments.
No pool: If a pool matters, look elsewhere.
When to Visit
July-September: Peak migration. Crossings near Entim usually start in the first two weeks of August. USD 1,095/night plus USD 200/day park fees.
January-March: Standard rates (~USD 700/night), USD 100/day park fees. Dry. Excellent big cat viewing. Fewer vehicles.
November: Lower rates. Resident wildlife excellent. Like having the park to yourself.
April 22 – May 31: Camp is closed.
