Abundant water sources—natural springs, meandering streams, and perennial rivers—sustain a rich ecosystem, drawing countless animals to this protected haven. As the sun sets, enjoy sundowners against golden skies, embark on exhilarating game drives, and explore the wilderness on foot with expert guides, immersing yourself in the untamed beauty of this conservation success story.
Origins of Ol Kinyei Conservancy
Ol Kinyei Conservancy stands as the first-ever conservancy established within the expansive Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. This visionary project emerged through a collaboration between 171 Maasai landowners and a safari operator, setting aside land where wildlife thrives without human-made enclosures. To aid in ecological restoration, Maasai livestock are no longer permitted within the conservancy, allowing the land to recover from overgrazing. As a result, the area now teems with wildlife, including lions, leopards, buffaloes, and gazelles. Lucky visitors might even catch a rare glimpse of the elusive wild dog. At the heart of this conservation model is the local Maasai community, playing a vital role in preserving the land as a haven for both wildlife and responsible tourism.
Wildebeest Migration in Ol Kinyei
One of Ol Kinyei’s most spectacular annual events is the great wildebeest migration. From June to October, immense herds of zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests traverse the conservancy. Meanwhile, January brings the lesser-known Loita Hills Migration, where between 100,000 and 250,000 animals pass through Ol Kinyei before continuing toward Naboisho Conservancy and Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Eventually, they return to the Loita Plains, though the exact timing and scale of this migration shift from year to year.
