7 Days Masai Mara Zanzibar Safari: The Honest 2026 Guide

A 7 Days Masai Mara Zanzibar Safari splits into 3 Mara nights and 3 Zanzibar nights, with one transit day through Nairobi. Compared to the 8-day version, you lose one Zanzibar night. That means Stone Town and Mnemba Atoll, but not Safari Blue and a rest day on the same trip. For the 2026/2027 season, all-inclusive rates for two people sharing range from KES 615,500 ($4,735) to KES 2,450,000 ($18,850) per person. This covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, all flights, the mandatory $44 Zanzibar insurance, and island accommodation.

The 7-Day Itinerary

Three Mara nights, three Zanzibar nights, one transit day.

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara

Morning flight from Wilson Airport. Arrive for lunch and an afternoon game drive. I time your first entry so the permit doesn’t expire before your last morning game drive.

Day 2: Full Day in the Mara

Morning and afternoon game drives. If the migration is happening (July–October), we position near the Mara River crossing points. If you’re in a conservancy, this evening is good for a night drive.

Day 3: Balloon Morning or Walking Safari

Hot air balloon at sunrise or a walking safari with a Maasai warrior. Afternoon at camp.

Day 4: Mara to Zanzibar

Morning game drive. Fly to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, swap your safari duffel for your Zanzibar bag at the terminal lockers, transfer to JKIA, and catch the afternoon flight to Zanzibar. Have your yellow fever card and ZIC insurance QR code in your hand for immigration. You arrive in the evening.

Day 5: Stone Town

Full day. See the section below for what to fit in. This is your one Stone Town day, so it needs to count.

Day 6: Beach or Mnemba Atoll

Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll from the northeast coast, or a full rest day at the beach. If you went with Nungwi, the sunset alone is worth the trip. If you want culture instead of the beach, this is when you’d do the Safari Blue dhow excursion through Menai Bay — but then you lose your rest day.

Day 7: Departure

Morning at the beach or a spice tour through the plantations. Flight to Nairobi or Dar es Salaam for your connection.

Best For…

Mnemba Atoll

Marine & Snorkeling

Clear waters, coral reefs, green turtles, and tropical fish.

Safari Blue

Cultural Dhow Cruise

Menai Bay sailing, sandbanks, mangrove lagoons, seafood.

Beach Rest Day

Pure Relaxation

Unwinding at Nungwi/Kendwa after early-morning safari drives.

You arrive on the evening of Day 4 and leave on the morning of Day 7. That’s 2 full days in between, plus two partial days on either side.

Stone Town takes your first full day. That’s not negotiable — it’s the reason you came to Zanzibar instead of Diani. After that, you have one full day and one morning left. Most guests use the full day for either Mnemba Atoll snorkelling or Safari Blue. Both are full-day commitments, so you can only do one. See Day 6 in the itinerary for details.

If you’d rather recover after 3 days in the Mara, spend Day 6 at the beach doing nothing and save the spice tour for your final morning. After a week of 5:30 AM alarms and game drives, a day with no plan is sometimes exactly what you need.

The 8-day version gives you that extra day so you don’t have to choose. On 7 days, you do.

Your One Day in Stone Town

Start early at Darajani Market, ideally between 7 and 9 AM. This is the working food market where Zanzibar feeds itself. Fish, spices, fruit, and meat. Buy your spices here instead of the tourist shops. From there, walk 5 minutes to the Old Slave Market at the Anglican Cathedral. The underground chambers where slaves were held are the most powerful stop in Stone Town. Budget 45 minutes.

Have lunch at Lukmaan Restaurant, a 5-minute walk from the market. Local Zanzibari curries and rice at budget prices. Then spend the early afternoon walking the Old Town alleys. The carved doors on every street tell you who lived there — floral carvings mean Arab influence, brass studs mean Indian. Stop at Freddie Mercury’s birthplace on Kenyatta Road for 20 minutes and pass by the Old Fort, which is free to enter and takes 15 minutes.

When the afternoon heat drops, find Jaws Corner, a small square where local men gather to sip kahawa tungu and play bao. There’s no menu. Someone brings you coffee and you watch the game. From there, walk to the Africa House Hotel Sunset Bar on the waterfront. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for a good seat.

After dark, head to Forodhani Gardens for the night market. Zanzibar pizza, grilled lobster, urojo soup, mishkaki, and sugarcane juice. Pick the stalls with the longest queues. If you want to splurge, replace the Africa House sunset with a rooftop dinner at Emerson Spice Hotel or Emerson on Hurumzi. Reserve in advance.

Mandatory Cover

$44 ZIC Insurance Policy (Must print out the QR code)

Health Entry

Physical Yellow Fever Card (Digital copies are rejected)

Cash Rules

Crisp, unmarred USD notes printed after 2013 only

Local Culture

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees in towns

Baggage Limit

Strict 15 kg soft duffel limit for Mara bush planes

  1. Print Everything. Your Kenya eTA, Tanzania eVisa, yellow fever card, ZIC insurance QR code, and hotel confirmations. Zanzibar airport Wi-Fi fails regularly. Paper saves you.
  2. Stonefish at Jambiani. Never walk barefoot on the east coast reef. Stonefish are perfectly camouflaged and their sting is extremely painful. Wear stiff-soled reef shoes.
  3. Red Colobus Eat Charcoal. In Jozani Forest, watch for the monkeys eating charcoal from burned trees. They do it to neutralise toxins from the leaves in their diet. Ask your guide to point it out.
  4. USD Notes After 2013. Zanzibar businesses refuse old, damaged, or pre-2013 USD notes. Bring crisp, clean notes in small denominations.
  5. Haggling Starts at 60%. In Stone Town curio shops, start at 60% of the first price. Keep it friendly. For spices, see the Stone Town section above.
  6. Language Shift. In the Mara, the Maasai are direct. In Zanzibar, the culture is polite and indirect. Learn “Samahani,” which means excuse me, and “Shikamoo,” a respectful greeting for elders.
  7. Dress Modestly in Stone Town. Cover shoulders and knees. Zanzibar is more conservative than Kenya’s coast.
  8. Siana Gate. Sekenani and Talek are bottlenecks for eCitizen validation. I use the Siana Gate for faster entry.
  9. Camera Humidity. You land in Zanzibar at 85–90% humidity from the dry Mara. Don’t open your camera bag for 3 hours.
  10. Masai Mara booking Operator Check. Verify your Kenya operator on the KATO directory and your Zanzibar operator on the TATO directory before paying any deposit.

Packing for Two Countries

Bush planes to the Mara have a strict 15 kg soft-bag limit. Pack a soft duffel for the Mara with your layers, binoculars, and camera. Pack a separate bag for Zanzibar. Leave the Zanzibar bag at Wilson Airport lockers, your Nairobi hotel, or our office. See Day 4 in the itinerary for how the swap works.
