Mara Serena Safari Lodge: The Honest 2026 Guide

Mara Serena Safari Lodge is one of the few properties actually inside the national reserve rather than along its border, sitting on a rocky hilltop in the Mara Triangle with the Mara River winding below. The architecture follows the curve of the hill in round, Maasai-inspired structures, and the view from the main balcony stretches across the plains toward Tanzania. Because the lodge is inside the reserve, there’s no gate to pass through and no morning transfer before the game drives begin. The safari starts from the car park.

The Rooms and Which Ones to Request

The rooms are arranged along the hillside like bungalows, connected by a winding path that slopes downhill from the main building. Every room has a balcony with a view, but what you see depends on which direction it faces. Rooms looking out over the river and the plains below are the most popular. Rooms on the opposite side face the hillside, which is pleasant but not what people come for.

Rooms from 55 onwards face a grazing area where elephants come to feed in the early morning. With binoculars from the balcony you can also pick out giraffes, hippos on the river, and sometimes a lion moving through the grass below. Ask for these rooms at booking, not at check-in when they’re already allocated.

Binoculars, hair dryers, and power adapters aren’t in the rooms by default but can be borrowed from reception. Ask on arrival.

The Hippo Pool Breakfast

This is the experience most guests talk about afterwards. A bush breakfast set up next to a hippo pool on the Mara River, where you eat while hippos surface and grunt a few metres away. The setting is simple: a folding table, camp chairs, good coffee, and the sound of the river. It books out quickly, so arrange it through the lodge on your first day rather than waiting.

The bush breakfast at the hippo pool is different from the regular dining room breakfast, and it’s worth skipping one buffet morning for. The walk down to the river with a guide is part of the experience.

The location is hard to beat. Being inside the reserve with no gate to pass through means more time on the road and less time in a queue. The hilltop position gives views that most camps and lodges in the Mara can’t match. The staff are warm and attentive, the food is solid with live cooking stations at the buffet where chefs make eggs, pancakes, and stir-fry to order, and the bush dinners with Maasai performances are worth doing once.

Where the lodge shows its age is inside the rooms. They’re smaller than what newer properties offer, and some of the mattresses have sagged over the years. The corners of older rooms don’t always get the attention they need. The lobby was recently modernised with a spa, a wellness centre, and a coffee area, but the rooms haven’t caught up yet. For guests who spend most of their time on drives and on the balcony, this matters less. For guests who want the room itself to feel like a luxury experience, it may fall short.

The food buffet repeats nightly, so on stays longer than two nights the variety thins out. Indian food options are always available, and the lime pie dessert is genuinely good.

What to Do Between Drives

The pool sits on the hilltop with views across the reserve. Between drives, this and the main balcony are where most guests spend their time. Guided nature walks around the property cost about $15 and cover plants, birds, and smaller wildlife like hyrax that live in the rocks around the lodge. The grounds are fenced with a discreet electric fence, so you can walk freely within the compound but not beyond without a guide.

Baboons patrol the balconies. They know when guests leave for meals and will enter rooms if the doors are open. Keep balcony doors closed when you’re not sitting out, and don’t leave food or anything shiny visible. Flying insects come in during the evenings, attracted by the warm lighting, especially during and after rains. Close windows before sunset.

WiFi is available but charged separately from the room rate. Two computer terminals and wireless access, both at extra cost. If staying connected matters, confirm the current fee at check-in.

The gift shop is well stocked compared to most Mara lodge shops. For a deeper experience, a Maasai village visit can be arranged through the lodge.

Is it good for the migration?

Yes. The lodge overlooks the Mara River, and some of the wildebeest crossings happen close enough to watch from the property during migration season. The Mara Triangle is one of the best positions for migration viewing because the herds cross the river in multiple directions depending on the grass.

Is it good for families?

Yes. The rooms are spacious enough for families, and children enjoy the pool, the balcony wildlife watching, and the hippo pool breakfast. The lodge has a more social, hotel-style atmosphere than a small tented camp, which suits families with younger children. The camps page lists other family options across the reserve.

How does it compare to tented camps?

Mara Serena is a permanent lodge, not a tented camp. The experience is more hotel than bush camp: solid walls, proper plumbing, a restaurant, a pool, a bar. Guests who want the bush-camp feel of canvas walls, night sounds, and an armed escort to dinner should look at the conservancy camps instead. Guests who want comfort, views, and an inside-the-reserve location without roughing it will find this a good fit.

How do I start planning?
