Tsavo East National Park is a vast expanse of savannah, bush and arid landscape located in southeastern Kenya. The park covers an area of approximately 11,747 square kilometers making it one of the largest protected areas in the country. It was established in 1948 as a game reserve and became a national park in April of 1949. Tsavo National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Kenya and a diverse array of wildlife can be found in the park including lions, elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, hyenas and leopards.

Attractions in Tsavo East.

There are many attractions to see in Tsavo East National Park, which is located in southeastern Kenya. Some of the highlights include:

Wildlife viewing.

Tsavo East is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and many species of birds.

Tsavo River: 

The Tsavo River runs through the park and is home to many hippos and crocodiles. The river also provides a great opportunity for bird watching. The river is one of the water sources in the park.

This 1.6 km inselberg is a great spot for spotting wildlife and for admiring the rolling hills of Tsavo East.

River Galana:

The Galana River is a great spot for fishing and bird watching. The river is also home to many crocodiles and hippos.

The Yatta Plateau.

The Yatta Plateau is the world’s longest lava flow, stretching for over 300 kilometers. It’s a great spot for hiking and picnicking due to the fact that it’s mostly flat.

Lugard Falls of Tsavo National Park.

These beautiful falls are located on the Galana River and are a popular spot for picnics and swimming.

The Aruba Dam.

This dam was built in 1952 and is a popular spot for birdwatching. You can also go fishing here, it is one of the main water sources for wildlife in this part of the park.

The Voi Elephant Orphanage.

This is a sanctuary for orphaned elephants, where they are cared for until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.

Kanderi swamp of Tsavo National Park:

This is a shallow marshland that is home to many species of birds and animals. It’s also a great spot for birdwatching in the national park and resting at the swamp.

Chyulu Hills:

The Chyulu Hills are a great spot for hiking, horseback riding and game viewing. The hills offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. You also get a bird’s eye view of the park while on the hills.

Tsavo West National Park is one of the largest national parks in Kenya. Covering an area of about 9,065 km2 (3,500 square miles). The park is also home to over 500 species of birds which makes it a great destination for birdwatchers. In addition to the wildlife, Tsavo West National Park is blessed with stunning landscapes that range from rolling plains and savannahs to lush forests, rivers and waterholes.

Tsavo West National Park is home to the unique Shetani lava flow. This is a result of volcanic eruptions long ago and has left behind a jagged landscape of hardened lava that is dotted with volcanic cones. Mzima springs is a series of natural freshwater pools formed by underground streams. The water in these pools comes from Mount Kilimanjaro, which is about 96 kilometres (60 miles) away. The springs are a great spot for swimming and there are many hippos and crocodiles that can be spotted here. They are also the home of many species of fish and aquatic life, making Mzima Springs a popular destination for divers and snorkelers. You can also take a boat ride or do some birdwatching in this area.

 

Tsavo West National Park is the perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers alike. With over 3,000 square kilometers of pristine wilderness, this large park has a variety of habitats, from open savannah grasslands to dense rainforest and swamps. How to Get to Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Park of Kenya.

Tsavo National Park is easily accessible due to the many options at hand such as the train which goes through the park.

By road

Tsavo National Park is easily accessible by road from Nairobi, Mombasa and other major cities. The park’s main entrances are the Chyulu Gate (for Tsavo West) and the Manyani Gate (for Tsavo East). Both gates are located along the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa. The journey time from either city to the respective gate is approximately 4-5 hours.

Other entry points are Voi Gate, Sala Gate, Ziwani Gate and Mtito Andei route.

 

By Flight

There are also several airstrips within Tsavo National Park that offer charter flights to visitors who would like to fly in. Air Kenya operates regular flights between Wilson Airport in Nairobi and various airstrips within Tsavo West – including Kilaguni, Ngulia and Kasigau.

By Train.

Visitors to Tsavo National Park can also opt to arrive by train from Nairobi. The Kenya Railway has regular services from Nairobi and Mombasa which stop at the Taveta station, located just outside of Tsavo West. From there, visitors can take a taxi or bus into the park.

When To Visit Tsavo National Park in Kenya.

Tsavo National Park can be visited throughout the year, but there are certain times when it is best to visit.

The dry season (July-October) is considered the best time to visit Tsavo West National Park, as the vegetation is less dense and wildlife viewing is at its peak.

The wet season (April-May) is also a good time to visit, although game viewing can be more challenging due to thicker vegetation.

In terms of temperatures, Tsavo generally has hot days and cooler nights throughout the year. Temperatures average at around 25°C during the day and dip down to around 15°C at night.
