Escape the Crowds: A Private Safari Haven at Mara Expedition Camp

Tucked away in the exclusive Olare Motorogi Conservancy, just beyond the northern edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, Mara Plains Camp offers a front-row seat to Kenya’s most spectacular wildlife encounters. This private conservancy is a predator’s paradise, boasting one of the region’s highest concentrations of big cats. With only five camps allowed within its vast expanse, guests can enjoy the thrill of safari without the hustle of crowded game drives. Hidden along the lush banks of the Ntiakitiak River, the camp seamlessly blends refined luxury with the raw beauty of the wilderness, ensuring an immersive and intimate retreat.

A stay in one of the Masai Mara conservancies extends beyond an extraordinary safari- it directly benefits the local Maasai people, the surrounding environment, and the wildlife that call this land home. With limited visitor numbers, every guest contributes to conservation programs, supports local Maasai employment, and aids community initiatives. Choosing Mara Plains Camp means playing an active role in preserving this delicate ecosystem, safeguarding the national park’s roaming wildlife, and uplifting the Maasai people, who have coexisted with these landscapes for centuries. As part of the Great Plains Conservation initiative, the camp helps protect endangered species, funds educational programs for local children, and empowers Maasai women by showcasing their handcrafted goods in its boutique. Conservation efforts go even further, with tree-planting initiatives restoring native species to the Mara, reinforcing the camp’s commitment to ecological restoration.

As you arrive at the camp, safari tents emerge through the dense riverine forest, each carefully positioned along the Ntiakitiak River. A wooden bridge leads you across the water, opening up to sweeping views of golden plains dotted with acacia trees. Mara Plains Camp’s architecture and décor pay homage to the rich cultural influences of East Africa-Lamu-style wooden doors, deep red accents that honor Maasai heritage, and elegant brass, leather, and copper finishes reminiscent of classic safari expeditions. Here, every detail reflects the romance of the wild, from intimate candlelit dinners under the stars to handcrafted cocktails savored as the sun dips below the horizon. With just seven safari tents, including the ultra-exclusive Jahazi Suite, the camp accommodates a maximum of fourteen guests, ensuring a highly personalized experience.

Each of the seven canvas suites is elevated on wooden platforms, featuring marquis ceilings that invite natural light while maintaining a seamless connection to the environment. Designed to blend into the landscape, the tents offer uninterrupted views of the savanna and come equipped with a plush king-sized bed or twin beds, a cozy seating area, an extensive private verandah and rough hewn wood floors. Thoughtful touches include oversized copper soaking tubs, walk-in rain showers, thick Lamu wood doors, and writing desks for documenting your safari adventures. Guests are treated to complimentary access to Swarovski HD binoculars and a professional Canon camera kit, ensuring every wildlife encounter is captured in stunning detail. Families with children over six years old are welcome, with a specially designed suite featuring two bedrooms, a shared lounge, and a private verandah overlooking the vast plains. One of just three exclusive camps in the region, Mara Plains Camp delivers an unrivaled fusion of wilderness, comfort, and conservation, ensuring an unforgettable escape into the heart of Africa.

Tripadvisor comments Mara Plains Camp

"The wild life encounters were beyond our greatest expectations - truly life changing for us. But equally enriching for us were the interactions with the staff at the camp. Such open, friendly, sincere people who welcomed us unconditionally into their community. We cried when we left at the outpouring of love we felt from the group seeing us off. As they say "until we meet again," never goodbye."
"Absolutely loved this place! Shoutout to Catherine, Cate, Malingi, Rolex, Weldon, David, and everyone else whose name I forgot! The rooms are beautiful. The wildlife viewing was second to none (baby hyenas, hyena kills, jackal kills, cheetah, lions... the list goes on). The food was incredible (seriously, they could have their own eating safari). The staff is so incredibly kind and thoughtful. The Maasai are SO cool. The only complaint I have is that it's about 20 hours of flying time away from me 🙁 Highly recommend!"
