Best time to visit Kenya depends on what type of activity you’d like to do:
The ultimate time to see animals in their natural habitats is from January through March or June through October. During these times, animals congregate around waterholes making it easier to spot them. Plus, since the vegetation is scarce during these months, you’ll get better visibility throughout the game drives.
The ultimate time to visit Kenya for its beautiful beaches and coastline runs from November through February when temperatures are warmer, rain is minimal, and ocean life is more active.
On the other hand, if you’re more interested in local culture, visiting during one of Kenya’s many festivals might be the best option. With unique celebrations like the Lamu Cultural Festival or Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration taking place year-round, visitors can explore Kenyan culture while enjoying some of nature’s greatest spectacles.
Weather in Kenya is generally warm and sunny all year round, with temperatures averaging about 25°C (77°F). However, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning your visit.
There are two rainy seasons typically taking place from April to June and October to December. During these times, areas of the country can be quite wet and even have floods during heavy rains.
During the dry season from July through September, temperatures tend to be higher and more humid. This is also the peak tourist season so plan ahead for accommodation availability.
January
January marks the end of the short rains and is one of the best months to go on safari. Temperatures are warm but not too hot and animals congregate around waterholes making it easier to spot them.
February
This is a great month for beachgoers with temperatures staying relatively stable throughout. Whale sharks can be seen in the Indian Ocean of Watamu during this month, so don’t forget your snorkeling gear!
March
March is an ideal time for game viewing as wildlife displays its beauty in abundance at this time of year. The wildebeest migration starts to move north from Tanzania’s Serengeti towards Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, so don’t miss out on this spectacular event!
April
April marks the beginning of the long rains and temperatures start to drop slightly. Many lodges are closed during this time as roads become impassable due to muddy conditions. This is an ideal month for bird watching as migratory birds arrive in their thousands.
May
The long rains continue into May, but with fewer days of downpours. Despite being in the middle of the wet season, it’s still possible to enjoy a great safari experience if you pick your destinations carefully. The Maasai Mara is particularly stunning at this time, so be sure to add it to your itinerary!
June
June marks the end of the long rains and temperatures start to rise again. With plenty of sunshine, this is a good time for bird watching and exploring some of Kenya’s lesser-known national parks.
July-October
These months make up the dry seasons in Kenya and are generally considered the best times to visit. Temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities; roads are passable, and wildlife is abundant. Game drives, beach holidays and cultural festivals can all be enjoyed during this period.
In November and December
November brings cooler temperatures with an increase in rain along the coast. This is a great time for beachgoers looking to escape the crowds and experience some fantastic marine life off Watamu or Lamu. December is a great month for safaris, with cooler temperatures and fewer visitors than in peak season.
Kenya is a great destination all year round, with something to offer in each season, be it from December to March or July and August the weather and climate can vary greatly depending on the location, but generally speaking, the rainy season typically runs from April to June, while the short rains start in late October and last through December.
The “long” dry season is July to September, while the best time for game viewing is usually between January and March. Throughout the year, temperatures tend to be warmer in coastal areas than inland.
From July to October, temperatures are cool and comfortable with milder nights. November and December bring cooler weather but also bring higher humidity levels along the coast.
From January through March, temperatures become more moderate inland and can get quite cold at night.
April and may mark the start of the long rainy season with heavy downpours that can cause flooding in some low-lying areas. Though the rains can make it difficult to get around, this is a great time for bird watching and spotting other wildlife. June marks the end of the long rains and temperatures start to rise again. Wildlife sightings become easier to spot as animals are drawn closer to water sources, making this a great time to observe the Big 5 in their natural habitats.
The short rains arrive after June to October and make it possible to experience the wildebeest migration as they head north towards Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. This is an incredible event that must not be missed this period of the year.
Staying warm on a safari to the Masai Mara is essential, so it’s best to layer clothes and pack a hat, scarf and warm jacket. If you’re planning on visiting in the rainy season, waterproof clothing is recommended as well.
Climate from March to May can vary significantly depending on the location. Inland areas are likely to be hot during this time, while on the coast regions, near the Indian Ocean, may experience heavy downpours. Pack accordingly – bring light layers and a rain jacket if you’re planning on visiting during these months.
If you plan on going on safari to the Masai Mara in Kenya during the dry season (January and February), temperatures can become very hot, so pack plenty of lightweight clothing that can help keep you cool. A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen are also essential for keeping sunburn at bay!
June to October
These months mark the dry season in Kenya, with temperatures becoming more pleasant as the months progress. This is a great time for game drives and safaris, as animals are much easier to spot during this period. Don’t forget your binoculars!
In November and December
Temperatures start to cool off from November as the short rains arrive. This is an excellent time for water-based activities, such as snorkeling at Watamu or Lamu. December is a great month for safaris, with cooler temperatures and fewer visitors than in peak season.
Overall, there is no wrong time to visit Kenya as the country offers something for
Whatever time of year you decide to visit Kenya, don’t forget your mosquito repellent: malaria is a risk throughout most of the country and should be taken seriously.
The equator splits Kenya in half, which has an impact on the country’s weather patterns. The northern half receives more rainfall than the south due to its proximity to the equator. This means that the southern areas tend to be drier and hotter than their northern counterparts.
In addition, because of its location near the equator, Kenya experiences less of an extreme temperature range between summer and winter than countries located further away from it. This can make packing for a trip to Kenya simpler since temperatures tend to be more consistent throughout the year. On the equator of Kenya there is a park known as the Ol Pejeta. The park is known to be dry and warm from January and February and from July to August the park is cool and the best time to travel.
Kenya’s weather patterns are affected by other factors as well, such as elevation and proximity to bodies of water. Elevation can have a significant impact on temperature, with areas at higher altitudes being cooler than those at lower altitudes. Proximity to the Indian Ocean, may also affect temperatures and humidity levels, as coastal regions tend to be much cooler and more humid than inland areas.
Overall, the equator has a major impact on the weather patterns in Kenya. Its close proximity to the equator means that temperatures are more consistent throughout the year and that northern regions tend to receive more rainfall than their southern counterparts.
