A 5 Days Masai Mara Diani Beach safari splits into 2 nights of predator action in the Mara and 2 nights on the Indian Ocean. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 285,500 ($2,195) to KES 1,150,000 ($8,845) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser in the Mara, the direct flight to Ukunda, and beach accommodation. Five days is tight. Fly direct instead of driving, store your beach bag at Wilson Airport, and time your Mara entry to align with your departure flight.

The 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara

6:30 AM departure. Stop at the Mt. Longonot Viewpoint on the Rift Valley escarpment for the only panoramic photo of the trip. Arrive for an evening game drive. I schedule your entry for after 1:00 PM so your 48-hour park permit aligns with the Day 3 flight.

Day 2: Full Day in the Mara

A full day tracking lions, cheetahs, and leopards. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. On a 2-night stay, you get 4 game drives total. Every one counts.

Day 3: Mara to Diani

Morning game drive. Exit by 10:00 AM to avoid the extra-day fee. The 1:30 PM flight takes you directly to Ukunda Airstrip. By 4 PM, you’re on the sand. Sit on the left side of the plane for an eye-level view of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers on the way.

Day 4: Diani Beach

You have one full beach day. Choose between a half-day at Shimba Hills (45 minutes away, rare sable antelope and Sheldrick Waterfall), a 3-hour glass-bottom boat trip to Robinson Island for snorkelling and dolphins, or simply the beach and pool. On 5 days, don’t try to do Wasini Island. It takes the whole day and you’ll feel rushed.

Day 5: Departure

Morning at the beach. Transfer to Ukunda Airport for the 45-minute flight to Nairobi. Or take the Dongo Kundu Bypass to Mombasa (45 minutes, skips the Likoni Ferry entirely) and catch the SGR train back.

The Flight and Luggage Problem

Luggage Metric

5-Day Bush & Beach Strategy

Weight Limit

Strict 15 kg maximum allowance on internal bush flights.

Bag Type

Must use a soft-sided duffel bag; hard cases are rejected.

Camera Factor

Gear eats up 5–7 kg; utilize lodge same-day laundry to pack less.

Beach Storage

Leave beach luggage in Nairobi; arrange delivery to Ukunda.

Transit Comfort

Rough murram roads require verifying high-quality 4×4 vehicles.

Bush planes have a strict 15 kg soft-bag limit. Your snorkelling gear, beach clothes, and dinner outfits won’t fit alongside your safari kit.

Pack two bags. A soft duffel for the Mara with your layers, binoculars, and camera. A separate bag for Diani with your swimwear, reef shoes, and sunscreen. Leave the beach bag at Wilson Airport lockers, your Nairobi hotel, or our office. We arrange for it to meet you when you land at Ukunda.

Camera gear eats the allowance. Your camera body, lenses, binoculars, and chargers can weigh 5–7 kg. That leaves 8–10 kg for clothes and toiletries. Safari lodges wash clothes same-day, so you need less than you think.

Back and joint issues. The transfer from your Mara camp to the airstrip is 30–60 minutes on corrugated murram. If you have back problems, tell me at booking. The vehicle quality for this leg varies between operators and it matters on a short trip where you can’t afford a sore back on Day 3.

What to Do at Diani on a Short Stay

You have one full day. Don’t try to do everything.

Shimba Hills. See Day 4 in the itinerary. The only inland safari you can do as a half-day from Diani.

Robinson Island. See Day 4 in the itinerary. A shorter alternative to Wasini that gets you back by 1 PM.

Kitesurfing. Diani has some of the best conditions in East Africa. December to March has the best wind. Equipment rental is available on the beach road.

Humpback whales. If your trip falls between August and October, boat tours from Diani can spot humpback whales migrating through the channel. You can see two of Africa’s great migrations in one 5-day trip: wildebeest in the Mara and humpback whales off Diani.

Chale Island. A tiny private island just off the coast with a single resort. Mangrove kayaking, snorkelling, and coastal forest walks without leaving the island. On a 5-day schedule where you only have 2 beach nights, staying on Chale means everything is walking distance.

10 Things to Know Before You Go

Travel Topic

Expert 5-Day Hack

Park Fee Clock

Enter Mara after 1 PM, exit by 10 AM to avoid an extra $100+ fee.

Mombasa Transit

Use Dongo Kundu Bypass; cuts transfer time down to 45 minutes.

Foot Safety

Pack reef shoes; coral is sharp and injuries ruin short beach stays.

Game Drive Time

Skip the Masai village visit to protect 25% of your total Mara time.

Local Sourcing

Buy coconuts from beach road bicycle vendors for KES 100.

Diani Transport

Only hire boda boda drivers wearing numbered, high-visibility vests.

  1. Reef Shoes. Diani’s sand is soft but the coral sections are sharp. Several guests have cut their feet walking to the water without reef shoes. On a 5-day trip, you can’t afford to spend a beach day nursing a foot injury.
  2. The Masai Village Decision. The village visit is usually offered on Day 3 morning, replacing your final game drive. That’s 25% of your total Mara game time. Decide in advance: cultural encounter or one more drive.
  3. Dongo Kundu Bypass. Ignore old blogs about the Likoni Ferry. The bypass is now open and cuts the Mombasa-to-Diani transfer from 3 hours to 45 minutes. If your driver mentions the ferry, ask for the bypass.
  4. Shared vs Private Drives. On a budget 5-day package, your Mara game drives are shared with other guests. Two drives per day on a fixed schedule. If you want to linger at sightings, upgrade to a private vehicle for about $100–$150/day.
  5. Boda Boda Vest Code. In Diani, only use motorbike taxis where the driver wears a numbered, high-visibility vest. They’re vetted by the tourism police.
  6. Humpback + Wildebeest. See the Diani section above. August to October is the only window for both migrations on one trip.
  7. Park Fee Timing. See Days 1 and 3 in the itinerary. The 1:00 PM entry and 10:00 AM exit work together to avoid an extra $100–$200 charge.
  8. Don’t Do Wasini on 5 Days. See Day 4 in the itinerary. Save Wasini for the 7-day trip.
  9. Ivory Burn Pits. If we start with a Nairobi NP drive on Day 1, we stop at the ivory burn pits near the entrance. Five minutes. One reviewer called it the most powerful moment of the trip.
  10. KES 100 Coconuts. Don’t pay resort prices for coconuts. Buy from the bicycle vendors on the beach road.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need?

Five is the minimum for Mara + Diani. You get 2 nights at each. For a more relaxed pace with 3 Mara nights and 4 beach nights, see the 7-day version or browse all options on our Masai Mara packages page.

What is the best month?

August to October for the migration and calm seas. January for leopard sightings and warm water. Check our best time to visit Masai Mara guide.

Is a 4×4 mandatory for the Mara?

Yes. Mara tracks flood regularly. Every private safari we run uses a 4×4.

Can I see the Big Five in 2 nights?

It’s possible. Two nights gives you 4 game drives. With an experienced guide and a conservancy stay, your odds are strong for lions, elephants, buffalo, and leopards. Rhinos are the hardest — ask your guide to focus the first morning drive on known rhino territory.

What should I pack?

Two bags. A soft duffel for the Mara with layers, binoculars, power bank, and camera. A separate bag for Diani with swimwear, reef shoes, and sunscreen. Leave the beach bag in Nairobi. See the luggage section above for the weight limit. Full list in our Masai Mara packing list.

Is this trip safe?

Yes. The Mara has rangers and your guide carries a radio. Diani has hotel security and a police presence on the beach road. More in our Masai Mara safety guide.

What 5 Days Actually Gets You

Five days is tight. You won’t have a rest morning in the Mara. You won’t have a lazy full day at the beach. But you’ll have 4 game drives, a flight over the Rift Valley, and 2 nights on one of the best beaches in Africa. For most people on a first visit to Kenya, that’s enough to know whether they want to come back for longer. And most of them do.

If 5 days feels too rushed, try the 7-day Masai Mara and Diani Beach Safari. Want a safari-only trip? See our 5 days Masai Mara safari or 4 days Masai Mara safari. Want a different circuit?
