7 Days Masai Mara Diani Beach Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide

A 7 Days Masai Mara Diani Beach safari is the version where neither half feels rushed. You get 6 game drives in the Mara, a balloon morning, and a walking safari with a Maasai warrior. At Diani, you have time for Wasini Island, a rest day, and whale shark spotting or a day trip to Mombasa without any of it feeling squeezed. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 485,500 ($3,735) to KES 1,320,000 ($10,150) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, all internal flights, and beach accommodation.

Three Nights in the Mara, Four at the Beach

With 3 nights in the Mara, you get 6 game drives. That’s enough to cover the main reserve and a conservancy like Naboisho or Olare Motorogi. Your third morning is when I suggest the hot air balloon or a walking safari with a Maasai warrior. The 5 and 6-day versions don’t have that morning free.

The beach side is where 7 days really pulls ahead. You can do Wasini Island on one day, have a genuine rest day, and still have two more days for whale shark tours, Fort Jesus, or water sports. After three days of 5:30 AM wake-ups in the Mara, your body needs a day where you sleep past 8 AM and don’t move from the lounger until lunch.

The 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara

Morning flight from Wilson Airport. Arrive for lunch and an afternoon game drive. I schedule your entry to align with the park fee clock so your permit covers all three nights.

Day 2: Full Day in the Mara

Morning and afternoon game drives. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. If you’re in a conservancy, this evening is when I suggest a night drive after dinner. Servals, aardvarks, bush babies, and hunting leopards that you won’t see in the main reserve.

Day 3: Walking Safari or Balloon

Your third morning. Either a hot air balloon at sunrise or a half-day walking safari led by a Maasai warrior through the conservancy. The walk is a completely different way to experience the Mara. You learn to read tracks, identify dung, and understand how the Maasai live alongside predators. Afternoon at camp.

Day 4: Mara to Diani

Morning game drive. Flight to Ukunda Airstrip. By 4 PM you’re on the sand. Sit on the left side of the plane for Kilimanjaro on the way.

Day 5: Wasini Island

Full-day dhow trip. Book with Pilli Pipa for the best boat and restaurant. Dolphin spotting, snorkelling at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, and a seafood lunch on the island. The drive to Shimoni takes about an hour each way. You’re back by 5 PM.

Day 6: Rest Day or Whale Sharks

This is the day that makes 7 days different from 5 or 6. You can do nothing. Sleep in. Sit by the pool. Get a spa treatment. Or, if you want more, book a whale shark tour with Coral Spirit (they use a microlight to spot from above) or take the Dongo Kundu Bypass to Mombasa for Fort Jesus and the Old Town. Most guests choose the rest day. After a week of activity, the ones who planned something often wish they hadn’t.

Day 7: Departure

Morning at the beach. Transfer to Ukunda Airport for the flight to Nairobi.

What You Can Do With 4 Beach Nights

Coastal Activity

Why 4 Beach Nights Makes It Work

Mombasa Old Town

Requires a 3-hour round trip via the bypass; only viable when you have multiple beach days open.

Whale Shark Safaris

Full-day microlight-assisted blue water excursions; fits easily without consuming your entire beach holiday.

Private Dhow Charters

Upgrades group transport into a private itinerary; allows setting your own pace for marine tracking.

Boutique Retreats

Syncs perfectly with intimate, low-density locations like Msambweni for elite, crowd-free privacy.

With 4 nights at Diani, you actually have time to spread things out. Your arrival afternoon and departure morning are half-days, but in between you have 3 full days where you can plan a proper activity or do nothing at all. You can leave a day empty and not feel like you’re wasting it.

Fort Jesus and Mombasa Old Town. See Day 6 in the itinerary. A UNESCO site about 1.5 hours from Diani via the bypass. The travel time only makes sense if you have 4 beach nights.

Whale shark tours. See Day 6 in the itinerary. The tours eat most of a day with 1.5 hours of driving each way, so they only fit on 4 beach nights.

Private dhow tours. Group Wasini boats can carry 26 people. On a 7-day trip where you’re paying for the experience, upgrade to a private dhow. Pilli Pipa and Coral Spirit both offer them. The cost is higher but the pace is yours.

Diani Beach Art Gallery and Akamba Handicrafts. Two cultural stops on or near the beach road. Local and East African art at the gallery, traditional wood carvings at Akamba Handicrafts Cooperative. Good for the afternoon of your rest day.

Msambweni Beach House. If the main Diani strip feels too resort-heavy, Msambweni is further south, quieter, and full board. Small property on a cliff with a private beach. No vendors, no crowds. Several operators use it for guests who want privacy over facilities.

Waterlovers Beach Resort. Only 6 rooms. The staff know your name by the first morning. They arrange diving, kitesurfing, and Wasini trips directly. On a 7-day trip with 4 beach nights, this size of property feels personal.

10 Things to Know Before You Go

  1. Night Drives Need Conservancies. Night drives aren’t allowed in the main Mara reserve. Stay at one of the conservancies mentioned in the split section above for spotlight drives after dinner. With 3 Mara nights, you can fit one without losing a morning.
  2. Sundowners With Warriors. Luxury conservancy camps offer guided sunset walks with Maasai warriors, ending with drinks at a viewpoint. Not a drive. Walking into the bush on foot as the light changes. Ask your camp about this when you book.
  3. Camp Closures in April and May. Some conservancy camps close from mid-April to end of May for the long rains. The Porini camps (Lion Camp, Rhino Camp) shut entirely. Check with your operator that your specific camp is open if your trip falls in this window.
  4. Siana Gate. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks for eCitizen validation. I use the Siana Gate for faster entry and a game drive on the way in.
  5. Screenshot Your QR Code. Signal at some Mara gates is unreliable. Screenshot your validated eCitizen QR code before you leave Nairobi. If your phone can’t load the page at the gate, you’ll wait.
  6. The Shimoni Drive. See Day 5 in the itinerary. The drive each way adds 2 hours to the Wasini day. Plan accordingly.
  7. Private Dhow Upgrade. See the Diani section above for why group boats with 26 people aren’t worth it on a 7-day trip.
  8. Dongo Kundu Bypass. The Likoni Ferry is for cargo now. The bypass cuts Mombasa-to-Diani from 3 hours to 45 minutes. If your driver mentions the ferry, ask for the bypass.
  9. Masai Mara booking KATO Check. Verify your operator on the KATO directory before paying any deposit.
  10. Ali Barbour’s Books Out 4 Days Ahead. If you want to eat at the famous cave restaurant in Diani, book it on Day 1 while you’re still in the Mara. By the time you arrive at the beach, it’s often full.

About the Camera Humidity Problem

I mention this at every pre-trip briefing for Mara-to-Diani trips and it still catches people out. The Mara is bone-dry, around 15% humidity. Diani is 85%. If you open your camera bag straight after landing, condensation forms inside the lens elements. It takes 12–24 hours to clear and there’s nothing you can do to speed it up.

Leave your camera bag closed in your room for 3 hours with the AC off. Let the temperature equalise slowly. It’s boring advice but it works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need?

Seven is where both halves feel complete. For a tighter schedule, see the 5-day or 6-day version. Browse all options on our Masai Mara packages page.

What is the best month?

August to October for the migration and calm seas. January for whale shark spotting and leopard sightings. May is green season with lower prices and fewer crowds, but rougher seas. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.

Is a 4×4 mandatory?

Yes. Mara tracks flood regularly. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.

What should I pack?

Two bags. A soft duffel for the Mara with layers, binoculars, power bank, and camera. A separate bag for Diani with swimwear, reef shoes, and sunscreen. Leave the beach bag at Wilson Airport or your Nairobi hotel. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.

Is this trip safe?

Yes. The Mara has rangers and your guide carries a radio. Diani has hotel security and a police presence on the beach road. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.

What 7 Days Feels Like

You get the balloon morning and the Wasini day and the rest day and still have time left over. You don’t leave the Mara wishing you’d had one more drive, and you don’t leave Diani wishing you’d had a day to do nothing. Most guests who’ve done all three versions say 7 is where the trip stops feeling like a schedule and starts feeling like a holiday.

If 7 days feels like too much beach, try the 5 days Masai Mara safari or 4 days Masai Mara safari. Want a different circuit? See the Masai Mara Amboseli Nakuru Safari or the 6 days Masai Mara Amboseli safari. Browse everything on our Masai Mara packages page.
