7 Days Kenya Safari Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha: The 2026 Guide

Tourists looking out from the pop-up roof of a safari vehicle in Kenya.
Experience an authentic African wildlife safari inside a custom private 4x4 Land Cruiser.

A 7 Days Kenya Safari Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha covers four parks in one week, connecting the Great Rift Valley with the plains of Kilimanjaro and the predator-rich Mara. For the 2026/2027 season, expect all-inclusive rates for two people sharing to range between KES 515,000 ($3,960) and KES 1,420,000 ($10,920) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, a TRA-licensed guide, all eCitizen park fees, and 6 nights of lodging. Success on this route depends on doing the Mara last to maintain wildlife momentum and using the Ngong-Suswa bypass to avoid Nairobi’s traffic traps.

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A 7 Days Kenya Safari Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Naivasha covers nearly 1,100 kilometres across four parks that look nothing alike. It’s the most ground you can cover in a week without flying. You cycle through gorges, track rhinos in a volcanic crater, watch lions hunt on open plains, and finish with old elephants against the backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain.

The 7-Day Itinerary

We do the lakes first to stretch your legs, hit the Mara for the big cats, and finish in Amboseli for the Kilimanjaro views. This sequence builds momentum and prevents safari fatigue.

Day 1: Nairobi to Naivasha

6:00 AM departure to beat the Rironi traffic. Hell’s Gate cycling (11 km to the gorge, plus a 1.5-hour gorge walk) and the Oserian Corridor. If you aren’t on your bike by 9 AM, you won’t have time for the gorge.

Day 2: Naivasha to Nakuru

Drive to Nakuru. Rhino tracking on the Naishi Plains. Nakuru is small enough to cover in 4 hours. Morning drive, Baboon Cliff, and the Makalia Falls loop. Night in Nakuru.

Day 3: Nakuru to Masai Mara

Exit via Lanet Gate to hit the Mau Narok shortcut. Arrival for a sunset drive in the Masai Mara.

Day 4–5: Heart of the Mara

Two full days tracking lions, cheetahs, and leopards. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. Make sure your Mara Triangle ticket is sorted if we need to cross the Purungat Bridge (see below).

Day 6: Mara to Amboseli

The long transit. Leave by 6:30 AM, clear Nairobi before midday, arrive Amboseli by mid-afternoon for a sunset Kilimanjaro view. Or fly via Masai Mara flying packages and save 5 hours.

Day 7: Sunrise Over Kilimanjaro and Return

Morning game drive at Enkongo Narok swamp with the elephants. Return to Nairobi by afternoon. Or take the SGR from Emali to Mombasa for a beach extension.

The Mara Triangle Ticket Rule

In 2026, the Masai Mara is split into the Reserve (east side) and the Triangle (west side). They require separate eCitizen tickets.

If you want to see a river crossing in the Reserve but you’re staying in the Triangle, you need a dual-validated QR code. If we cross the Purungat Bridge without the second park code pre-loaded, the digital system flags the vehicle for a trespass fee. I always check your Masai Mara booking for the word “Triangle” to make sure we’re covered.

Nakuru and Naivasha Shortcuts

Route Shortcut / Gem

David’s Insider Value & Hack

Lanet Gate Shortcut

Bypass City Traffic: Exit Nakuru via Lanet instead of the Main Gate to save 45 minutes of driving.

Oserian Wildlife Corridor

Solitude Tracking: Escape the crowds at Crescent Island to view leopards and rhinos in total silence.

Yellow-Billed Kites

May Migration: Scan the Elementaita skies to see thousands of kites following livestock plains.

Most 7-day circuits rush these parks. I don’t.

The Lanet Gate shortcut. See Day 3 in the itinerary. Exiting via Lanet instead of the Main Gate bypasses the city detours and saves 45 minutes.

Oserian Wildlife Corridor. While everyone crowds Crescent Island, I prefer the private Oserian Corridor. It connects Hell’s Gate to the lake. If you stay at Chui Lodge, you see leopards and rhinos in total silence.

The Yellow-Billed Kite Migration. In May, look up. You’ll see thousands of Yellow-billed Kites following livestock across the Elementaita plains. Most guides miss this because they’re only looking for lions.

Amboseli’s Tortoise Hatchery

Amboseli is about more than mountains.

The snorkel sight. At the Enkongo Narok swamp, look for elephants performing a full submerge. They walk through deep water using their trunks as snorkels.

Tortoise hatchery. If we pass the Amboseli Sopa Lodge, we stop at the Leopard Tortoise Hatchery. It’s a 15-minute micro-safari and a perfect sensory break from the Big Five intensity.

11 Things to Know Before You Go

Infographic showing rules for digital park audits, Mara exit timing, and Diani SGR connection.
A summary of essential rules and expert hacks for planning a smooth Kenya safari.

Operational Focus

2026 Rule / Expert Hack

Digital Park Audits

Power Bank Mandatory: Keep your phone charged to display eCitizen QR codes; rangers do strict on-the-spot audits.

10 AM Mara Exit Rule

Strict 12-Hour Validity: Exit the gate by 10:00 AM on Day 6 to avoid being billed for an extra full-day park fee.

Diani Beach Connection

Emali SGR Hack: Board the train at Emali station to head straight to the coast without backtracking to Nairobi.

  1. Mount Suswa Obsidian. We stop near the Suswa caves on the Rift Valley floor. You can find Obsidian (volcanic glass) on the ground. A much better souvenir than a plastic giraffe.
  2. Rift Valley Golf View. Head to the 18th green at 5:30 PM. Zebras graze on the fairways with the lake behind them.
  3. Diani Beach Extension. See Day 7 in the itinerary. The Emali SGR station connects you to the coast without backtracking to Nairobi.
  4. February Low Season. Shorter grass makes rhinos easier to spot, and the crowds are gone. It rained a bit at night but was bright and sunny for every game drive.
  5. Wheelchair Accessibility. This circuit is doable with limited mobility, but only if I know at booking. I’ll arrange ground-floor rooms and a vehicle with wide doors.
  6. The Bush Lunch Upgrade. Ask me for a white-tablecloth lunch in the Mara savannah on Day 5. About KES 5,000–8,000 extra per person. It feels like a completely different trip.
  7. Water Warning. Budget camps charge for water at dinner. Carry your reusable bottle and fill it from the vehicle supply.
  8. 10 AM Mara Exit. Under current rules, your Masai Mara park fee is valid for 12 hours. We exit by 10 AM on Day 6 to save you the second-day fee.
  9. Vegetarian Prep. Budget camps serve meat and beans. If you want paneer or dal, I need 48 hours’ notice.
  10. Guide’s Physical Guidebook. A good guide carries a wildlife ID book in the vehicle. It helps you identify distant animals and understand markings. If your guide doesn’t carry one, ask.
  11. The Maji Moto Village. Skip the gate-side Masai villages. See the failure story below for why, and where to go instead.

The Village That Felt Like a Transaction

I once took a group to a Masai village near the Mara gate because they insisted. Rehearsed dance. Dark hut for a five-minute talk. Then aggressive pressure to buy KES 10,000 plastic beads. It felt like a souvenir shop, not a cultural exchange.

The community-run village near Maji Moto is different. It’s off the main tourist track. There’s no rehearsed dance. You actually talk to the warriors about their daily life and the conservation challenges they’re dealing with right now. That’s the version I book for my guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for four parks?

It’s the minimum. You get one night at Naivasha, one at Nakuru, two in the Mara, and one in Amboseli. For a more relaxed pace, see the 8-day version which adds a third Mara night. Browse all options on our Masai Mara packages page.

What is the best month for the Great Migration?

July to October. January is best for Kilimanjaro views. February is the value sweet spot: low-season prices, fewer vehicles, shorter grass. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.

Is a 4×4 Land Cruiser mandatory?

Yes. Nakuru and Mara tracks flood regularly. A minivan can’t handle it. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.

Can I drop one park to get an extra Mara night?

Yes. Drop Naivasha and you get a third Mara night with better leopard odds. But you lose Hell’s Gate cycling, Crescent Island walking, and the only “active safari” day on the circuit. If big cats are your priority, add the Mara night. If variety matters more, keep Naivasha.

What should I pack?

Layers, power bank, binoculars (8×42), physical passport, closed-toe shoes for Hell’s Gate, reusable water bottle, and a Safaricom SIM from the airport. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.

Is this trip safe?

Yes. All four parks have rangers, your guide carries a radio, and the lodges are established. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.

Before You Book

This is the most ground you can cover in a week without flying. Four parks, four different landscapes, and by Day 5 you’ve seen more of Kenya than most people see in three visits. The driving is real. The dust is real. But the variety is the whole point. No two days look or feel the same.

If 7 days feels like too much, try a 5 days Masai Mara safari or a 4 days Masai Mara safari. Want a different circuit? See the 6 days Masai Mara Amboseli safari or the Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari. Browse everything on our Masai Mara packages page.
