10 Days Kenya Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide
A 10 Days Kenya Safari is the full Kenya experience, offering enough time to cover the arid north, the high-altitude volcanic forests, and the predator-heavy plains of the south. For the 2026/2027 season, expect all-inclusive rates for two people sharing to range from KES 585,000 ($4,500) to KES 1,820,000 ($14,000) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, a TRA-licensed guide, all eCitizen park fees, and 9 nights of lodging. The key to this trip is spending more nights in fewer parks: 4 nights in the north, 2 nights in the Rift Valley, 4 nights in the Mara. That gives you 7 full game drive days and only 3 transit days.
Region & Pacing | Strategic Allocation & Focus |
4 Nights: Arid North (Samburu & Ol Pejeta) | The Deep Dive: Track the unique “Special Five” and chimpanzees with zero crowd pressure. |
2 Nights: Rift Valley (Nakuru & Naivasha) | The Midpoint Break: Boat safaris and focused morning rhino tracking to ease road fatigue. |
4 Nights: Masai Mara (Southern Plains) | The Grand Finale: Six comprehensive game drives entirely optimized for large predators and crossings. |

I’ve been guiding for ten years. A 10 Days Kenya Safari covers nearly 1,300 kilometres across ecosystems that share almost nothing in common. The mistake most people make is trying to see everything. Three regions, not six parks. More time watching animals, less time watching the road.
How to Split 10 Days
Most 10-day plans try to visit 6 parks. You’ll be tired of packing before you see your first lion. The better approach is fewer parks with more nights at each. Four nights in the north. Two nights in the Rift Valley. Four nights in the Mara.
Day 1: Nairobi Arrival
Start slow. David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust at 11 AM for the elephant orphans. Giraffe Centre in the afternoon. Karen Blixen Museum if you have time. Dinner at The Talisman in Karen. Sleep in Nairobi. Don’t drive 5 hours on an overnight flight arrival.
Day 2–3: Samburu National Reserve
Arid species. The Special Five. Elephants submerging in the Ewaso Ng’iro with only their trunks above water. Leopards in the Doum Palms. Two full days gives you four game drives in a park with almost no other vehicles.
Day 4–5: Ol Pejeta Conservancy
The only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. Baraka the blind rhino who loves chin scratches. Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on earth. Night game drives for servals and aardvarks. If you add Solio Ranch nearby, you’ll see 40+ rhinos in a single field of vision.
Day 6: Nakuru and Naivasha
Morning rhino drive at Nakuru (Naishi Plains, 4 hours is enough). Afternoon boat ride at Naivasha or Crescent Island walk. Use Naivasha as a base. Nakuru is only an hour away. Sleep at Naivasha.
Day 7–9: Masai Mara
Four nights. Six game drives. Tracking lions, cheetahs, and leopards. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points.
Day 10: Nairobi National Park and Departure
Morning game drive at Nairobi National Park — the only capital city in the world with a national park inside it. Lions, rhinos, giraffes, and buffalo with the Nairobi skyline behind them. Afternoon flight home. Or take the SGR to Mombasa for a Diani Beach extension.
The Road Between Parks
A 10-day safari covers the most altitude of any Kenya trip. You go from Nairobi at 1,700m to the Aberdares at 2,300m and down to Samburu at 800m.
The Timau wind. The temperature swing is brutal. You can be at 8°C at The Ark and 35°C in Samburu within 24 hours. Keep your thermal jacket in the cabin on Day 3. Most people pack it away thinking Africa is hot, then freeze on the Timau escarpment.
Miraa Express. When driving north of Nanyuki, you share the road with Miraa trucks — pickups carrying Khat to the border. They drive at terrifying speeds because the leaves must be fresh. If you see one with hazard lights on, move to the shoulder. They own that road.
Ol Pejeta and the Rhino Capital
Wildlife Encounter | David’s Insider Tracking Hack |
Rescue Chimpanzees | Kitchen Tour: Request the $40 “Behind the Scenes” tour to see rescued chimps up close. |
Blind Black Rhino | The Baraka Contact: Head directly to his enclosure for an emotional hand-feeding opportunity. |
Northern White Rhinos | The Sanctuary Stop: View Najin and Fatu, the planet’s final two northern white rhinos, under constant guard. |
40+ Rhinos in One View | The Solio Ranch Detour: Add a morning run here to witness massive rhino numbers against yellow fever trees. |
The top Google results mention rhinos at Nakuru. A 10-day trip gives you time for the real rhino capital.
Baraka and the chimps. Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees — about 40 rescues from West African civil wars. Request the “Behind the Scenes” kitchen tour ($40). You can also hand-feed Baraka, a blind black rhino. It’s the emotional peak of the trip for most guests.
Solio Ranch. If we add a morning at Solio (between Ol Pejeta and Nakuru), you’ll see 40+ rhinos in one sweep. In May, the contrast of prehistoric rhinos against yellow fever trees is the most underrated photo opportunity in Kenya.
The Mara on Day 7
By Day 7, something happens that doesn’t happen on shorter trips. Another lion starts to feel routine. Your brain gets full.
The slow drive. Tell me you want a different kind of game drive on Day 8. We spend two hours looking only at dung beetles, birds, and tracks. Learning how to read tracks in the dust resets the way you see the bush. When you finally see a lion on Day 9, you’re watching it through different eyes because you understand what it walked through to get there.
The 10 AM rule. Your Masai Mara park fee is valid for 12 hours. We start our last dawn drive at 5:45 AM and exit by 10:00 AM to avoid the second-day charge.
Photo management. Don’t transfer 4,000 photos in the vehicle. The Mara dust is micro-fine and will damage your ports. Wait until you’re in a Starlink-enabled lodge at night. Bring a portable SSD.
12 Things to Know Before You Go
Bush Hazard / Focus | 2026 Rule & Operational Hack |
The Timau Escarpment | Thermal Jacket Rule: Temperatures drop to 8°C instantly. Keep cold-weather layers inside the vehicle cabin. |
Northern Miraa Trucks | The Hazard Yield: Cargo pickups fly at extreme speeds. Move completely to the shoulder if hazard lights flash. |
Mara Micro-Fine Dust | Photo Protection: Never transfer files inside the Cruiser; micro-dust ruins open ports. Wait for your lodge. |
12-Hour Ticket Window | 10:00 AM Mara Exit: Start your morning game drive at 5:45 AM to clear gates early and avoid duplicate fees. |
- The Aberdare Bell. If staying at The Ark, don’t turn off the room buzzer. Four rings means a rare Bongo or Giant Forest Hog is at the salt lick at 2 AM.
- 15 kg Flight Limit. Domestic flights (Safarilink/AirKenya) have a strict 15 kg soft-bag limit. If you’re flying one leg via Masai Mara flying packages, pack a nesting bag system.
- Stay 2-Night Minimum. Packing and unpacking kills the rhythm. One advisor counted a 10-day itinerary that gave only 3 full game drive days out of 10. The rest were transit days disguised as game drives.
- Early December Secret. See the FAQ below. Green landscapes, no crowds, and lower prices. The best-kept timing secret for this circuit.
- Nderit Gate Entry. We enter Nakuru from the south to drop directly into rhino territory. Bypasses the city exhaust and saves 45 minutes.
- Groups Over 6 Need Two Land Cruisers. Some operators put groups of 7+ into a Nissan 7-Seater minivan. On a 10-day trip, minivans are miserable. Insist on being split into two Land Cruisers.
- Peak Season Books 10 Months Out. If you’re planning for July–October, start the booking process in September or October of the previous year. Lodge availability is the bottleneck.
- GavaPay QR Audit. Rangers do digital audits inside the parks. Carry a power bank. If your phone dies and you can’t show your QR code, you get charged again.
- Guide with Photography Experience. On a 10-day trip, you spend more time with your guide than anyone else on the holiday. A guide who understands Golden Hour angles, light conditions, and patience at sightings transforms the trip. Ask by name if possible.
- “Stay 3, Pay 2” Mara Promotion. Some lodges offer this in shoulder season (June/November). With 4 Mara nights on a 10-day trip, you can save a full night’s cost.
- Kenya + Tanzania Cross-Border. See the FAQ below. With 10 days, crossing into the Serengeti is realistic.
- Nairobi Bookend Days. See Days 1 and 10 in the itinerary. Don’t rush past them — guests consistently rate these as highlights.
The Couple Who Wanted Seven Parks
A couple from London emailed me a spreadsheet. Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Aberdare, Nakuru, Naivasha, the Mara, Amboseli. Colour-coded by day. They’d spent weeks on it.
I told them it wouldn’t work. Too much driving. They said they’d already booked two of the lodges and didn’t want to lose the deposits. So we went with their plan.
By Nakuru on Day 5, the wife was sleeping through every game drive. Not because she was bored. Because her body was done. They’d been in the vehicle for 6 hours a day, checking in and out of a new lodge every night, and the roads between Aberdare and Nakuru had rattled her back. They skipped Amboseli entirely and spent the last two days at a Mara lodge with a pool.
She told me at the airport: “We should have listened to you.” I hear that sentence about twice a year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10 days too long for a Kenya safari?
No. It’s the length where the trip stops feeling like tourism and starts feeling like immersion. You get 7 full game drive days across three regions. Shorter trips give you 3–4 game drive days at best.
What is the best month?
July to October for the migration. Early December is the secret season: green landscapes, fewer crowds, lower prices. January is best for Samburu and Kilimanjaro views. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.
Is a 4×4 Land Cruiser mandatory?
Yes. Samburu, Nakuru, and the Mara all have tracks that flood regularly. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.
Can I add Tanzania?
Yes. Cross from the Mara into the Serengeti via Sand River. You need a Tanzania visa ($50) and a guide change at the border. It adds 2–3 days minimum.
Can I add a beach after?
Yes. From the Mara, fly to Mombasa via Masai Mara flying packages or drive to Emali for the SGR train to Diani Beach.
What should I pack?
Soft duffel bags (15 kg max if flying), layers for Samburu heat and Aberdare cold, power bank, binoculars (8×42), portable SSD for photos, DEET insect repellent, and a Safaricom SIM from the airport. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.
Is this trip safe?
Yes. All parks have rangers, your guide carries a radio, and the lodges are established. Main road risk is the Miraa trucks north of Nanyuki. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.
What 10 Days Actually Feels Like
The first three days, everything is new. You photograph every zebra. By Day 5, your eye has sharpened. You notice the difference between a relaxed lion and a hunting lion before your guide says a word. By Day 7, the big animals start feeling routine, and I reset you with a slow drive focused on tracks and birds. By Day 9, you’re reading the bush. You see the oxpecker fly up and know there’s a buffalo behind the thicket before it appears. That progression doesn’t happen on a 4-day trip. It barely happens on a 7-day trip. Ten days is where you stop being a tourist and start being a safari traveller.
If 10 days feels like too much, try a 5 days Masai Mara safari or a 4 days Masai Mara safari. Want fewer parks with more depth? See our Masai Mara Samburu Nakuru Safari. Browse everything on our Masai Mara packages page.
